Hours after Manchin abruptly delivered what many saw as a potentially fatal blow to one of the centerpieces of Biden’s agenda with his declaration that he “just can’t” support it, White House press secretary Jen Psaki unleashed a blistering 712-word written statement accusing him of making a “sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position” and calling his comments a “breach of his commitments” to Biden and Democratic lawmakers, if he has decided to end negotiations.
“I think he’s going to have a lot of explaining to do to the people of West Virginia to tell ’em why he doesn’t have the guts to take on the drug companies to lower the cost of prescription drugs, why he is not prepared to expand home health care,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Rather than seeking to defuse hostilities as some Democrats had hoped, the White House lashed out at Manchin, issuing the written statement from Psaki rebutting Manchin’s concerns point by point, and concluded that if he walks away from the talks, he would be breaking his word to Biden.
For much of the time I participated on the old forum, I was a registered Dem. In fact, the first presidential election in which I voted as a registered GOP was 2016, though, admittedly, by then, I rarely voted for a Dem candidate.
I've always been a news junkie and an enthusiastic voter. And, for almost all of that time, a committed Dem voter.
I've said many times that I'm one of the few who voted against Reagan twice. In spite two of the huge landslides, I voted for Carter and Mondale. I even voted for Dukakis...who lost 426-111 in the Electoral College.
I was as devoted a Dem as anyone, though, increasingly, I was at odds with the direction the party leaders took.
There was a time, on particular issues, I agreed more with the other party than with the Dems but happily remained a Dem.
For a long time, diversity among Dems was accepted. Tolerance was talked...and walked.
But the time came when I began to understand that having a big tent in which a diversity of thought was no longer something Dems wanted.
And, so, 44 years after I voted for Hubert Humphrey in my first presidential primary, I stepped into a voting booth as Republican.
There's a way in which Joe Manchin is my Patron Saint. He's remained loyal to the party, even in spite of substantial differences.
Yet, it's easy to conclude that Jen Psaki, speaking for the President, Bernie, all the members of the Squad and many other Dems...including at least some of the Blue MAGA posters here, hate Manchin more than James Earl Ray hated the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr..
Go for it, Joe.
GOPs are speculating that you'll become one of them. Don't do it!
Stand up for diversity. Tolerance. Inclusion. Be a real dem, even if Jen, Bernie, AOC ain't!
True, you are a dinosaur. Once, nearly every American was you. Now, you're pret'near extinct.
