I just got off the phone with my sister. She's a retired VA worker and department head who has years of VA experience under her belt. She told me about having been brought to tears after watching a video that was made by fellow coworkers of Alex Pretti in the ICU of the VA where he worked.
You may have already seen a video that is going around of Alex, along with his coworkers, honoring a veteran who had passed away as the body was moved from the ICU facility. My sister told me that this is a standard practice of honoring our fallen veterans. Many a time she had gotten the email to stand in the hallway along with her coworkers, with her hand over her heart to honor one of our departed service members as their remains passed by them.
But it's a different video that she had watched that had her crying.
The coworkers in the ICU where Alex Pretti had worked had organized their own veteran's memorial for their fallen comrade. Of course they didn't have his actual remains to do it with, so they simply placed an American flag over a gurney. Those who weren't veterans themselves standing to honor him held their hands over their hearts. And those who are veterans actually saluted the memorial as it passed by them in their most devout act to honor his sacrifice.
And Alex Pretti wasn't even a veteran.
My sister said that in all her years with the VA and from every other person she's spoken with that also worked at one, she and they had never heard of such a thing ever being done for anyone who hadn't been a veteran. And it was that she knew what this meant for them to do it that had her sobbing.
They did it because Alex Pretti is just as much a hero to them and to America as any soldier who ever died in a foreign trench. They felt him to be just as much of a hero as any military veteran who ever passed through that VA. He was one of their own.
I believe that this poor innocent American victim of this domestically terroristic fascist regime deserves to have a memorial erected and dedicated to him outside of that VA facility to further honor his ultimate sacrifice of facing down fascist tyranny in this once great country.
