1. A proposed new law (a bill) is introduced by a First Reading - an official notice that a Bill is going to be proposed. This gives MPs time to prepare.
2. After this comes a second reading and the key concepts are considered and discussed on the floor of the House.
3. The Bill is then sent to be examined in detail by small groups of MPs.
4. The Bill is then debated in the House of Commons. If it is approved by the majority, then it is passed to the House of Lords.
5. Once the Bill has been passed by the House of Lords, it is sent for the Royal Assent (sent for approval from the monarch)
