This is what real hatred of freedom looks like. I think it's more about fear than hatred though.

China's authoritarian government is afraid of freedom.

“The new film rules in Hong Kong will have a chilling effect,” Piscatella told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year after the new censorship law was announced, adding, “One of the last vestiges of free speech in Hong Kong is now gone. The result is self-censorship by filmmakers who now have to question what might run afoul of the new rules and increased scrutiny by financiers and distributors who now must consider that very same question.”

"The censorship of such content would come as no surprise in Mainland China, where any mention of the 1989 massacre of pro-democracy student protestors has been scrubbed from public discourse. But the apparent voluntary removal of the episode in Hong Kong — especially when done by a major U.S. media company — is a relatively new feature of civic life there."

Two thoughts, Donna.

First, I'm appalled by this at least as much as you. I'm with you on your take: "This is what real hatred of freedom looks like. I think it's more about fear than hatred though."

Second, perhaps you can understand that, from my point of view, what appalls you about China is true of you, too. Certainly, it's a matter of degree and, absolutely, a very significant degree. But, my continuing rant against Blue MAGA progressives is that you live in denial of the fact that ours is a nation founded on a radical belief in the freedom of the individual, which is carefully and intentionally put into writing and preserved by our Bill of Rights.

Can you understand how I feel when my take on you is that you're afraid to allow the rest of us to be free?

I think your views on freedom are extreme. Most of our rights aren't absolute - they have restrictions that often are there for public safety, which probably most Americans think are reasonable.

I was certain that you believe what you believe sincerely. And, I respect that.

(This is a difference between sanctimonious progressives and others. po always assumes...

...it's been well more than a decade so don't tell me I'm wrong,...I've been on the business end of po's sanctimony slap many times.

I accept you for what you believe, and respect it, and I respect you...but I strenuously disagree.)

I'm only saying that you appear to me to be of the same ilk as the Chinese... separated only many degrees. Your feelings about the Chinese splain my understanding of and reaction to your too easy desire to limit the freedom of people who think differently than you.

You yourself are far less guilty than most here.
