by Curt_Anderson on September 13, 2022 2:14 pm Putin's lie to his people to justify the invasion was that Ukrainian people wanted "independence" and the Ukrainian government needed to be "de-Nazified". The problem with a lie like that it is that is that the Ukrainians' resistance and willingness to defend and die for their country reveals the true story. I imagine the Russian soldiers were shocked to discover that the Ukrainians didn't want to become part of Russia and that they liked their president and government. Of course Trump thought Putin's lie was "genius" and that Putin was "savvy". The recent Ukrainian military success may well be a tipping point in their favor. European nations, Germany in particular, have been holding off in assisting the Ukrainians with military aid. This is not unlike America's story. it was the news of the British surrender at the Battle of Saratoga in late 1777 that prompted the French government to become our allies in the Revolutionary War.
