Notable uses of the Insurrection Act
1861: The Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln invoked the Act at the start of the Civil War to call up militia to suppress the rebellion of seceding states.
1870s: Reconstruction. President Ulysses S. Grant used the Act multiple times to combat Ku Klux Klan violence in the South.
Late 19th and early 20th century: Labor Disputes.
Several presidents, including Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson, deployed troops to intervene in major labor strikes, such as the Pullman Strike in 1894 and the Colorado Coalfield War in 1914.
1950s and 1960s: Civil Rights Movement. The Act was invoked to enforce federal desegregation orders against the wishes of state governors.
1957: President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock, Arkansas, to enforce the desegregation of Central High School.
1962–1963: President John F. Kennedy used the Act to enforce desegregation at the University of Mississippi and the University of Alabama.
1965: President Lyndon B. Johnson federalized the Alabama National Guard to protect civil rights activists marching from Selma to Montgomery.
1967–1968: Civil Unrest. President Johnson deployed federal troops to Detroit in 1967 and to Washington D.C., Baltimore, and Chicago in 1968 to quell riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
1992: Los Angeles Riots. President George H. W. Bush invoked the Act at the request of California's governor to send troops to restore order during the riots sparked by the Rodney King verdict."
