Massive protests are scheduled to hit the streets and community in the US nationwide on June 14 in what organizers expect will be the largest single-day anti-President Trump rally since the start of the administration. This is the latest anti-Trump protest organized amid his second term. The widespread movement will run counter to Trump's multimillion dollar military parade in D.C.
Here are ten things you need to know about 'No Kings' protest on June 14th:
• The "No Kings" protests are a "nationwide day of defiance" to "reject authoritarianism," according to the event's organizers. Dozens of grassroots groups are organizing the nationwide protests. [There are over 1,500 events planned so far in cities all over the country]
• Anti-Trump protests are being organized in the US on June 14th and more than 100 pro-democracy advocacy groups are partnering to organize the No Kings events, reports Axios.
• "No Kings is a nationwide day of defiance," organizers wrote. "From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we're taking action to reject authoritarianism."
• Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible, one of those groups, told Newsweek that the goal of the protest is to send a message that the United States "has no kings" amid Trump's military parade in the nation's capital, which coincides with the president's 79th birthday.
• "This is actually to send a strong message to leaders and institutions who are considering right now whether to capitulate or whether to fight back, and to send a message that this period we are in right now, this period of authoritarian breakthrough, is temporary. And democracy will reassert itself," Levin said.
• There are hundreds of "No Kings" protests [Again, over 1,500 so far] scheduled for June 14 in every single state, from Florida to Alaska, and even a few planned for outside the U.S. There is, however, one major city where protesters won't be gathering as part of the movement: Washington, D.C., itself.
• "Donald Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday," the No Kings website said. "A spectacle meant to look like strength. But real power isn't staged in Washington. It rises up everywhere else."
• Millions of people are estimated to protest in more than 1,500 cities across all 50 states and commonwealths, organizers said. There have been many other protests organized by groups like Indivisible and 50501 since then, including on Memorial Day weekend, "Hands Off" protests in April and May Day demonstrations last month.
• Trump proposed a military parade on his 79th birthday and the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary. The Army predicts it will spend $25 to $45 million on the plan, an estimate that doesn't include Secret Service or law enforcement.
• "No Kings on Presidents Day" protests were held across the country on February 17 with a focus on demonstrating against Trump, Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency task force.
So who all's gonna go? We're gonna be there with bells on.
