I don't care what anybody says. Trump's trials won't help his poll numbers.

We don’t really know Joe Biden or Donald Trump. Maybe we should listen to those who do.

The Oval Office Oaf is starting to win me over. I...DO...choose freedom over democracy.

If so, you’re more likely to be a Progressive Democrat. I have some family members who are and always have been very conservative right wing Republicans, and every single one of them disdains the idea of democracy, calling it “mob rule”. Should someone mention the preciousness of democracy in our country they are quick to respond with, “ We are not a Democracy !! We are a Republic ” !! Growing up, I don’t ever remember democracy being maligned as something bad.

Teri Kanefield has written a good article on what to me is a rather new phenomenon.

This from Teri's article;

"Another problem: when you create checks and balances and spread all the power around, it gets harder to get anything done. It also makes it harder for a dictator to take over, because it’s harder to seize control of all parts of a complicated government—but a complicated government moves slowly. When you bring together diverse groups, you have to compromise. That’s why democracy is slow grinding work.

Some people don’t like to compromise and some people are threatened by diversity. That brings me to the third form of government, what Weber calls personal charisma, which the source of authority underlying dictatorships and fascist regimes. Today we might say demagogue, or cult leader, or strongman.

People who don’t like democracy—and there are a lot of them—are drawn to a strongman who promises to cast aside the rules and get things done. Fascists are also anti-diversity. That’s why you always see them falling in line. People who dislike diversity don’t like democracy because democracy strives for fairness and inclusion. These people are attracted to a demagogue or authoritarian figure."

    It's ironic that the thing that Americans left and right hate most about our democracy is the thing that has kept it from going off the deep end... at least so far.

    I believe the thing that Donna refers to the keeps America from going off the deep end is compromise. I explored that here: "What is your political worldview?" See link.

    I define myself as a pluralist.

    PLURALISTS philosophically recognize and appreciate political diversity, which permits the peaceful coexistence of different interests, convictions, and lifestyles.

    I don't necessarily like Republican ideas and proposals but having their input and buy-in tends to make for more reasonable and long-lasting legislation.

    I don't see anything "reasonable" about a healthcare "system" that bankrupts thousands of Americans.

    Donna,
    I didn't say there was anything reasonable about that. I believe there is a middle ground between Bernie Sanders' free healthcare including vision, dental, mental for all (which doesn't exist anywhere in the world) and an all private for-profit healthcare system. Maybe it's Medicare for all who want it or Medicare for people over 50 combined with improved ACA.
