Let's all remember what Indy's been saying for years: Cable news is dying. And, this brief O'Reilly video makes that point, too.

Still, when Fox dumped Tucker, the whole pb crowd told Fox b'bye and Fox is paying a serious price.

First off... damn has he gotten old. Secondly, his characterizations of both networks are hilariously out of touch with reality. There's a simple reason why Fox is (or has been) the "#1" cable news network... Because they're the only channel that wears their hatred of the left on their sleeve. All the other networks are rightwing too - but they keep it under wraps. So it's one channel - Fox - getting all the old codgers and rightwingnuts vs. about 10 other networks who pretend to be a little liberal and split the audience 10 ways. If we were in the days of 3 networks and it was Fox vs. MSNBC vs. Network X - Fox would perennially be #3 because they would be the social outcast network. It's the same reason why OD's favorite movie - Sound of (whatever it is) - was a "big hit". Or Ann Coulter's books are "big sellers" - because the entire wingnut population buys in the same way the GOP without fail votes for the same candidate in every election. The left - even the barely left like the MSNBC audience - are individualists who think for themselves. Groupthink rules the GOP.

Okay - now that we have that aside. The reason MSNBC won the ratings war this week is simple - Trump is in trouble. I've made this point many times in the past. This is why the Ds will do everything they can to save him. Because they need Trump for ratings and to move voters to the polls. Trump gets indicted, MSNBC goes 24/7 "the walls are closing in" and the D faithful suddenly tune in the same way Rs ALWAYS tune in - as a group.

I think that I've mentioned this before, but I have always gone to MSNBC whenever I want to get the full and total scoop on some legal occurrence like a trial or a hearing that I am interested in. They are the best at presenting actual court documents and going into detail and explaining all the ins and outs of it all. And when you want some editorializing based on the facts, their resident stable of extremely experienced commentators are the best people you would want to hear from.

For someone like me who is totally enjoying the entertainment value of the "Trump's Karma Show" that has been running for quite a long time now, MSNBC is a valuable resource. No other networks will get into the weeds of a legal issue like they do. I believe that the word for what they do is journalism.

  3. by Ponderer on August 25, 2023 4:26 pm

And hey Bill, O'Reilly mentioned Ari Melber as being pretty good...? You might be able to stand him. He's one of my favorites anyways.

  4. by Indy! on August 25, 2023 4:34 pm

The MSNBC "experts" are a bunch of corporate tools working for the oligarchs. That goes for the only one I like too - Alex Wagner. Step away from it for a year or so and come back and you'll be shocked at how completely they had the wool pulled over your eyes, Pondy,.

And I hate to have to point this out again after what happened in 2016, but giving Trump all that free air time only helps him. The networks free campaign time for Trump went a looooooooooong way in helping him get re-elected. It is estimated he got as much $1.4 billion in free advertisement in 2016. So if you're wondering how he got elected without spending any of his own money or raising it from others? There's your answer.

  5. by Indy! on August 25, 2023 4:36 pm

That should be "elected" - no re-elected. Although it may be "re-elected" too the way things are going.

  6. by Ponderer on August 25, 2023 8:40 pm

So if I'm following you, Indy!... You think it would be best for me to stop watching the best and only source of coverage there is of the information I want... so that I can better... not... get any of the information I want?

Where else is going to give me the full lowdown on Trump's various and sundry trials, indictments, subpoenas, plea agreements, contempt of court charges and such? I'm sure that you must have a specific network or channel in mind to suggest to me if you're going to suggest such a thing.

    So lay it on me...

  7. by Ponderer on August 25, 2023 8:44 pm

And I seriously doubt that there were many if any Trump voters who became Trump voters from watching the coverage of him on MSNBC.

Six. I'll believe as many as six. No more.

I'd like Ari Melber better if would dispense with the references to obscure rap lyrics.

  9. by Indy! on August 25, 2023 11:55 pm

Agreed, Curt. A lawyer trying to pretend he’s hip because he knows some rap songs is a bad look.

Pondy, think of it this way… why are you looking for information you “wanf” in the first place? The very nature of the word “news” says it’s not supposed to come from a preconceived position - ie: something you “want”. It’s supposed to be original and “new” - a surprise… maybe something good you want or something bad you don’t want, but is important for you to know anyway. 😉

    Gang,

I haven't watched one minute of cable news on TV since Fox's Tucker Carlson fiasco...on any network. I'm fed up with all the silly Swamp games. They all pretend to report news. All they do is preach...and coddle to the prejudices of their viewers.

I told isle t'other day that if I want to be preached at, I'll break down and go to church.

All I do now is podcasts and other forms of alternative media...

...but I'm happy to see Fox suffer.

"I'd like Ari Melber better if would dispense with the references to obscure rap lyrics." -Curt

Ari is a massive and extremely knowledgeable fan of Hip Hop music. He's actually very well known and liked by the Hip Hop community. It's not really my cup of coffee, but I don't begrudge him including references to rap songs or rap artists that are sometimes extremely poetic ways of commenting on the subject matter from a different perspective. I think watching his show provides a great opportunity to get an introductory exposure to that community and the things that are important to them, as they are to any American. He even has Hip Hop artists on as guests and interviews them for the last segment of his show sometimes. And it helps him garner a younger audience too.

But he's also a lawyer. And he brings his legal expertise to play when dealing with and explaining all the legal mumbo-jumbo of legal cases and trials and the like.

I hadn't ever looked up his details until just now. He's way more accomplished and experienced than I thought. Apparently, his show's ratings have been the highest of any other show on the network...

In 2023, "The Beat" had the highest ratings of any show on MSNBC or CNN, "outranking everything else on MSNBC — the first time in the network’s 27 years that a show outside the prime-time window took top honors," per the New York Times.

In 2023, "The Beat's" ratings were 46% higher than the prior year among viewers under the age of 55 ("demo").

Anyway, if you can get past his occasional Hip Hop references, he's got a show that is very worth watching and is quite rewarding. I have his show set to tape and watch it after we watch a baseball game or two.

Huh. Well perhaps the fact that I don't look to MSNBC specifically for "news" has something to do with it.

So... I shouldn't have an interest in anything specific happening in current events? I can't watch MSNBC to get details I can't get anywhere else about specific events that I am interested in getting details about AND get "news" from various other sources? It has to be one or the other? If I get my news from various sources, I can't also watch MSNBC? "The News" is something that I'm supposed to just passively accept as it is fed to me only by the sources you approve of?? And that's all the detail that anyone needs about anything?

    Yeah, no. Pass. thanks.

Remember a few years ago when Rachel was leaked those two pages of Trump's tax return and she made a really big deal about it and everyone laughed at her over it? "Wow! TWO WHOLE PAGES! What a scoop! Ha ha ha ha!!!"? Remember?

Well the part that people who didn't watch that episode are unaware of was what was on those two particular pages. He had claimed on one of those two pages of his tax return that some property was assessed at such and such low ball amount. Rachel and her team did some research and found insurance and loan documents that were in the public record that he filed to get a loan against and/or insurance for that property and he claimed that the property was worth like three or more times what he claimed it was worth on his income tax return.

Right there, Rachel uncovered the first of what was to become a multitude of evidence of Trump's illegal tax fraud and insurance fraud and bank fraud and real estate fraud and charity fraud and election fraud etc., etc., etc..... It was but a hint of what was yet to come. But everyone wanted to just laugh at her instead. Even though she had in fact scooped everyone who was laughing at her. Well, I guess they had to laugh.

This is an example of why I get a bit peeved at those who criticize what they know nothing whatsoever about.

  13. by Donna on August 26, 2023 8:29 am

Yeah, I have to say that Ari Melber is my favorite MSNBC show host. The two Republicans here might like his show. To my knowledge he's the only MSNBC show host who has Republicans on as guests - not every episode, but fairly often.

  14. by Ponderer on August 26, 2023 8:36 am

Yeah that's right, hon. He has Republicans on who wouldn't touch Rachel's show with a ten-foot pole.
