Democratic leaders have pulled out the stops to help Terry McAuliffe's struggling campaign for governor of Virginia. Figures from Barack Obama to Stacey Abrams have stumped for McAuliffe, who is in a tight race with businessman Glenn Youngkin.

The key for McAuliffe is Black voters and, to spur turnout, Vice President Kamala Harris has taped an endorsement of McAuliffe that is reportedly being played at hundreds of African American churches around the state. The problem is the "Johnson Amendment" makes such political pitches in churches a violation of federal law.

As many of you know, I was deeply involved in institutionalized Christianity for many, many years.

The First Amendment is real. Government is not permitted to prohibit the "free exercise of religion."

However, in institutional Christianity members of the clergy class are well schooled not to mess with the IRS.

According to the Pharisees in the IRS, however, ministers or churches are not permitted to endorse any candidate IN A CHURCH FACILITY OR AS A PART OF A CHURCH ACTIVITY.

And, Kammy crossed the line, the stupid fool. Who's advising her anyway!

This, po, could be actually impeachable!

I don't know all of the particulars but I don't think Kammy can actually get into trouble. However, any church that plays her recorded campaign ad could be in deep doodoo for doing it. It can receive IRS penalties.

It could even lose it tax exempt status, which churches shouldn't have anyway.

"Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes."

From what you describe, it doesn't sound like Harris herself violated the Johnson Amendment (if that in fact is a law). Maybe the churches violated the rule.

Blaming Harris would be like blaming Trump for the various radio, TV and podcast preachers who endorse Trump.

As I said, I don't think that Kammy can get in trouble and she probably doesn't have a heart so it may not matter to her if a church, or church leader, gets in trouble.
