(NY Times) WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump pressed top Justice Department officials late last year to declare that the election was corrupt even though they had found no instances of widespread fraud, so that he and his allies in Congress could use the assertion to try to overturn the results, according to new documents provided to lawmakers and obtained by The New York Times.

The demands were an extraordinary instance of a president interfering with an agency that is typically more independent from the White House to advance his personal agenda. They are also the latest example of Mr. Trump’s wide-ranging campaign during his final weeks in office to delegitimize the election results.

The exchange unfolded during a phone call on Dec. 27 in which Mr. Trump pressed the acting attorney general at the time, Jeffrey A. Rosen, and his deputy, Richard P. Donoghue, on voter fraud claims that the department had disproved. Mr. Donoghue warned that the department had no power to change the outcome of the election. Mr. Trump replied that he did not expect that, according to notes Mr. Donoghue took memorializing the conversation.

“Just say that the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me” and to congressional allies, Mr. Donoghue wrote in summarizing Mr. Trump’s response.

There's no doubt that Trump handled this poorly but that doesn't alter the realities that have tens of millions of us convinced that the former 18 wheeler driver from Delaware stole the election.

There are countless falsehoods on all sorts of topics that crackpots and the gullible believe. Just because some people--even when it's millions of them--believe something doesn't make it true.

The more intelligent of the not-so-intelligent who are inclined to believe a falsehood should realize that if there was any validity to Trump's claims he wouldn't have needed to resort to criminal efforts to subvert justice and as he said, "leave the rest to me."

Can you pause for a moment to realize that these words describe YOU to me.

We all have our own truth, even,...especially...you!

I assume the "YOU" in this case is the plural you encompassing dozens of judges, election officials, election analysts, Trump's DOJ, the news media and others who have looked into the alleged "election fraud".

On your side you have millions of believers in the "steal" but we have more people who believe the election accurately and fairly reflected the will of the people.

I meant you in the singular because this dialogue is between us but, certainly, others embrace the same narrative as you.

    Trump offers a non-denial denial
In an email to his supporters on Saturday, Trump accused Democrats of misrepresenting the notes.

Trump attempted to reverse the blame, writing, "The corrupt and highly partisan House Democrats who run the House Oversight Committee yesterday released documents—including court filings dealing with the rigged election of 2020—that they dishonestly described as attempting to overturn the election."

"In fact, it is just the opposite," Trump added in his Saturday statement. "The documents were meant to uphold the integrity and honesty of elections and the sanctity of our vote."

"The American People want, and demand, that the President of the United States, its chief law enforcement officer in the country, stand with them to fight for Election Integrity and to investigate attempts to undermine our nation," the former president continued. "Our country has just suffered an incredibly corrupt Presidential Election, and it is time for Congress and others to investigate how such corruption was allowed to take place rather than investigating those that are exposing this massive fraud on the American People."

Poor guy. If he hasn't appreciated the power and evil of the Swamp by now, he never will.
