Great concept. I really liked it when it first came out in 1970. It made a lot of really great points about racial inequality in this country.

A film that I think is absolutely ripe for a modern remake. Set today.

Except the main character, a rich, flaming white supremacist MAGA Hat, wakes up to find that he's become Hispanic. And as a kicker, he can only speak Spanish. He can't understand a word of English and he can't get anyone to believe him.

Imagine all the hilarious ensuing consequences that one could easily imagine in such a scenario set in Trump's America.

Maybe call it, "The Tortilla Man".

Saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid. One of those double feature deals where the second movie that's usually just a tack-on to sell extra tickets ends up being better than the feature. I forget what the feature movie was, but I believe it starred Sidney Portier. Watermelon Man was the "throwaway" second movie.

Maybe Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, or maybe To Sir, With Love...?

Our old SelectSmart pal Sean Shealy saw my Facebook post on this and we're talking a screenplay collaboration already here. I think this thing could almost write itself!

Street Scene, daytime. Our Protagonist is screaming Spanish at a group of a half dozen unmarked Ice Agents who have surrounded him.

AGENT #1 (who can speak Spanish): "He says... he says he's really a white man! He says he has three houses... five cars... and a fifty-foot sailboat...! And a five-million-dollar private jet! ...He belongs to the Hilton Bay Yacht Club, a member inj good standing yet! Oh this is nice... He says he could buy and sell us all twenty times over... Hey WOW! He says he'll pay us each three times the signing bonuses we got if we let him go..."

AGENT #2: "Tase his crazy beaner ass..."

There's also a (pretty bad) Twilight Zone episode like that - basically the inverse of WM (iow not a comedy).

I think the other movie might have been "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs" - the (pretty bad) sequel to the classic "In The Heat of the Night". BTW, speaking of tack-on second run movies - saw one of my favorite movies of all time as a tack-on to the absolutely horrible "Killer Elite" at a drive-in. My stepfather was a huge James Caan fan back in the day, so we went to see Killer Elite which we all hated - even my dad. The second movie was R-rated so the parents wanted to leave, but we begged them to let us stay for the second feature - Vanishing Point - and we did. Greatest car chase movie ever imho. I have it on blu-ray and still watch it about once a year or so. It has the U.S. release on one side and the European release on the other side. The Euro version has a scene with Charlotte Rampling which totally changes the flavor of the entire movie. I don't know if I've ever mentioned this, but one of Indy's all time movie rules is...

If a movie has Charlotte Rampling in it - it's gonna get weird, so... WATCH IT!!

Same goes for Tilda Swinton, btw - she's basically the new Charlotte Rampling.

You have seen Stardust Memories by any chance? She was perfect in that.

And yeah, that movie got weird.

This was the scene where Woody's character recalled his last visit with her at the mental institution...

She has a pretty key role in many of my favorite all time movies...

Never heard of that one! Wow. It's on my List!

  8. by Indy! on August 29, 2025 7:36 am

Yes. I think it's based on some French graphic novel. The sfx look a little dated now, but it's as weird as all get out and well worth a watch (or two 🙂). Charlotte also has a key role in Zardoz if you want to reach way back into 1960s weirdness.

    And there's this...

LOVED her in Zardoz! I've always loved that movie.

Rick and Morty paid homage to it once...

I have that one blu-ray too.

Indy!, I tried to watch a version of Immortal I found on Youtube, but it was ashit copy. Like a copy of a defunct format refilmed off a faulty monitor. I couldn't find a legitimate rentable version anywhere I looked.

I desperately need to see what I got only a vague idea of from watching seven minutes of it essentially through an empty coke bottle.

Can ya help a fellow film junkie out...?

  12. by Indy! on August 30, 2025 10:31 am

No problem. Forgot where I saw it originally - probably Netflix buried under all their crappy selections. So it might be available on one of the streaming services. But when 3D became a thing again, I found out there was a 3D version of it - so I tracked a copy down on... where else? Ebay. So if you still have a DVD player - check the link below or search for better (cheaper) options...

BTW, the 3D version was the crappy post-production 3D and there's no way to turn off the German subtitles on it - so I always watch the 2D version (minus subtitles) that's also on the disc. 🙂

Thanks! I wouldn't be surprised if it was that baloney 3D version I tried to watch.

  14. by Indy! on August 30, 2025 11:21 am

Yeah, I gave up watching those youtube movies because they're always low rent copies.

  15. by Ponderer on August 30, 2025 5:30 pm

    Found it.

Yeah, pretty freaky. The art direction was incredible! I really liked it. Kind of a meh ending though.

Definitely flawed (what movie isn't these days?) Got better with more watches for me.
