And things are picking up real well as the holiday season gets fully going.

Etsy was really the way to go with this.

That is great! I couldn’t be happier for you. When you sell on Etsy does it have to be an item that you can repeat and reproduce like your Hummy Wands? Or could it be a one time, one of a kind item?

  2. by Ponderer on December 2, 2023 11:22 am

It doesn't have to be a production thing. Lots of people make clothing and other unique things that they sell as one-off items. Artists sell single sculptures or molded ones in the dozens.

I am loving the Etsy TV commercials that they've had in heavy rotation. The one with the log bag is my favorite. They take a good bite outta every Hummy Wand I sell. But I feel I'm getting my money's worth.

Good job, Pondy. There are a lot of sites to sell on though- the more the merrier!

It's a shame that some people are so petty that they can't bring themselves to congratulate Sheri on her success.

Thanks so much, Indy!. I know you can relate. I'm getting pretty close to selling as many as I want to make for now. And I have a new project that I am going to be spending time on here too so I gotta pace myself.

Check out this place an artist friend turned me onto a couple days ago. I've had this idea driving me crazy and no way to realize it. I almost feel like I manifested this place out of thin air! It's about 15 minutes away from our apartment. I checked it out yesterday. I found my home.

Finding this place makes me feel like I've gone from being a quadriplegic working with a stick in my teeth to having bionic super powers. Lemme tell you, this crazy muse of mine has got me in a choke hold. I am gonna be making some use of this place...

    Ponderer,
My cousin, Chris, wrote the book on the subject, "Makers: The New Industrial Revolution". See link.

A few miles from my house we have a "Maker City" which sounds like what have in Tucson. See link.

My wife and I salvage parts and mechanisms from worn out, unfixable items. We fix a lot of things most people would toss. I keep all these miscellaneous parts sorted by category in my shed. It's amazing how often we find the right part to make what we need, oftentimes "inventions" I come up with.

That looks really cool, Pondy - I'd definitely check that out if I were where you are. I need to move somewhere that I can have a 3D printer or a Glowforge to do some crazy stuff.

That book looks cool too, Curt.

Indy!, I am definitely getting a membership to this place. I may just do it initially for a one month membership. I think I can finish up the project I want to do in that time. I can't wait to get up to speed on a CNC router. And I am really looking forward to meeting some like-minded folk in a creative community setting. We haven't made any friends yet since we've been in Tucson. On my exploratory mission, I met three people who were there working on projects including the wood shop manager. They were all my age. I was told that the place is very popular with retirees.

How tied to Florida are you...? Xerocraft has five 3-D printers (none of which were being used while I was there)...

Curt, that place seems to be right out of the same mold. That's so cool that you have that place there. And your cousin's book looks really intriguing too. I may even get it. Can you imagine if there was a "maker revolution" where people could get things they need locally without being so reliant on Amazon?

  9. by Indy! on December 3, 2023 10:38 am

Pondy - I have 3 parents in their 80s or up right now in Florida. I'm pretty "tied" here. If I were to move once they've gone on to better things - it would probably be back up to north Florida or Georgia.

    Certainly. 👍

Wow !! Good going Pondy !! Ain’t it an absolutely wonderful feeling to make some money with your own two hands and no ‘boss’ telling what to do. Your time is your own and you are not responsible for someone else’s mistakes, only your own. Once you get a taste of that it’s as if a whole new world has opened up to you even you only want to do it part time on a small scale...The feeling is the same!

I’ve worked for myself virtually my whole life. It wasn’t always easy but it was always worth it !!
👍

  12. by Ponderer on December 3, 2023 5:12 pm

Thanks so much, Isle! Nice to see you again!

Yeah, it's so rewarding. It's worth it alone just for the feedback. I have a 5.0 star rating with 18 5-star reviews! People are just loving them and they are going over as gifts Big Time. I love taking as much time on them as I want to. I'm even meticulous with the packaging.

And I haven't even taken a dollar out of the account for income yet. Just for materials and such. Otherwise I'm just letting it grow. It's like a piggy bank I don't ever have to break open. Until we're looking for a down payment on a place or something.

  13. by islander on December 4, 2023 7:55 am

    Pondy,
If you just let it grow it'll be something like a garden...The work you're doing now will reward you many time over. And it's especially wonderful if you enjoy what you are doing. 😀

    Ponderer,
You and other entrepreneurs like you are doing a good thing. You generated some $2500 in sales. Some of that you keep, some of it creates jobs for the people who make your raw materials and for the people employed by Etsy. If you are so inclined, you might even hire people to make your product.

  15. by Ponderer on December 4, 2023 9:52 am

I just got back from taking six orders to the post office. Yesterday was a new record for the most orders in a day: four.

I really do enjoy it, Isle. We'll see where this gets by next Christmas. Or maybe in the spring when the hummies start invading everywhere again.

And thanks, Curt. I've had those same thoughts. I'm even helping keep the post office alive!

I gotta finish up this batch today that I've been working on. My inventory is down to only five now...
