The link to the edit function is more obvious as the button now says "Write & edit __________ articles" above. Hopefully this will help people to edit their old articles.

Also new is a feature and a button below the masthead in the left column. "Top Contributors" opens a list of familiar names with links to lists of their most recent articles along with the number of visits, comments, etc.

Errr ... why would we want to edit our own articles? I mean, yes, thats nice, but speaking for myself I just want to be able edit my posts, so I can fix a dumb typo after I hit submit. And, as Indy suggested, put a time limit on it so people cant change their story to save face after they've been called out.

  3. by Curt_Anderson on June 1, 2025 1:08 pm
    Navy,
Because you may want to edit a dumb typo in your article. Or add a link. Or add an update with newly known facts, etc. As I remarked previously, I want to place an emphasis on the originators of articles. Also somebody recently said they had difficulty in knowing how/where to edit their old articles.

I want to encourage the creation of more articles (which are usually our personal takes on and cherry-picked news reports on current events) by subtly discourage long lists of comments which are often too much to wade through.

For example, if there is an article about Trump pardoning crooks, rather than comments responding with whataboutism, those so inclined might post an article about other politicians' newly revealed corruption. This is not unlike newspapers and other publications that have opinion pieces from both sides of the political fence.

    Thanks, Curt!

I mean this with no malice: Mmmm ... good luck with that. That generally isnt how discussion forums work, and it's a lot to expect from ... *gestures vaguely at all of us"

I dont think you can pick and choose which kind of participation-related improvements you'll get here. If you want any improvements, the social media companies have already hammered out how to do that.

  6. by Indy! on June 1, 2025 2:22 pm

The option to edit your posts is actually useful, Navy. For one thing, you can fix any of the html issues. I don't use html anywhere except here so typing out the tags I often screw them up somehow. Pondy was kind enough to write out the full instructions to make changes to OPs for me and I have actually used those tips 3 or 4 times to fix my mistakes.

  7. by Curt_Anderson on June 1, 2025 2:29 pm
    Navy,
There is one thing that I believe distinguishes these pages from the social media sites with which I am familiar. Namely there is a divergence of opinions here. Social media sites seem to encourage corners of political sameness.

Also the posts, including comments, seem to be lengthier here than I've seen elsewhere. And that's without any ability to edit comments.

  8. by Navy2711 on June 1, 2025 2:52 pm
Indy, yes, Im asking why be able edit your articles but not your comments?

Curt, honestly no idea what you're talking about. That's a truly bonkers thing to say, unless you've never been on social media. You've got 8 particpants here who are 90% like-minded, and two crazy people. Facebook groups can have between 10 and thousands of people, discussing everything from Nietzsche to Justin Bieber. And ... have you SEEN Twitter?

  9. by Indy! on June 1, 2025 2:58 pm

Don't get me wrong, Navy - I agree with you on that one. I'm at the age where my fingers sometimes have a mind of their own. For example, almost everytime I use the word "they" - I leave off the y for some reason. So I'd love to have the timer edit option.

  10. by Curt_Anderson on June 1, 2025 3:19 pm
    Navy,
Of course I haven't seen ALL of social media, but when I have peeked at various pages on X or Facebook, like the Bernie Sanders, Charlie Kirk, College Democrats or Young Republicans pages for example, they seem to be preaching to their respective choirs.

Also, as I opined earlier social media responses tend to be quips or a few emojis rather than lengthy responses. At least that's what I've seen.

  11. by Curt_Anderson on June 1, 2025 3:27 pm
    Indy,
Apparently I am of the age where I don't even notice your Y-less "theys". I mentally autocorrect them as I am reading. You have posted follow-up corrections and it sometimes takes me a while to find your error.

I read a study several years that indicated that in written piece as long as the first and last letters of a word are correct, the letters can be scrambled on the inside and readers will have little to no problem deciphering the word.

  12. by Indy! on June 1, 2025 8:09 pm

Figure out a way for that to work with HTML too and we're good.

  13. by Curt_Anderson on June 1, 2025 8:16 pm
    Indy asked in another thread:

"You can post videos in the body of a post - why not photos?"

YouTube videos have standard width about 450 pixels wide, which fit nicely into posts. Photo images can 2500 or more pixels wide. You know how to post videos because I posted instructions. You could post photos in a similar fashion, but the learning curve is steeper and I suspect that I'd be spending time fixing broken images and fixing images that mess up the formatting.

I may try allowing larger images within the posts than I do currently. To be clear, I don't care what size the original image is after you click it.

  14. by Curt_Anderson on June 1, 2025 8:41 pm
    Indy,
I've seen forums that instead of showing a thumbnail image as I do, they show a button that says "Show Image", "Show GIF" or the like and the image opens when clicked.

Forums rarely host images directly due to storage and bandwidth limitations. Instead, users upload images to third-party image hosting services. Below is a forum for gamers that allows the posting of images, but just reading the how-to instructions is a multi-step hassle. I don't think many actually bother to do it.

I am experimenting with allowing image #1 in articles and the sole image in comments to appear larger, like Homer here...

Somebody suggested that I forgot the halcyon days of the old forum. What I remember is having to scramble to remove or resize way-too-wide photos that people posted with messed up the forum format.

I also used to get way more forum spam to clean up.

Curt, just go into the admin control panel. From there, go to ...

Posting → Attachments → Attachment settings

    You can specify:

    Max image width
    Max image height
    Max file size
Choose if images must be linked or if they can be posted inline
Turn them off for specific (ab)users

My bad, I forgot you're not using a simple, free, turnkey, easily modified, easily administered package like phpBB, MyBB, or SimpleMachines. Disregard this post.

  17. by Curt_Anderson on June 2, 2025 11:07 pm
    Navy,
What you probably don't consider is that I want all the features on SelectSmart.com to be integrated. People (me for example) should be able to post a comment here or make a selector using the same login name. As the administrator, I want single and unified admin function.

The turnkey packages you mention don't do that. They would be separate systems. Even if any could handle this forum, the selectors, the flowcharts, the ratings, etc., they wouldn't be able work with the 20,000 selectors that people have already made.

  18. by Navy2711 on June 3, 2025 12:25 am

"The turnkey packages you mention don't do that."

They do. It's called Single Sign-On. You use a plugin that replaces phpBB's authorization code.

When a user tries to access the message board, phpBB retrieves their session information from a cookie that the main site placed on their browser.** It uses this to retrieve their user information from the main site's user database. It then creates a new account in phpBB, if there wasn't one before, and then logs them in to phpBB.

** If that session doesn't exist, because the user tried to surf directly to phpBB without having first logged onto the main site, the plugin directs them to the main site login creation page.

TLDR: The main site and phpBB exist side by side. When someone goes to phpBB, it logs them on using the main sites login info. To the user this is seamless, and they only ever have to create one login/password.

"navy" is just a little bitch. make the troll go away.

  20. by Navy2711 on June 3, 2025 6:34 pm

In light of OD's delicately phrased remark, let me again state that I am not criticizing Curt, beyond some playful jabs at his homemade website, which was probably coded in Fortran, using his DARPA mainframe account, circa 1963, that could easily be replaced with a free, turnkey solution that would give everyone the features that they want and probably be a lot less headache to Curt, in which case everyone would be happier, and we'd probably achieve world peace along the way.

It's Curt's site. He can do what he wants.

  21. by Indy! on June 3, 2025 6:43 pm

That's the way I feel about it as well - it's Curt's board and his life. If he wants to spend his valuable (and quickly eroding) free time coding things that don't need to be coded - that's up to him. I'll even salute him for putting up with the pain and headaches involved and hope it doesn't give him a heart attack or something with all the unnecessary frustration it must create for him along the way. But it still would be nice to be able to just hit a button that says "Upload photo" and dig up the pic from my hard drive to attach directly to the post. 🙂

SelectSmart.com is circa 1998, which is ancient in internet terms. It is oldest "selector" site online and the first to allow visitors the ability to create their own selectors. I have had many imitators, some who have come and gone.

"I have had many imitators, some who have come and gone"

I tried to make a Selectsmart.com clone once. Then my abacus broke. :)

Curt, while we're at it, I would love for the posting form — the thing I'm typing in right now — to open up directly below all the other comments on the page, instead of going to a new page. That way, I can scroll up and review the words of the person I'm replying to.

Well I guess there is something to be said for looking your age. 😌
