This is a(nother) mea culpa to donna. She asked me to cite where Mamdani spoke about the elimination of the Jews.
So I was going through my reading list today and saw several articles on him and this was in there. So the synapse fired and I thought "crap!" Anyway donna. I was remiss.
BACKGROUND: The word “intifada” has been used to describe Palestinian uprisings against Israel, beginning in 1987. The phrase “globalize the intifada” has drawn criticism because of fears among Jewish people that it shows support for the use of targeted violence against Jews around the world. On college campuses and city streets, the word intifada has become central to pro-Palestinian protests. Signs proclaim, “globalize the intifada” and demonstrators often chant “one solution: intifada, revolution” or “long live the intifada” as they march. I think it's a much clearer and open call for violence against Jews, than trumpster's J6 call. Recently in Congress, Rep. Elise Stefanik framed it as a call for Jewish genocide.
So as of today, I have a twofer. New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani on Sunday again declined to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada” but emphasized he would be a mayor “that protects Jewish New Yorkers” if elected in November. “That’s not language that I use,” Mamdani told NBC’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press.” “The language that I use and the language that I will continue to use to lead this city is that which speaks clearly to my intent, which is an intent grounded in a belief in universal human rights. So to me, he just doubled down on his speak.
So that's just about it on the double-talk scene. Other than that, he refused to take it back or apologize for the statement, which again, to the Jewish population, is a dog whistle for selected targeting of harassment and violence. To me, it's no better than calling for targeted attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. Both are equally disgusting.
