The announcement Wednesday of an agreement in the Senate almost instantly reset the role of the United States in the global effort to fight climate change.

WASHINGTON — The $369 billion climate and tax package forged in a surprise deal by Senate Democrats on Wednesday would be the most ambitious action ever taken by the United States to try to stop the planet from catastrophically overheating.

The agreement, which Senate Democrats hope to pass as early as next week, shocked even some who had been involved in the sputtering negotiations over climate legislation during the past year. The announcement of a deal, after many activists had given up hope, almost instantly reset the role of the United States in the global effort to fight climate change.

And it was delivered by Senator Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, the holdout Democrat who had been reviled by environmentalists and some of his own colleagues after he said this month that he could not support a climate bill because of inflation concerns.

But whether it makes it to the president's desk to be signed, this says to me that if a person favors clean, renewable sources of energy and reduced health care costs that their best and only hope are Democrats in Congress. Conservatives want a "transition." That means everything for now, and work hard on the options. At this time, solar panels are a waste dump of crap that cannot be reused and is too expensive to recycle. Wind turbine blades simply cannot be recycled. Batteries are horrible for the environment at this time. They tried to put tide turbines off the coast of Nantucket and the "kennedy's" complained that it wasn't good for the view. Work on that as we're transitioning areas (of both type of energy, and grid expectations) And yes, conservatives still are the leaders in conservation. Zero tax dollars go in to state parks in CO. Everything is done through gaming licenses, park passes, etc. We just don't want to decimate the economy or people's lives. Sheep don't give a flying fuk about people being able to feed their families or get heating oil on the east coast, or LPG in the US and Canada. They would rather see people die. Actually it works the whole "over population" thing out for them. Certainly no more offensive than telephone wires, powerlines or old fashion windmills that every farm had 100 years ago to pump water from a well and/or provide electricity to the farmhouse. by oldedude on July 28, 2022 3:39 pm I'm with you. No big deal and a lot of farmers that now can't have a second income because they can't pump oil, are turning to windmills on the plains. Near the cities you have a lot of solar farms.
