White House stands by tax bill after Musk calls it a 'disgusting abomination'

Musk and some Republicans oppose the bill’s spending levels as Trump pushes for wide support
By Alec Schemmel Fox News

The White House defended the President Donald Trump-endorsed "big, beautiful bill" Tuesday after outgoing DOGE chief Elon Musk doubled down on his criticism, calling the legislation a "disgusting abomination."

Musk, who has been openly critical of the proposed reconciliation bill, said Tuesday afternoon that he "just can't stand it anymore."

"This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination," Musk added in a Tuesday afternoon post on X. "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it."

The bill passed the House in late May, ahead of Memorial Day, largely along party lines. However, two Republicans did vote against the measure, citing insufficient spending cuts and a rising national debt. GOP Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has also signaled he likely will not vote in favor of the bill in its current form, citing a debt ceiling increase that is a red line for him.

Some GOP senators will grouse about the debt ceiling, fiscal responsibility, etc., but they will all dutifully fall in line and pass the "disgusting abomination".

Agree. Susan Collins will do her usual fake "moderate" act and sign it with glee.

Because your title was obscure, Indy, I missed this until after I posted my own.

    Curt,

What, IYO, makes the Big Beautiful Bill a "disgusting abomination?"

My fear is that the bill will pass because it's a middle ground between what may preserve Western culture for future generations and your years to jack up debt on steroids.

I'm with Elon and the libertarian-ish GOPs and libertarians.

    HtS,
What I find to be a disgusting abomination probably does not coincide with what Elon Musk considers a disgusting abomination. I particularly don't like portions of the bill that are leading us toward an autocracy by diminishing the powers of the courts.

Trump's sweeping tax-cut bill includes provision to weaken court powers
WILMINGTON, Delaware, May 30 (Reuters) - The sweeping tax-and-spending bill that would enact President Donald Trump's policy agenda includes a provision that critics said would weaken the power of U.S. judges to enforce contempt when the government defies court orders.

The one-sentence provision in the 1,100-page bill prevents federal courts, including the Supreme Court, from enforcing contempt orders unless the plaintiffs have posted a monetary bond, which rarely happens in cases against the government.

Curt- I'll agree with that. And I think there's money congress needed to spend that musk thought was a waste of money. Earlier, musk made the remark about how disgusting and imbedded the swamp really is and how it protects it's own across agency lines.

po tried to play that card, too, not so long ago.

My response to po was that:

    1. Your report strikes me as TDS malarkey, but,
    2. If it's true, it's unconstitutional and won't last past the first challenge in court.

This is why I love our Constitutional Republic... three equal branches of government.

I just posted highlights on an article dealing with the CBO report that the Big Beautiful Bill will raise the deficit by close to $3,000,000,000,000 in ten years. My guess is that's chump change for a progressive such as yourself.

    HtS,
Then say I don't like that the bill contains possibly unconstitutional elements which may be decided by a conservative Supreme Court.

  8. by HatetheSwamp on June 4, 2025 9:23 am

    Curt,

This Court protects the Separation of Powers more strenuously than any Dem-dominated Court ever has. If that's your concern, a "conservative" Court is your best friend.

    HtS,
Not all budget deficits are created equal. Some government spending, like maintaining and repairing bridges before they collapse, saves money and possibly lives. Similarly, curing diseases abroad that potentially could cross borders into America is a good investment. There are other preventative measures that save money in the long run.

Giving tax breaks to billionaires does not have a societal benefit.

  10. by HatetheSwamp on June 4, 2025 9:38 am

Agreed. So, we need to trim less essential spending items... or, carefully consider privatization of some items in the budget.

One of the evils of the Swamp is that Dems, today, are choosing to do nuthin but say, uhuh. This is their chance to propose creative initiatives and to fight to win the hearts and minds of voters... IMO.

Privatization costs more and is less efficient. Proven over time without any doubt. And as I've said many times - we're not going to find $37 Trillion by cutting nickel and dime programs.

    Universal healthcare

Cut the military down to a reasonable size

    Tax the wealthy

That is the ONLY way to bring the debt/deficit back under control. THE ONLY WAY. So when two bit con men like the orange shitstain suggest something else? You know they are just more swampers like your Tangerine Tyrant master.
