I considered posting something like this a while back. About a month ago.

About a month ago, I'd run out of novels, available through my library, that I wanted to read. One way of accessing what's available from the library on line is a list that presents the books with the most popular first. I went there. A few down from the top was one by Robert Galbraith, of whom I'd never heard, in Galbraith's series featuring his character Cormoron Strike, a private investigator. I figured, what the hey. I checked it out and gave it a try. Galbraith, and Strike, are British. Not my fave but, y'know, nuthin ventured nuthin gained.

It turns out that Galbraith is a very good writer. The plot was above average but the story was told well. I already knew that the book I had was the third in the series. So, I did a little research.

I discovered that Robert Galbraith is a nom de plume used by J. K. Rowling.

I've never even sniffed a HARRY POTTER book, nor movie. I couldn't possibly be less interested. But, yikes. Rowling is a very good writer. Most of the world already knows that, I know.

I put a hold on the first book in the series, THE CUCKOO'S CALLING. I'm about a fifth of the way through it. It's good. Cormoron Strike is a PI. His secretary, Robin, whom he picked up as a temp, is as bright and imaginative as is he. In the first few chapters, Strike muses that they might be a Batman, Robin duo. They are more Holmes and Watson, or Poirot and Hastings, than Batman and Robin, though Strike's Robin is not dimwitted.

Rowling ain't Agatha Christie. No one is. But, if you're in to that sort of thing, give Galbraith and Strike a try.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

    HtS,
A very interesting review and information. I take it my reference to Death Eaters in the Trump Taxes thread meant nothing to you.

I read the entire Harry Potter series aloud to my then-young son at his bedtime. Rawlings improved noticeably as a writer as the series progressed. Reading aloud exposes awkward sentences.

He's going to continue to ignore your Death Eaters reference.

Not ignore. I didn't notice it. When I see a post that strikes me as TDS hate or irrationality, I either stop reading or skim. My guess is that that's what happened. But, if either of you can dig it up, I'll consider it in this context.

Bullshit. You would have had to read Curt's first sentence, "A very interesting review and information. I take it my reference to Death Eaters in the Trump Taxes thread meant nothing to you" in order to determine if his post was "TDS".

    Donna,

pb has absolutely no idea what Curt's reference to Death Eaters in the Trump Taxes thread was. Like Alicia Silverstone, I'm clueless...and proud to be.

BTW, gang, I finished THE CUCKOO'S CALLING. It was a little slow in the middle but finished strong. Having read the third in the series, I had some spoilers to deal with but I'll continue reading in the series from time to time.
