Candidate Trump made several claims about tariffs, including that foreign countries would bear the cost, manufacturing would return to the U.S., and prices would decrease.
This past week Walmart alerted customers to expect higher prices because of Trump's ongoing trade war. Trump in a social media posts told the Walmart corporation to "'EAT THE TARIFFS,' and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!"
Trump's complaint and demand on Walmart refutes his own promise that China and other foreign countries would bear the cost of the tariffs.
Think about it: if in Trump's MAGA fantasy world Walmart customers did NOT have to pay more for Chinese-made and other foreign-made items at Walmart, what is the incentive to buy the more expensive American-made products? It was the higher store prices that would supposedly return manufacturing to the US.
While I personally hate to see prices go up, it's a good practical lesson in economics for all those who didn't understand that tariffs are a tax on consumers.
