So the federal government is pawning everything off on each other. Agencies are looking for excuses NOT to help a financially strapped area of Ohio (a double whammy). Exposure to liquid polyethene Chloride (polychloride) ranks right there with hexamine as dangerous. It doesn't go away quickly, and is harder then hell to neutralize. We know this because it stays in landfills for generations. In the body, the gas gets into the alveoli where it solidifies and cuts off the ability of the lungs to transfer gasses.

FEMA won't do anything. EPA is limited in what it can do. The Railroad company is paying for some things. The train was unworthy to carry anything 2 days before the wreck, but it was still used.

Trump is to blame. Which is interesting. Because it was Trump per se that did this, it had to be an EO. Out of all the EO's that were overturned on nearly everything Trump did, this one was left alone by the eco- friendly woke leftists. I find that interesting.

The residents of East Palestine have been told they are ineligible for FEMA help because their homes weren't physically destroyed - even though they may be chemically contaminated.

While residents have been told it is safe to return to their homes, many are hesitant and unwilling to accept the assurances of state and federal officials.

As a result, they are staying in hotels that are currently being paid for by Norfolk Southern - the rail company whose train derailed two weeks ago.

But there has been a notable lack of support from President Biden and Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The lack of federal support is tormenting residents in the town, who last night demanded to know why Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg didn't attend a town meeting about the crisis.

'Where's Pete Buttigieg? Where's he at?' one man asked. An exasperated Mayor Trent Conaway replied: 'I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine.'

President Biden is yet to comment on the disaster, which began on February 3 when a Norfolk Southern train carrying vinyl chloride and other hazardous materials derailed.

The president underwent a physical exam at Walter Reed this afternoon and is due back at the White House shortly, where he is scheduled to give a media briefing on unexplained UFOs that were shot down over the weekend.

So perhaps the "president" will make a statement over the cemetery of the East Palestine victims dedicated to the trainwreck we call the pedojoe administration.

I can't imagine what the residents of East Palestine are going through. I'd be scared to death to continue living there.

Are there any scientific measurements of the supposed air-contamination? Or is the evidence all anecdotal?

Whatever was spilled I am sure was toxic and stinky, but fumes and smells eventually dissipate. Not every runny nose, cough, headache and sneeze can be attributed to the same source. I can believe that a water source could have long-lasting damage, air not so much. Even something like the Exxon Valdez spill eventually is clean again, in large part due to nature being resilient.

Thanks HtS, so I take it there is no scientific measures of harmful air contamination. Funny how Republicans were not up in arms about the water system pollution in Jackson MS or Flint MI. What could be the difference?

  7. by HatetheSwamp on February 16, 2023 2:51 pm

I'm guessing you're not following what's happening. Small animals are dying. People are getting sick. You seem to hold the otherworldly opinion that science is both omniscient and omnipotent. It ain't. And, only a fool would imagine that it is.

Um...I think somebody might be trying to imply that Biden is to blame for this disaster by rescinding many of Trumps EOs...However...

Steven Ditmeyer, a former top official at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), said “the severity of the accident was likely increased by the lack of Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brakes”.

A rule was passed under President Barack Obama that made it a requirement for trains carrying hazardous flammable materials to have ECP brakes, but this was rescinded in 2017 by the Trump administration.

"USDOT [Department of Transportation] has been supporting the investigation led by The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Our Federal Rail Administration and Pipelines and Hazardous Materials teams were onsite within hours of the initial incident and continue to be actively engaged,"

"We will look to these investigation results & based on them, use all relevant authorities to ensure accountability and continue to support safety."

Buttigieg added the federal Environmental Protection Agency remained on site, where they are monitoring indoor and outdoor air quality following the release of toxic chemicals.

What, exactly, were were Trump's EOs that Biden rescinded regarding this?

How is this a federal government issue? I don’t recall FEMA being called in to clean up the mess of private enterprise. As far as I know FEMA is for natural disasters…and Republicans grumble about that. Norfolk Southern is at fault and they should make things right.

Seems that I nailed it yet again. See #2, my first post, in this thread.

Since a train carrying hazardous materials derailed in Ohio nearly two weeks ago, residents have feared for their safety. A controlled burn of the toxic materials has filled the air and covered surface waters and soil with chemicals. Dead fish have floated in nearby creeks, and an unnerving aroma has lingered in the air.

But for many commentators from across the political spectrum, the speculation has gone far beyond known facts. Right-wing commentators have been particularly critical, using the crisis to sow distrust about government agencies and suggest that the damage could be irreparable.

On social media like Twitter and Telegram, commentators have called the situation the “largest environmental disaster in history” or simply “Chernobyl 2.0,” invoking the 1986 nuclear disaster. They warned, without evidence, that vital water reservoirs serving states downriver could be badly contaminated. And they suggested that the authorities, railroad companies and mainstream news media were purposefully obscuring the full toll of the crisis.

Honestly, you post only means you don't care about the human beings and the ecosystems there and what it's doing to every living thing there and downwind for years to come.

The environmental and Health effects are Liver toxicity, Cancerous tumors, Environment pollution, and Microbial remediation. The smoke from the burning is twice as heavy as the surrounding air. While burning, if it comes in contact with water, it self-combusts. It is toxic to the people, all animal life, plant life, water systems and the general environment. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes were introduced in the 1960s as alternatives to other plumbing materials available at the time. While it’s estimated that PVC pipes will last about 100 years, the exact lifespan isn’t known because PVC piping hasn’t been around that long yet.

According to the EPA, "vinyl chloride emissions from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene dichloride (EDC), and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) plants cause or contribute to air pollution that may reasonably be anticipated to result in an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible, or incapacitating reversible illness. Vinyl chloride is a known human carcinogen that causes a rare cancer of the liver."

I just know the elements and hazards of polychloride. I know it goes back in to the soil at the same rate as the PVC on your house. You obviously don't care about the people there and the fact they're being stonewalled and will die from this. It doesn't surprise me, it's your MO.

This is a poor town that have few options for the people living there.

So what's your solution? Put them in one of your camps to die? or do you just want to firebomb the area with the people in it? That would at least kill them faster, and you can just count the coffins and make a deal of that. Maybe you'll get three or four that they find enough to put in that coffin so you can count it. My belief is these are human beings that you are, above all, playing politics with.

They need help. The administration won't talk about it, and FEMA refuses to do anything. Yes, YOUR government, the one you support every day regardless of the subject, is guilty of murdering this town.

What pb's blaming Biden’s string pullers is appointing Pot Hole Pete as Secretary of Transportation...another disastrous woke appointment.
