The bad news is that the Trump administration is corrupt. The good news is that they are incompetent.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Dozens of reporters turned in access badges and exited the Pentagon on Wednesday rather than agree to government-imposed restrictions on their work, pushing journalists who cover the American military further from the seat of its power. The U.S. government has called the new rules “common sense.”

News outlets were nearly unanimous in rejecting new rules imposed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that would leave journalists vulnerable to expulsion if they sought to report on information — classified or otherwise — that had not been approved by Hegseth for release.

Many of the reporters waited to leave together at a 4 p.m. deadline set by the Defense Department to get out of the building. As the hour approached, boxes of documents lined a Pentagon corridor and reporters carried chairs, a copying machine, books and old photos to the parking lot from suddenly abandoned workspaces. Shortly after 4, about 40 to 50 journalists left together after handing in badges.

“It’s sad, but I’m also really proud of the press corps that we stuck together,” said Nancy Youssef, a reporter for The Atlantic who has had a desk at the Pentagon since 2007. She took a map of the Middle East out to her car.

It is unclear what practical impact the new rules will have, though news organizations vowed they’d continue robust coverage of the military no matter the vantage point.

Images of reporters effectively demonstrating against barriers to their work are unlikely to move supporters of President Donald Trump, many of whom resent journalists and cheer his efforts to make their jobs harder. Trump has been involved in court fights against The New York Times, CBS News, ABC News, the Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press in the past year.

Trump supports the new rules
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Trump backed his defense secretary’s new rules. “I think he finds the press to be very disruptive in terms of world peace,” Trump said. “The press is very dishonest.”

Even before issuing his new press policy, Hegseth, a former Fox News Channel host, has systematically choked off the flow of information. He’s held only two formal press briefings, banned reporters from accessing many parts of the sprawling Pentagon without an escort and and launched investigations into leaks to the media.

He has called his new rules “common sense” and said the requirement that journalists sign a document outlining the rules means they acknowledge the new rules, not necessarily agree to them. Journalists see that as a distinction without a difference.

“What they’re really doing, they want to spoon-feed information to the journalist, and that would be their story. That’s not journalism,” said Jack Keane, a retired U.S. Army general and Fox News analyst, said on Hegseth’s former network.

When he served, Keane said he required new brigadier generals to take a class on the role of the media in a democracy so they wouldn’t be intimidated and also see reporters as a conduit to the American public. “There were times when stories were done that made me flinch a little bit,” he said. “But that’s usually because we had done something that wasn’t as good as we should have done it.”

    HtS,
"Hegseth that would leave journalists vulnerable to expulsion if they sought to report on information — classified or otherwise — that had not been approved by Hegseth for release."

IOW, Hegseth wants journalists to become stenographers merely disseminating Pentagon press releases.

How is it not journalism, po? "You keep using that word. I do not think that word means what you think it does."

So he's trying to prevent leaks, no? And with TDP, there's no doubt people would leak classified info operations that if it's exposed prematurely, would get people killed. I know no one cares about murdering your own people, especially military members just to suit your own selfish needs, but for the families of those folks it's pretty important.

I think what's interesting is that people expect transparency for classified things that go on. And both sides that are bad at it. obomber was so paranoid, he imprisoned several folks, one who took a picture. Granted, he shouldn't have done it, but to spend years in jail is just misjustice.

So there is transparency, that I understand. And then there's leaked information. I think trumpster has been much more transparent than both pedojoe and obomber, which gives all the TDP folks lots of fodder.

Is Pete a micromanager? Maybe. Does he trust the MSM? I wouldn't at all. And they've proven they hate trumpster and anyone that works for him. They've been trying to take him down for awhile and it's always backfired.

Based on woke liars/hyperbolizers here on SS... and our woke who think progressive opinion from podcasts is fact, I've begun not to believe these threads until I can verify from a trustworthy source.

I found it from The Hill.

    *****

There are many reasons that pb ain't MAGA. The one that comes up most often is that Trump and MAGA are waaaaaaaaaay too Big Brother for me.

This Pentagon thing, now that I understand it, is that issue.

    *****

Relatedly, I aks po repeatedly, why the extreme hate toward Trump and MAGA. Trump is moderate on social issues and he's what's traditionally Dem on others, e.g., tariffs. Yet, po is typical of many and hates MAGA like Nazis hate Jews and the KKK hates n!gg€r$.

I'm beginning to think that it's a Big Brother thing. po's a Big Brother lover and Trump has redirected Big Brother. po's Big Brother foisted the TQ agenda on helpless citizens and Trump's Big Brother, as an example, keeps people toting Y chromosomes out of women's private spaces.

No. They are trying, in incremental steps, to control the press and the media. Controlling the press and media are prime aspects of a fascist system and amongst the first steps that a fascist regime attempts.

You're not really following along with all this very well, are you, od.

Obviously, Pete Hegseth wants to avoid another signalgate. Pete Hegseth, JD Vance, and other nincompoops included Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of the Atlantic on a group chat about an imminent military operations against the Houthis in Yemen code-named Operation Rough Rider.

Yeah, I've found most libs to be big brother lovers. That's their roots showing like a bad dye job that's too old. The big federal government controlling everyone's life because the individual is too stupid to make their own decisions. Which includes how often you can make individual decisions. Zero control of the state and local governments because big brother's "one size fits all" is the best for "everyone." And of course, only their ideas and desires are part of the plan. The feds knowing what every school is teaching in every grade because it's what the teachers can't veer from. And of course, the lack of free enterprise and private companies are a thing of the past.

    FYSA- "Big Brother= SWAMP

Comical. Hegseth is concerned about leaks when he's the one who invited a reporter into their top secret zoom meeting on some attack we were planning.

The inmates are running the asylum.

What an odd thing to post in a topic thread about Pete Kegsbreath flexing his newly obtained big brother powers 🤭

  18. by HatetheSwamp on October 16, 2025 1:49 pm

The context of the Big Brother comment is pb saying he's not MAGA because MAGA loves Big Brother... and, the reason po and others hate Trump and MAGA so much is because y'nes used to have a monopoly on Big Brother and now you have to fight for him.

  19. by Donna on October 16, 2025 1:58 pm

Even Fox News objects to Kegsbreath's decree.

Media outlets, including Fox News and CNN, refuse to sign Pentagon’s press access rules

The Pentagon is telling beat reporters to sign restrictive new rules by Tuesday or surrender their press passes by Wednesday. Virtually every news outlet is rejecting the ultimatum and saying they will not sign.

The Pentagon Press Association, a body that represents the beat reporters, says the new policy championed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “gags Pentagon employees and threatens retaliation against reporters who seek out information that has not been pre-approved for release.”

In a statement on Monday, the association said that “potential expulsion from the Pentagon should be a concern to all.”

Last month, Hegseth’s press office outlined new rules requiring beat reporters to sign a pledge not to obtain or use unauthorized material, even if the information is unclassified. Any journalist who doesn’t sign the pledge, Hegseth said, risks losing physical access to the Pentagon — something that has been a standard part of Washington-area news coverage for decades.

ABC News, CBS News, CNN, NBC News and Fox News (where Hegseth was an on-air host for a decade) issued a joint statement on Tuesday afternoon condemning the new rules and refusing to sign the paperwork.

“Today, we join virtually every other news organization in declining to agree to the Pentagon’s new requirements, which would restrict journalists’ ability to keep the nation and the world informed of important national security issues,” the statement read. “The policy is without precedent and threatens core journalistic protections. We will continue to cover the U.S. military as each of our organizations has done for many decades, upholding the principles of a free and independent press.”

Beyond the big cable and broadcast networks, Reuters, The Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic and NPR have all said that journalists from their newsrooms will not sign on to the Pentagon’s restrictions.

    AI Overview:

Reports in March and April 2025 revealed that then-Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth caused significant security breaches by using the messaging app Signal on his personal phone and an unsecured computer line to discuss classified military information. The incidents, nicknamed "Signalgate," involved the sharing of details about U.S. airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

    Details of the breach
Two Signal chats: Hegseth is reported to have disclosed sensitive information in two separate Signal group chats on March 15, 2025.

    • One chat, created by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, accidentally included Atlantic magazine editor Jeffrey Goldberg.

    • Hegseth created the second chat himself, which included his wife, brother, and personal lawyer, none of whom had a security clearance.

Information shared: In these chats, Hegseth shared operational details about the military strikes, including launch times for aircraft and bomb drop times, information which multiple former officials stated was classified and could have endangered pilots.

Origin of the information: Hegseth reportedly pulled this highly sensitive information directly from a secure military communications channel for sharing on the unsecured app.

Installation of unsecured line: After the initial incident, it was reported in late April 2025 that Hegseth had installed a separate, unsecured internet line in his Pentagon office. This was done to bypass security protocols and use Signal on his personal computer in a secure area where personal phones are not allowed.

Personal phone vulnerability: Security experts noted that Hegseth's use of his personal phone—with its easily discoverable phone number and reportedly reused passwords—made his communications particularly vulnerable to hacking by foreign adversaries.

"the reason po and others hate Trump and MAGA so much is because y'nes used to have a monopoly on Big Brother and now you have to fight for him." -pedophile's bitch

What "Big Brother" did we have a monopoly on and have to fight for now? Are you talking about Social Security...? Medicare...? Medicaid...? We didn't have any monopoly on any of that. It's all everyone's.

Seriously, I have no idea why you MAGA Hats are so happy with the idea of being rid of these things. But we'll be fighting just as hard so that y'all won't lose those things too you know.

conchita- I'm amazed that you would actually think this was an issue after you defended cliton and her use of her private phone for actual TS messaging and intermixing classified and personal emails. And then of course the release of TS emails that threatened the lives of GB royalty. and then there was her server kept at her house in the bathroom. Which wasn't a secure house and it wasn't a cleared computer to have classified in. And it held 44,000 emails.

  23. by Indy! on October 16, 2025 4:08 pm

Ahhh... the old whataboutism dodge that never works because...

First off, Hillary was not SecDef - she was a one term Senator writing laws about Flowers of the Month

Secondly, I never once defended her over the email thing.

So now you can go back to explaining how stupid Hegseth was for revealing military secrets that could have easily got some of your welfare buddies killed.
