Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary, a lodestar for MAGA culture warriors and right-wing populists in Europe, conceded defeat on Sunday in a general election, breaking the momentum of a global nationalist revival promoted by President Trump.

Speaking to supporters Sunday evening in Budapest, Mr. Orban said the “election results, although not complete, are understandable and clear. They are painful for us but unequivocal.”

He congratulated the opposition in his surprisingly early and gracious concession speech, saying: “The responsibility and opportunity to govern were not given to us.”

But, he also vowed: “We are not giving up. Never, never, never.”

Sunday’s vote was widely seen as showdown between friends and foes of liberal democracy, a cause that Mr. Orban has battled against for years to applause from his fans in the United States, Europe and Latin America. It was closely watched by the Trump administration and the Kremlin, both of which wanted Mr. Orban to win and both of which offered support in his campaign.

olde dude's a fan of Orban too. Gotta hand it to Orban for, unlike trump, being a good sport and graciously accepting the loss, though. And good on Hungarians for finally rejecting authoritarisnism.

A game changing event. Now, the EU can go ahead with its funding of Ukraine. Since Trump has ended all US funds, the hold-up by Orban has meant Ukraine would collapse in the next couple of months if this had n=been a different result.

Good point, Meagain! I had forgotten about that obstacle in regards to Ukraine.

Watching the huge crowds in Hungary one can't help but see in them the same thing that we saw in the crowds that came out against the illegal tactics of ICE, and the huge No Kings protests here in our country. We the people refuse to allow authoritarian leaders to smother democracy and attempt to ignore our constitution by dictating their own laws...and then try to force us to conform to them. Trump and his gang of MAGA Republican thugs and cowards are now in the same boat as Urban...and it's going down fast... 👍

Peter Magyar's party, Fidesz, also won two-thirds of the seats in the Hungarian parliament! That's great news for Europe, Ukraine, and the world. Don't you agree, olde dude?

They just went from far right to center right. Orban had been there for 16 years. That's like 150 in dog years. There's also been a lot of "issues" with the country since the 1980s/1990s with that whole area, so this is good news, but the country is still holding on to their nationalism. But are easing off of the war mentality. I wasn't a big fan, but he was leading the country peacefully. That's kind of a new concept in the region.

Was he horrible? not considering the wars around him. Why do liberals hate him with a passion? He's conservative and extremely religious Orthodox Christianity. This was part of what drew the country together at the beginning. Does he "dislike" Muslims? Absolutely. They tried to take over his country and made no bones about murdering anyone in the Orthodox religion.

Remember, these are the countries of Slobodan Milošević, the guy that made Muslim villages disappear, with mass graves outside the towns. Also, there were the "sniper wars" and "Sarajevo Safaris" where rich guys would go "human hunting" with local snipers and they could kill Muslim men, women, and children looking for stove fuel and groceries for a very high price.

What we do know, is there are still free elections there. That's wonderful, regardless of what the results are, I haven't heard of anyone getting dead over the election. Secondarily Orban left on his own accord. That's a pretty big thing there. About half the countries are still who they are through virile hatred. Kinda like being a black right after the war of northern aggression. There are several good examples of this, but the best is the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia- Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia, etcetcetc...

So my view. Chickenshitting this won't do any good. He has the most stable country around there other than the Czech Republic and Slovakia, who didn't have near the issues the other countries did.
