Just the other morning I was expressing my skepticism about carbon offsets. I opined that the program, like income tax, had a high potential for abuse. Businesses, like income taxpayers generally, are prone to exaggerate and under-report when it serves their purposes. That is human nature.
Even when people operate within the carbon offsets program legitimately with the best of intentions, things can go wrong as the New York Times reported this past August:
Wildfires are ravaging forests set aside to soak up greenhouse gases.
The wildfires in the American West are burning vast expanses of specially protected forests — those that are part of carbon-offset projects meant to counterbalance the carbon dioxide pollution being pumped into the atmosphere by human activity.
