President Trump is telling some of the nation’s largest companies that they should eat the cost of his tariffs, as a growing number of businesses signal that they must raise prices to blunt the impact of a persistent global trade war.

As a result, the man who ran for the presidency by boasting about his business acumen is now openly sparring with corporate America, seeking to dictate how Walmart, Mattel, and other retailers and manufacturers respond to some of the highest levies seen in decades.

I would have spoken with the CEOs/CFOs of these companies already (like on Nov 30th? to start preparing for this to look like the "good guy" to the customers. You can tell this dik'ead that you'll destroy the Russian economy through the Chinese bank (because you've already sent an electronic "message" that you can). I know those never occurred to you. You don't have any stomach to play big boy games. You're not prepped for it. If you play, you'll get dead.

So, you're comparing trumpster to Xi Jinping. Has he picked out a "religion" to be "selected" to donate organs, alive? Has he murdered opponents in the house and senate? Has he declared himself "president for life?" I just ask these questions because you are like princess, po, donna, wrongagain. None of you know enough to be scary in politics either domestic or global, have any idea how to prepare any longer than your clit, or any sort of negotiation.

I know you're a huge supporter of the CCP and it's tenacles throughout the US. Them murdering and deleting the existence of Falung Gong for the purposes of organ harvesting, and the human slave trade, which they are very involved with. Just look into any nail salon. They're also human slaves that are forced to be dum dumpsters until they get an STD, then they're killed and thrown into dumpsters and the sea to be shark bait. I know you don't understand this because your world view is a "progressive" WASP that wasn't allowed to see anything "bad" according to your parents. You needed to "pity" the poor, but you NEVER, NEVER interact with them. They're "dirty."

So. For you to say that is at least predictable. You work for Xi Jinping. You love him and his work in the Chinese system to take down the US. You are worse than a little nazi. And what's interesting is that you're the first to die. And your wife because your son will already be put against a wall and murdered because he isn't pure. I know that doesn't affect you any, because you love the drug traffickers more than him. Your wife? not sure. I think there may be a BP increase if the Chinese decide that women in her status should replace the chinese whores. And maybe you should. So put out or be an alive organ doner.

    OD,
Nice rant. But why do you hate America and American businesses?

If Walmart and other business do not raise prices because of tariffs so to look like the "good guy" to the customers, they are screwing their domestic suppliers and American businesses which don't have tariffs on their products.

This is the rationale for tariffs: American businesses cannot compete with cheap foreign goods. So impose tariffs on foreign goods and viola they are more expensive and in line with prices that American businesses need to charge, thereby leveling the playing field.

But you and your ilk favoring a communist centrally planned economy want US retailers to cover the cost of the tariffs to give an advantage to China and the others.

    Explain yourself, comrade.

  4. by HatetheSwamp on May 20, 2025 3:50 am

"This is the rationale for tariffs: American businesses cannot compete with cheap foreign goods."

Wrong. In the US in 025, this is EFFINnot the rationale for tariffs.

Ole pb's been crystal clear that he opposes tariffs but he won't abide TDS lies. I assume that you are lying, Curt, because I'm certain that you are not this stoopid.

And, OD, bang on: "I would have spoken with the CEOs/CFOs of these companies already (like on Nov 30th? to start preparing for this to look like the "good guy" to the customers."

One of pb's criticisms of Mr Tangerine Man is he never does that sort of thing, at least, so it can be observed publicly.

I always voted against Reagan but, dernit, this is something Reagan did well. By this time, Reagan would have requested TV time from the networks, during prime time, and he would have explained in simple terms what he was about to do and why. Before that, he would have called CEOs together and spoken to them face to face and offered time for them to aks questions.

Oh, and Curt, your only source is the NYT. I haven't trusted a word it prints in more than a decade.

  5. by Ponderer on May 20, 2025 4:38 am

Um... Why is Trump telling Walmart to "eat" the tariffs that China is already having to pay?

Oh that's right. He was lying his fuckingass off the entire time about how tariffs work. Or he is too stupid to know that wasn't how it worked. One or the other. And his gullible throng swallowed it whole.

I wonder how long before we start seeing MAGA Hats protesting Walmart for passing Trump's tariffs consumer tax onto them?

  6. by HatetheSwamp on May 20, 2025 4:43 am

    po,

Don't EVER take another break from SS, even for multiple days!

  7. by Ponderer on May 20, 2025 5:04 am

    You're bang-on, Curt.

When you wade through the miasma of his obfuscation, MAGA Hat Hate actually believes that the government should be able to force a company to lose money. To sell their products at a loss.

He's already trying to pass the buck to Walmart so people will focus on them for the higher prices and not him.

Everyone who voted for this flaming asshole is a blithering idiot. There was really no serious, logical reason to vote for this monster. Unless the idea of turning this country into an authoritarian zombie of itself for some reason appealed to you.

"Wrong. In the US in 025, this is EFFINnot the rationale for tariffs." ---HtS

So what do you think is the tariff rationale in 2025? And why this year would the rationale be any different than previous attempts at protectionist policies?

Why are economists wrong when the write:
    Protecting Domestic Industries:
Tariffs aim to shield domestic businesses from foreign competition by making imported goods more costly, thus encouraging consumers to buy locally.

  10. by oldedude on May 20, 2025 9:09 am
curt- If Walmart and other business do not raise prices because of tariffs so to look like the "good guy" to the customers, they are screwing their domestic suppliers and American businesses which don't have tariffs on their products.
Don't get out much, do you. Walmart would eat the profit. So are you now in favour of tariffs? Because that's a pretty radical change. First you whine incessantly about it costing Americans too much for the chinese trash they sell. Now you're whining that if they shouldn't eat the tariffs and the cost to consumers. Pick a side dude.

  13. by Curt_Anderson on May 20, 2025 8:51 pm
    od,
Yes, I noticed after the fact that you posted a minute before me. But I decided the crickets were still appropriate since HtS didn't respond at all and you responded with non sequiturs.

What does "Walmart would eat the profit" mean? What makes you think that I favor tariffs now? My gripe with Trump is that if he is going to impose tariffs, don't penalize American businesses.

I don't recall complaining about Chinese merchandise. I am sure I've bought Chinese goods. I am pretty sure I've posted about how much cheaper stuff is now that we get from Asia than things were in when I was a kid. Even without adjusting for inflation color TVs are cheaper now than in 1960s.

It's counterproductive to have tariffs if consumers don't end paying more for imported goods.

"So what do you think is the tariff rationale in 2025? And why this year would the rationale be any different than previous attempts at protectionist policies?"

    Curt,

And, this is what's so frustrating about being rational about Trump, and even opposing him, in a world with so much deranged TrumpHate going on.

I was arguing against Trump's plan to impose tariffs on a broad scale looooooooong before the 024 election but I was doing based on Trump's actual plan. You're, simply, again, spewing hate rants which miss the point about MAGA.

...and, it's why all of MAGA thinks people like you hate America... which, in practice, apparently, you do.

Your anti-American hate drivel: "This is the rationale for tariffs: American businesses cannot compete with cheap foreign goods."

It's not that American workers aren't able to compete, it's that, since the Marshall Plan, American businesses have faced an unfair imbalance in the tariffs imposed on their products.

What Trump is proposing is not protectionism. It's a war against the protectionism of nearly every nation in the world.

And, Curt, I'm sure you're not really as stoopid about this as you're pretending to be.

  15. by Ponderer on May 21, 2025 9:04 am

I'm sure that MAGA Hat Hate is as stupid as he appears to be.

  22. by Curt_Anderson on May 21, 2025 10:07 am
Ok, I will address you're supposed response to my question about the rationale for tariffs. Your suggestion that Trump is implementing protective tariffs to combat protectionism is an oxymoron.

The current conversation about tariffs centers mostly around China and maybe some other Asian countries. What do they have to do with the Marshall plan which was designed to help European countries post World War II?

    Your entire argument is illogical.

  23. by HatetheSwamp on May 21, 2025 10:09 am

"The current conversation about tariffs centers mostly around China and maybe some other Asian countries."

You are factually wrong. You need to step away from your Holy Trinity.

  24. by Curt_Anderson on May 21, 2025 10:40 am
    HtS,
Trump certainly has made China his central complaint. That's why he hit China with a 145% (later reduced to 30%) tariffs.

  25. by HatetheSwamp on May 21, 2025 10:50 am

    Central?

    How 'bout, one important?

  26. by Curt_Anderson on May 21, 2025 11:17 am
    HtS,
What other country was hit with a 145% or even a 30% tariff? Getting back to the Marshall Plan; the European nations that were beneficiaries of the plan are low on the list of nations importing goods into America. So how is it relevant?

  27. by HatetheSwamp on May 21, 2025 2:09 pm

Right Curt. Curt's addressing the China is more aggressively than any other nation.

    No doubt.

  28. by oldedude on May 21, 2025 11:10 pm
Getting back to the Marshall Plan; the European nations that were beneficiaries of the plan are low on the list of nations importing goods into America. So how is it relevant?

I agree, but he's really wrong because Japan is the leading holder of our debt. THAT makes a difference.

And it's actually good that he sees China as a "threat" which is odd for him. "indy" still doesn't. Again, it's still thinking in the 1930's.

The thing "americans" don't and ugly "americans" will never understand is that different cultures think in "generations." "Americans" think in seconds, minutes. They're instant gratifiers. Most other cultures are not. My "request" is that "amreicans" actually have the ability to think long term. We're having our asses kicked every time we do this. The left especially, doesn't understand long-term goals. They're short-term people. The end of their clit is as long as they consider a question.

Of course, this presents a problem of "my greatgreatgreatgreat... grandfather was offended by you're ...... so I hate you. That's bullshit. And yet, the left will still hold (see above) grandfathers "grandchildren" for the ... grandfather's sins. If you doubt that, read curt's responses to the south and the confederacy. That is a bunch of crap that should have been forgotten two generations ago. The "south" surely has. It's the "north/ Central states you have to worry about. And what about "ashland" OR? They were one of the most racist cities in the US up until past the 1960's. So if we're using leftist ideology, that's correct, and curt is (by definition) a racist.

  29. by HatetheSwamp on May 22, 2025 3:32 am

My point in mentioning the Marshall Plan was that, from that time on, the US adopted a generalized policy that we'd allow ourselves to be taken advantage of for the benefit of struggling nations.

After all these years, Trump is attacking that mindset.
