In a strange move, the Senate quickly and unanimously passed the "No Tax on Tips Act" on Tuesday, giving its official stamp of approval to an idea that has gained traction since trumpster campaigned on it in 2024.To be fair, Cruz and TWO dems (Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto) were sponsors of the bill. That shows me the moderate dems are willing to actually work for their constituents. This is the way a Republic is supposed to work.

I do want to say, that without the dems supporting this, it could not happen the way it did. In this case, everyone put down their bullshit and just got something done for the working class.

The legislation would create a new tax deduction worth up to $25,000 for tips, limited to cash tips that that workers report to employers for withholding purposes on payroll taxes.

The tax break is also restricted to employees who earn earn $160,000 or less in 2025, an amount that will rise with inflation in upcoming years.

This is a huge boom for the service industry, who routinely work at sub-minimum wages when employers "assume" a 15-20% tip on "everything ordered." With both of us having worked in the service industry, my wife and I "overtip" in cash anyway, leaving the person the ability to claim (or not) the tip. So now more than ever, I encourage over-tipping for those that can, and let these folks take home more.

Now, we'll see what the house does. That's a crapshoot.

Do you remember Cackles Mckneepads campaigning on that promise shortly after Trump announced it... as if it was her idea!!!!!?

I despise Trump. But, we are sooooooo lucky that Kammy and the Dems were blown out in a landslide.

That's the huge issue. We'd still be floundering with someone that didn't know what they were doing, and it's "assistant" that loves to see and smell the country burn down.

Even in this chaos, at least things are getting done. And the dims aren't used to trying to keep up with a president. Or even him answering questions or appearing and talking to people. Even "campaigning" kammy wouldn't answer question. Everything was canned. And "off the cuff?" was nothing more than a word salad that just showed she couldn't hold a thought that was part of her platform. Something she should have at least studied.

Well first off - congrats to our worthless Congress doing something together for once. However, at best it's a meager bone that won't make much - if any - difference at all. As usual, OD - having never worked a real job in his life - doesn't understand what just happened there. The key paragraph...

The legislation would create a new tax deduction worth up to $25,000 for tips, limited to cash tips that that workers report to employers for withholding purposes on payroll taxes.

This makes the bill virtually meaningless. Let Indy - as always - explain it for the two MAGAts...

    1) There's a limit on the tax break - $25K. Minor issue for most low-level workers, but it's going to hit hard on those who work mainly for tips and those in high profile jobs like maitre des at posh restaurants and doormen at large condos or apartments.

    2) A big one... "limited to cash tips". Most people are now paying everything with a credit card of some sort. Personally, I quit carrying cash over a year ago because there's no reason to carry it anymore. The younger people? The don't want anything to do with handling money. Tips are now added electronically and reported however the business reports it on their income taxes.

    3) The HUGE asterisk on the cash tips... "cash tips that that workers report to employers for withholding purposes on payroll taxes." First off - not proper use of BOLD text as always on an Indy post. Secondly this virtually destroys the tax break altogether. Why? Because the entire advantage of cash tips is workers do not have to report them to employers. I worked for tips many times in my life before college - I never once reported those tips on my income tax.

It's a good idea - no tax on tips. It's so popular with "both" (🙄) parties that they had to do something about it. So what did they do? They made sure the law is so bad it's basically just away to claim they did something about it to shut people up.

Bottom line... anytime you two need help with a business issue or politics? Indy is right here to explain it to you.

That was just full of shit. $25K for an hourly worker is actually worth something. If you weren't an elitist prick, you would understand that. I think you just actually hate someone getting something you don't "qualify" for. Grow the fuck up. People who actually work for a living will appreciate this. But you don't give two shits about those "little brown people."

  5. by Indy! on May 22, 2025 7:36 am

Good lord. I said $25K WAS good money for low level workers YOU FUCKING IDIOT. Have one of those kids you’re molesting read it to you again only SLOWER this time so maybe you’ll get it this time.

    Fucking jackass. 😂

Secondly this virtually destroys the tax break altogether. Why? Because the entire advantage of cash tips is workers do not have to report them to employers.

Had you actually done any real work in your life, you'd know the IRS "assumes" tips if they're reported or not. Employees must report tips to the employer by the 10th of the month following the month the tips were received.

Waiters and waitresses under report their tips by 84 percent, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The high prevalence of tax fraud in the service industry makes waitresses a big target for IRS auditing. Thus, reporting only the actual amount of tips received and adequate record-keeping can prevent penalties from the IRS.

We do carry cash. Most of the ma and pa places, and some of the regional restaurants will charge you what the card company charges them instead of eating the costs.

First off, OD - I guarnatee I've worked for tips more times than you.

Secondly, this is - again - where your lack of real world experience fails you when it comes to anything dealing with employment and money. The LAST thing people working for tips worry about is the IRS auditing them. And if the IRS actually ever gets around to auditing the employers and making them pay more in taxes based on what they THINK the employees of that restaurant make in tips - the restaurant has to deal with it. If it then - by some miracle - actually trickles down to the employees and they have to take a pay cut from the tips the restaurant is receiving on their credit card receipts to pay the IRS? The employees then can make the choice - am I still willing to work for this lower wage? Or should I move to another restaurant for better tips? In the end - there are so many hoops that need to be jumped thru by the IRS, the restaurant and the employee - it has no effect whatsoever on actual workers and pay in 99.9% of the cases. I never once claimed my tips - and I never once had to pay taxes on my tips.

So far as the 3 or 4% some (very few) restaurants add to a bill for a credit card payment? The simple answer is if it bothers you that much? Take it off the tip. OTOH, not carrying money means I never have to worry about having it - meaning going to a bank to get some. Nor do I have to worry about losing it, or getting robbed or having the correct change for whatever purchase I'm trying to make. It's also dirty from being handled a million times by who knows who and could have dangerous drugs or chemicals on it from wherever in the world it's been at any given time. In the end? I've found NO cash works better than dealing with cash.

It's awfully nice that you can speak for an entire group with exactly ZERO knowledge of the subject.🤣 The FACT is that you were flat WRONG about the subject you chided me about. And it's a basic that anyone that's waited tables, or worked in any service industry needs to know. Now, you're just trying to squirm out of it showing (yet again) you can't find your ass with either hand. Talk about being a whiny little bitch!🙄

  9. by Curt_Anderson on May 22, 2025 11:00 am
We should be able to deduct tips as a business expense since we are supplementing the wages that tip workers make.

The federal minimum wage for tipped employees, as set by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), is $2.13 per hour. However, employers must ensure that an employee's combined wages (including tips) and cash wage meet or exceed the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

  10. by HatetheSwamp on May 22, 2025 12:19 pm

If we had a flat tax with, say, the first $75,000 or so exempt, you wouldn't have to fret over deductions.

  11. by Indy! on May 22, 2025 12:47 pm

Curt - you CAN deduct tips as a business expense (especially if you have a credit card receipt reflecting the amount you tipped). How? Classify your meals as business expenses. It's perfectly legal as long as you discuss business while eating - such as asking your wife for new tips on how to improve the website traffic here.

OD - as always - just spews a bunch of meaningless words when he realizes he is so far out of his element in the conversation there is no way home except angry lashing out at whoever bested him in any particular conversation. The bottom line here, Queenie - is you only know what you google. You have no idea how things actually work in the real world because you lived in the military world where nothing is real - it's just made up shit to fleece the American taxpayer so you get a welfare check.

Oh - and Brown Shorts? Flat taxers are idiots.

  13. by meagain on May 23, 2025 12:14 pm
Flat taxes are inherently unfair. No matter the deduction, they always benefit the highest earners and the wealthy.

  14. by Indy! on May 23, 2025 12:16 pm

Anytime someone like Steve Forbes is pimping an idea - you know it only benefits the wealthy.
