I think I am, after all, I woke up this morning.

I began thinking, Hmmm... Does this mean I am now a member of a “woke group”? You know, the group who, like me, also woke up this morning? I know that some people went to sleep last night and never woke up which made me realize that I quite like being a member of the woke group!

Then, this morning while sipping my coffee I started to read this. For some reason it made me think of Hate and od and I really wondered if they woke up yet;

“What is Woke? The American Right made up these terms. I generally find them reactionary and histrionic. So, that is what I think. I don’t know what exactly they mean. It is like their use of the terms Social Justice Warrior, politically incorrect, feminazi and cancel culture. It is used indiscriminately. If someone simply talks about racism, they can be called part of the woke brigade. Colin Powell, a former Republican, died just a couple of years ago. He called the party out on racism a decade ago. Was that wokism? ... Marcia Buckie, Quora

A Republican governor from your corner of America attempts to define "woke".

Curt ~ I watched it twice but I still have no idea by what he meant by woke, do you? There was a lot about leadership and small government etc. but at least as far as I could tell, but nothing meaningful about what the words they were talking about mean.

    Woke:

LA DA Gascon suspends prosecutor for misgendering and 'deadnaming' trans child molester accused of murder

Just learned a new word: deadnaming. Dead-naming. Catch the irony?

    Islander,
Neither does Sununu or HtS. “Woke” is ambiguous like “The Swamp”. Conservatives can give you examples of each word but they cannot define it. At least not with any consistency. It’s those things that upset them.

Curt ~ The meaning of woke describes a person who is informed, educated and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality.

It appears to me that the right has now taken the term and changed its meaning. They use it is a derogatory term meaning something quite different.

  6. by HatetheSwamp on February 24, 2023 2:39 pm

    I guffaw regularly.

In Nineteen Eight-Four, when the story of Winston Smith ends, Orwell adds a chapter on words...the manipulation of language in the era of Big Brother. My wife and I have talked about the way the book ends. She asked, "How could Orwell have known?" And, I dunno. But he did. You two, especially, are so Orwellian! More than 70 years ago, he described this thread. Stunning. So, thanks.

  7. by Curt_Anderson on February 24, 2023 2:56 pm
Do you and your wife think that words didn't change meaning before Orwell, or that politicians have long sought to alter the language?

For example in economic terms, "depression" is a bad thing. No president wants to be accused of causing a depression. Herbert Hoover wanted a more benign and neutral term to describe the Wall Street crash of 1929 and its aftermath so he coined the term "depression" which hadn't been used in that way before. Similar economic conditions had previously been called "panics" as in the Panic of 1907, the Panic of 1893, the Panic of 1873, etc.

    No.

    Read the book.

Orwell was spot on! Look how the right has tried to change the meaning of the word "woke" to suit their purpose !!!

It was never a derogatory term before the right got hold of it

I read that book (and Animal Farm) more than fifty year ago. About that time the pejorative term "feeble minded" was replaced with the kinder "mentally retarded" as the former was considered stigmatizing. Now "mental retardation" is a pejorative and has given way to "intellectual disability".

You still cannot define "woke" and "the swamp", can you? I know, instead of defining them you will insist you've done so on these pages many times before.

But I get it. If it involves Democrats or liberals, it's "The Swamp" or it's "woke". If a Republican or a conservative does the same or a similar thing it's not. It's "woke" if Gavin Newsom told schools and teachers what they can and cannot teach; if Ron DeSantis does it, it's not.

Neither does Sununu or HtS. “Woke” is ambiguous like “The Swamp”...

I gave you a definition of it earlier.

Woke has many different meanings and has no one single meaning in politics. The best description from me would be: A person/business/organization, who believes they are progressive in their thinking and ideas, but are actually backwards and bigoted or racist depending on the topic.

It was never a derogatory term before the right got hold of it.

Maybe because the "woke" coined the phrase for themselves, then the right figured out what it really is. (see above)

  13. by HatetheSwamp on February 24, 2023 3:40 pm

    From Mirriam-Webster, and it's a hoot:

"Woke is now defined in this dictionary as “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice),” and identified as U.S. slang. It originated in African American English and gained more widespread use beginning in 2014 as part of the Black Lives Matter movement. By the end of that same decade it was also being applied by some as a general pejorative for anyone who is or appears to be politically left-leaning.

So many these days have a nose for the sanctimony of many on the left. I first noticed the term in late 016, used as it is here, as an accusation against the likes of Curt and isle...by their holier-than-thou snowflakey inability to deal with the reality that Trump beat Hillary.

It's become a pejorative aimed at progressives, and with glee. That's gotta hurt. It's our joke. You're the punchline.

  14. by Curt_Anderson on February 24, 2023 3:49 pm
    HtS,
Wait a minute, you think that we (Democrats) could not accept a presidential election loss?! I don't recall Hillary or any Democrat encouraging a raid on the Capitol or bringing frivolous sore-loser election cases to some sixty courts including the SCOTUS.

  15. by HatetheSwamp on February 24, 2023 3:54 pm

Naaaaaah, Curt. I remember election denial among DC Dems but what I enjoyed on the old forum was brain-freeze, the vexation, the consternation...and the anger focused on those vile idiots who voted for Trump.

    It was precious.

It was my favorite time on SS, by a long chalk.

"I read that book [1984] (and Animal Farm) more than fifty year ago." ~ Curt

As did I (both of them) and I re-read Orwell more recently. They are still relevant today, even more so I think as authoritarianism is once again raising its ugly head !

Not so long ago, I finished CHURCHILL AND ORWELL, by Thomas E. Rick's. Interesting insights on NINETEEN EIGHT-FOUR.
