According to actuarial tables, Biden can expect about another seven years of life. Trump can expect another nine. Looking at the raw actuarial numbers both have a good chance of living to see their successor. Also both men have access to the best medical care.

The clock running faster for Trump than it is for Biden.

Subtract from whatever years Trump has left the impact of Trump's obesity. Trump has been obese for years. His diet sucks. Obesity can take years off a person's life.

Then there is stress. Stress also shortens a person's lifespan. Trump may pretend that he isn't troubled by his arrests, legal woes and the possibility of being incarcerated, but it must be stressful. It must cause a sleepless nights. It Trump isn't stressed out, then his grip on reality is severely in doubt.

Obviously, any president can die while in office. Ironically, it's our younger presidents who have died (or been killed). If you are less than enamored with Kamala Harris, consider the sort of wingnut that Trump would select as his veep.

All of that's true, but so what? The notion that Biden will probably outlive Trump isn't going to excite or draw voters.

  2. by Curt_Anderson on September 17, 2023 9:24 pm
Because some people are ageist and argue that Biden is "too old". Unless you are buying into HtS's claim that Biden is suffering from senile dementia what does it matter if Biden is old unless you believe that he won't last another four years.

Somebody responded to concerns that FDR had physical limitations by saying that Roosevelt was vying to be president not a gymnast. Being president is lot more like being a manager or a coach than a player/athlete on a sports team. Good managers, coaches and presidents are good because they have accumulated wisdom and have used their knowledge to assemble good teams.

Lincoln has his "team of rivals". FDR had his "brain trust". Biden likewise assembled a good cabinet and staff. Compare that to Trump who supposedly knew "all the best people". Trump, of course, cares not an iota about competency. He only needs people to be sycophantic loyalists. By the way, Trump's cabinet devolved markedly as his term went on. I don't even want to think about the collection of nincompoops that Trump would surround himself with in a second term.

Curt, you can complain about agism all you want, but a ckear majirity of Anerucans don't agree with you, even Democrats.

"In the [new AP] poll, fully 77% said Biden is too old to be effective for four more years. Not only do 89% of Republicans say that, so do 69% of Democrats. That view is held across age groups, not just by young people, though older Democrats [that's you, Curt, and islander) specifically are more supportive of his 2024 bid."

Biden is widely seen as too old for office, an AP-NORC poll finds. Trump has problems of his own

Conventional wisdom among people who don't only fan the flames of the preferences and prejudices that they bring with them to every moment of their lives through the woke, progressive SwampMedia.

    "God save the Queen, man."

  10. by Curt_Anderson on September 18, 2023 8:14 am
    Donna,
It is true that the AP poll found that people think Biden is too old. Fewer people, but a majority of those polled believe that Trump is too old. But take a look at the entire poll. You might be encouraged by the responses to the other questions.

For example, by large percentages, most people think that Trump acted illegally or least unethically in the courtroom cases he’s currently facing. 70% of people believe that Joe Biden won the election fair and square. Most people think that Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. Joe Biden has about a 10 point advantage over Donald Trump and favorability/in favorability.

    One word, Curt: THIRD PARTY.

  12. by Curt_Anderson on September 18, 2023 10:03 am
    HtS,
Third-parties don’t and won’t matter. In 2020 the Libertarian Party candidate earned 1.18% of the popular vote the Green Party candidate cornered .26% of the popular vote. Consequently, the libertarians have ballot access in more states then do the Greens in the 2024 election. I the libertarian party is sort of a default party for disenchanted Republicans. So the Republican nominee, presumably, Donald Trump, is more likely to lose votes to a third-party candidate, than would Joe Biden.

Robert F Kennedy, Jr. is making noise about running as a third-party candidate, but he’s more popular among Republicans than Democrats.

I have not actually studied or analyzed the issue, but I suspect that third-party candidates do better in non-swing states were voters know that their votes won’t matter. For example, a voter in California or Oregon can safely vote for a green party candidate without worrying that their vote will throw the election to Donald Trump.

  13. by HatetheSwamp on September 18, 2023 10:08 am

Usually, third parties don't matter for sure. But, both candidates are extremely flawed this time and No Labels has a lot of moolah behind it and some potentially significant candidates.

And, "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap's" support, especially is weak.

The only thing Sean and you need to worry about is keeping Trump from getting back into the White House.

As for me, I'm ridin' with Biden.

  18. by Donna on September 18, 2023 2:10 pm

I'm not worried about beating Trump. If someone even halfway reasonable from the GOP gets the nomination like Nikki Haley, Biden's toast. Wouldn't even be close.

  19. by Indy! on September 19, 2023 10:57 am

It's quite telling that for all Trump's troubles - the Rs haven't driven any nails in his coffin. They know he can beat Biden and that's all they care about. Otherwise they would simply disown him thru some sort of party apparatus.

So far as Biden, he's already disappeared for the most part. His "presidency" for all intents and purposes has been over since the covid bill was passed. Now he's just starting unnecessary wars and showing up for decorum purposes every now then - very much like Obama's "presidency" - just a show put on by the corporate masters. Remember what happened when Obama was re-elected? Yes - absolutely nothing. 4 years down the toilet with nothing at all to show for it except escalating all the unnecessary wars him and Bush pulled out of their collective asses in the previous 12 years. There's no reason at all to vote for Biden. If we HAD to vote - no choice like some countries - and the only two choices were Biden and Trump? I have no doubt Trump would win this time around. Biden got his free ride on the (wink wink) "promise" he would only be a one term guy. His one term is up.

It's comical how gullible you are - still swallowing Cold War fairy tales wholesale without even bothering to chew them a bit so you don't choke on them. Russia is corrupt - Ukraine is corrupt (and openly fascist). Neither one is a NATO country we are required to defend and there is no reason to defend them except one... MIC kick backs. Ukraine is not worthy of our defense.

Right. So what are the news sources that you use that never make any mistakes and never lie again...?

Because as per your apparent dogma, any news source that has ever been caught lying or making a mistake prints absolutely nothing but 100% lies and inaccurate info for the rest of its existence. Right? It's not as if it's possible to take what they tell us and check it for ourselves against other sources. Geez, I don't even know how anyone would go about even doing such a thing! If we watch a certain network, we are locked into believing everything it tells us and listening to nothing else from any other source. Right?

So tell me what sources to only listen to, Indy!. You know far more than I or just about anyone else does about pretty much everything. So I shall take whatever sources you tell me to follow and adopt those sites as my only source of total and objective truth.

    And thanks!

    First, it's the translation.

I think Ukraine actually wants to be free. They're not going to roll over and let the Russians actually take over. There would be a very long and drawn-out low intensity (terrorist/ guerilla) war that would drain Russia just like Afghanistan did.

I agree with your statement on Ukraine. And yet, (especially the left) came undone about the banana wars in the Carribbean (or Caribbean, or Carribean). Nicaragua, Colombia, and el Salvador were in the spotlight then. Along with the Duvalier's in Haiti. All of these were known for their murders of civilians.

In Bosnia/ Herzegovina, all sides were known to wipe out towns of the other sides in a true ethnic cleansing. That was a fight that went back to the Crusades. The Muslims in the area (Bosnyaks) were taken out for slaughter in many locations. The "UN" sent troops. Not much help. Zero leadership and political issues. Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic murdered over 100,000 people, about 80% of them Muslim. (Shot Through the Heart (TV Movie 1998 is a good film on the issue)

And yet the left was against these? Why (to everyone that wants to answer).

    OD,
Your question is essentially why do people care about Ukraine unlike some other countries in comparable situations. The answer is Zelenskyy. He is making the case to the American people on how the defense of Ukraine is the defense of democracy and territorial sovereignty. Also in some other situations both governments involved were equally bad.

Zelenskyy and Ukraine are committed to democracy. Putin is obvious autocratic despot who has political rivals killed.

  41. by HatetheSwamp on September 20, 2023 1:01 pm

    Huh, po?

I watched Paul's speech. He's not the only person pointing out that Zelenskyy is crushing freedom of speech and religion and that he's persecuting political opponents and has canceled the upcoming election...and that there's no accounting of the spending of the money the US contributes to Ukraine.

And, yo, po. pb's as hawkish on this war as anyone but pb's also said that the Doddering Old Fool had been witless and weak in conducting the war.

  42. by Ponderer on September 20, 2023 2:45 pm

Yeah I'd trust anything that crazy doofus says about as far as his lunatic dad could throw him.

  43. by Curt_Anderson on September 20, 2023 5:01 pm
    Rand Paul is a doofus.

Before he and others criticize Ukraine, study our history. America did not emerge as a fully formed democracy when we declared independence in 1776. It took 13 years before we had an "elected" president. Only a single-digit percentage of the adult male population were allowed to vote; only six states allowed any form of popular vote. It was 15 years before the Bill of Rights was ratified. Eventually by 1856 every state in America allowed some Americans the right to vote, namely property-owning or tax-paying white males. We all know it took many more years before Blacks and women could vote.

Ukraine is a nascent democracy having gained independence in 1991. In that time there was the Orange Revolution, a series of Russian stooges, and the usual combination of corruption and incompetence at the top.

Holding an election is an expensive exercise for Ukraine. Zelensky said that $135 million was needed to carry out the election during wartime. The operation would require election observers to be sent to the frontline to ensure voting was fair.

The clergy of Russian Orthodox Church for good reason has been accused of being collaborationists. As for Zelensky's political opposition, don't make a false equivalency between him and Putin. Democracy is not easy under any circumstances. Ukraine is at war and under constant attack.

American liberties have suffered when we have been at war. Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus during the Civil War. Franklin Roosevelt permitted the incarceration of Japanese-Americans during WWII. There were civil right violation during the Vietnam War.

pb, of course, is sympatico with Paul... who's juss a tad more libertarian-ish than ol pb.

    Curt,

Did you watch the video?...because it's all true.

As much as you want to believe in Zelenskyy, there's strong reason to think that what you accuse Trump of being, Zelenskyy actually is. He really is trashing free speech and freedom of religion. He really did cancel the coming of the next election.

You're clearly a true believer, but the evidence is that your guy in Ukraine is, not so subtly, setting himself up to be President-for-Life.

    *****

But, Paul's argument that is most compelling to me is that the Doddering Old Fool seems to have no notion of what victory in Ukraine would look like.

No one here is more hawkish about the strategic importance of Ukraine to the West, but I've thought that Biden's been weak and inept since before Putin attacked.

As far as I can tell, "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap's" goal for Ukraine is to feed money to the US war industry.

    HtS,
No, I’m not going to waste 10 minutes of my time listening to a Rand Paul YouTube video. If you can’t summarize his thoughts in a sentence or two they’re not worth hearing.

As for his point that Vladimir Zelinsky postponed the election in Ukraine. Paul is not acknowledging that hostile Russian forces occupy 1/5 of that country. Not to mention a good portion of his country are actively fighting the Russians, while wives and children have left the country for safe havens.

I don’t know if anybody knows what the endgame will look like in Ukraine. But that does not make it not worth fighting. When FDR and Congress declared war on Japan the day after Pearl Harbor, who envisioned that we would end the war by dropping to A-bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima?

AND...no one knows how "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap" defines victory in Ukraine...other than to feed the US war industry...

...oh, and to increase the debt we owe to China.

But, Curt, if you cared about truth and didn't worship at the altar of your MSNBC, HuffPo, NYT Trinity, so as to fan the flames of the preferences and prejudices that you bring with you to every moment of your life, you'd watch. Paul speaks for a growing number of voters.

I don't think anyone's asking for particulars. The endgame in WWII was simple. Beat the Axis Powers into submission so bad we either take their land and industry, and kill every NAZI and Tojo, or they give up.

It's like dealing in the middle east. You're dealing with multiple layers of bullshit. Yes, means maybe, maybe is never spoken. it's in'sha'a'la (if God Wills it) which means your just asked for a pipedream. And piss off.

You expect for everyone to be on the up and up.

In international politics, no one is. deal with it. Everyone is looking for their "deal." It may be a flight out of their country, so they don't get beheaded. Or maybe to live on a cruise boat until they die. It doesn't matter.

    they're all the same.
