(NPR & CNN)“Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest,” protesters at Columbia and universities across the country have chanted.

Put most simply, divestment is the opposite of investment.

Many universities have an endowment, which is donated funds generally invested in stocks, bonds and other financial instruments to help the university earn money.

Columbia University protesters have a broad list of divestment targets, demanding the Ivy League college disclose and unload investments with ties to Israel, including Google, Microsoft Amazon and Airbnb.


Any ties these global companies have to Israel seems tenuous. I suspect that their ties to Israel are about as strong as their ties to Denmark or any other random country you can name. The protestors' logic seems to be that divesting will somehow place pressure on these companies which will place pressure on the Israeli people to place pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu. Good luck with that.

The protestors are also unhappy with Joe Biden and his "handling" on the Israel-Hamas war. It's not America's war. Biden can exert influence on Netanyahu but that's about it. It's overstatement to say Biden is responsible for the conduct of the war in Gaza. Biden has made no secret of his displeasure with Netanyahu's approach.

Maybe Biden could have vetoed the Ukraine/Israel/southeast Asia military & border package that Congress finally passed a couple of weeks ago, but that punishes Ukraine, Taiwan and our southern border requirements. Not to mention, last month Iran launched an attack of 170 drones and 30 cruise missiles and at least 110 ballistic missiles, nearly all of which Israel thwarted thanks in part to US-made defensive technology.

The crux of the matter is that Hamas is still holding one hundred or so mostly Israeli hostages after Hamas' unspeakable assault that killed over 1000 Israeli and international civilians. Very few countries would shrug their shoulders and let that slide without retaliation.

Since they like an indirect approach, if the protestors want to end the military assault on Gaza, they should pressure Hamas to return the hostages. Maybe they can do that by placing pressure on the citizens of Gaza to pressure Hamas.

    Which poll was it? CNN? that had the "dithering and diminished" Doddering Old Fool's approval on Israel, Hamas, Palestine under water by 11-89?

    Clouseau is between a rock and a hard place, no doubt, but he's providing no leadership at all,... demonstrating frailty, weakness and brainlessness.

    This is precisely why pb argued that electing a demented old fool would be an invitation to disaster.

    Do you think that from the perspective of the campus protestors that Trump is a better option? Trump's public position in regards to Gaza is that Israel should "get it over with." That sounds rather ominous if you are a Palestinian. It reminds me of Trump's claim that he could end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. If both cases Trump would "solve" the problem by letting one side annihilate the other.

    Anyway, given the Netanyahu/Trump bromance, I don't think the campus protestors would be happy with another Trump presidency.

    I think that the issue at hand is law enforcement here, not foreign policy over there.

    The "dithering and diminished" Doddering Old Fool's string-pullers are the precise definition of mamby pamby.

    I think Trump is despicable but, yes. Trump is a waaaaaaaaaay better option.

    Yes, I know you personally believe Trump is a better option. But from the protestors' perspective and their self-proclaimed demands, Trump is the far worse option. I don't think they've thought that one through.

    From the perspective of innocent people who are facing vile and violent antisemitic bigotry, Trump is the better option.

    Law enforcement in regards to campus protests is a local issue, not a presidential issue.

    I'm not so certain. And, I don't know what's being reported by the Holy Trinity and the metaphorical Rachel, but, apparently, there's substantial reason to believe that many of the protesters are professional rabble rousers who travel from place to place wreaking havoc. There probably is a place for federal law enforcement to act.

    These kind of posts expose Curt's natural conservative ideology. Encouraging divestment was a big part of ending apartheid in South Africa. Change never comes by asking nicely - the protests (and more and bigger ones) are exactly what we need to fix Israel's inhumanity to man.

    The South African divesture movement targeted businesses in South African that were not treating their Black employees fairly, that is companies not in compliance with Sullivan Principle (look it up). The current protests aren't aimed at the right businesses (if there are businesses that have any plausible responsibility). I don't know about you, but I don't blame AirBnB for the war in Gaza.

    But you may be correct when you opined that "change never comes by asking nicely". For six months international diplomats have been asking Hamas nicely to return the hostages. Those niceties haven't resulted in the desired change.

    I still disagree. You may be right about a poll you are trying to recollect saying that Biden is getting low approval marks on Gaza. It's a mess largely because Hamas is unreasonable and more than willing to sacrifice the lives of their own citizenry. I really doubt that those who are unhappy with Biden, especially the campus protestors, would like Trump's approach any better.

    Trump enjoyed the removal of lawbreakers from Columbia's campus... just as most of the world rejoiced when victims of the Nazis were freed from death camps at the end of WWII.

    Americans are witnessing evil in real time and they are noticing that Trump hates evil and Joe is silent about it.

    Nice strawman! I never said it was masters in DC that ended apartheid, although international pressure was instrumental. The South African divestitures and protests were logically targeted.

    34 years ago today, Nelson Mandela was elected president. But that wasn't the consequential election. As it happens, one of my best friends is from South Africa. He is white. Prior to that presidential election, white South Africans like my friend voted to allow all races to vote in the elections. My friend believed (and still believes) apartheid is wrong. His motivation was altruistic, not because of divestments or protests anywhere else in the world.

    On the split decisions on this site, I don't believe that for a millionth of a second. My guess? it was set up and in place prior to 10/7. They have the means and practice to do that easily within their present infrastructure. And people are too stupid to not be useful idiots.
