In the immediate wake of our President’s State of the Union steroid laced hour-long rant, pb posted this, in part:
To paraphrase that classic Alka Seltzer commercial, "I can't believe I watched that whole thing."
As I watched, very briefly, I thought of po. Ol po could have written that speech... and coached that tone.
It struck me as being Trump-ish... combative and divisive. It would have been perfect to rile up a gathering of billionaire Dem donors... but to an audience of purple state moderate and independent voters?... maybe not the right way to go about it.
Anyway,... how bout a little guessing game? On the morning after, on 538, Joe's approval is -18.2. (See link for updates).
Whadaya think? 538 moves slowly. It'll take a few weeks for the popular response to manifest itself. Easter will be 24 days after the speech. Let's try guessing where Joe will be in the polls.
pb's guess? -15.2.
Gang,
po and Curt chimed in after the speech and they were positively orgasmic. And, why not? The tone of the speech was angry, condemning all MAGAs..., entirely hateful.
But, in the real world? How'd Joe do?
pb thought that the speech wouldn't help Joe much. He guessed that, 3+ weeks later, by Easter, Joe'd get a three point jump... to -15.2.
Well, gang. pb was wrong. The speech didn't even get a three point jump, not even 2 points. His 538 average approval on Easter is -16.3.
The speech was designed to sure up the po/isle woke, white electric limousine lovin progressive Swampcult base and, maybe it did...minimally.
Incidentally, the hugely unpopular Trump had a -4.7 approval at this point. 11.6 points better than the "dithering and diminished" Doddering Old Fool.
