In another thread, pb, who, back in the day, minored, in college, in economics, pointed out that the US existed a century and a quarter before the Feds imposed the first income tax. And, the US thrived. It began that time as a no account union of 13 states. Those years concluded with the USA emerging as world power whose entrance into WW1 settled that war's outcome.

po's contribution to that thread, posted immediately after pb's comment, was, "So... according to Hate, they (GOPs) do in fact have to increase the debt in order to lower it. I'm glad that he's on record declaring it."

No.

For half of US history, we thrived without an income tax.

The point? The nation can raise revenue without taxing income.

The most extreme members of the progressive Swampcult today seem to think that the only way operate as a nation is to tax citizens with high incomes at draconian rates. Think Bernie and "Sandy" Cortez and, on SS, Indy and po, probably Donna and isle, too.

Ole pb merely points out that, factually,
historically, that's just not true. Period.

Governments, through most of history didn't tax income.

For example, from, say, 40 years ago until about the time The ONE entered the Oval Office, GOPs were promoting the idea of a Flat Tax, which is a variation on our income tax, and other outside-the-box means of raising government revenue. In fact, a significant faction of the GOPs who took over DC in Newt Gingrich's Contract with America election advocated forward thinking alternatives to the income tax.

Gang,

It's just the truth that freethinking and open-mindedness live on the political right and among GOP, which is the home of openness and inclusion, acceptance, tolerance, diversity and freethinking.

As po proves, thinking in new ways is sumpthin Dems and progressives can't and don't do in the 21st century.

Wise up.

Is that what passes for intelligent thought and a new idea in Republican circles?

Until the 20th century, the federal government relied on tariffs to generate revenue. A majority of the population were farmers engaged in subsistence farming. The limits of technology and transportation did not allow for much international trade.

  2. by HatetheSwamp on May 19, 2025 8:37 am

    Curt,

So, then, an income tax actually is the only way a government can create revenue?

  3. by Indy! on May 19, 2025 9:07 am

Good lord. And people wonder why this country is circling the drain. Ummm... Brown Shorts? There was also this thing called "slavery" almost up until the income tax was instituted. It basically provided free labor for landowners. Is that the next thing on the MAGAtville wishes for returning to darker times? Or do I even need to ask?

  4. by Ponderer on May 19, 2025 9:17 am

Ah yes. If only we could go back to being what we were in the 1800's.

    🙄

I think that Conservatives should be renamed Regressives.

  5. by HatetheSwamp on May 19, 2025 9:20 am

So, the truth that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves automatically makes an income tax the best way for a government to raise revenue?

I'm sorry but we both know that our SS omniscient, po, has declared me stoopid.

You're going to have to break down your justification of an income tax because of slavery.

I'm not smart enuff to be a member of the woke progressive Swampcult. Be patient.

  6. by Curt_Anderson on May 19, 2025 9:21 am
No, HtS. A graduated income tax is a progressive tax and is a good way to generate revenue. That's in contrast to a regressive flat tax. There are also sales taxes, property taxes, inheritance taxes, fees, licenses, etc. which also disproportionately charge the poor.

  7. by HatetheSwamp on May 19, 2025 9:30 am

    Curt,

What's regressive about the flat taxes that have been proposed?

  8. by Curt_Anderson on May 19, 2025 9:40 am
Seriously, HtS? Look up the terms and definitions. I feel like I am talking with somebody not fluent in English. As I indicated, a flat tax, where everyone pays the same percentage of their income in taxes, is considered regressive because it disproportionately burdens lower-income earners.

Do you want to pay the same taxes or even the same tax rate as Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos?

  9. by HatetheSwamp on May 19, 2025 10:49 am

    Curt,

I'd bow to your wisdom,... if you had any.

And, c'mon. Gimme a break, man! You're usually the one to report, on SS, what a Dem Fox News commentator has said, then pretend that even Fox News holds whatever lib opinion it is.

You have to know that The Five's very own Harold Ford, Jr is encouraging Dems to promote a flat tax in which everyone pays the same tax rate with the first $50,000 of income being tax exempt.

So, if the rate is 40% and po makes 50k, every penny of po's income is tax free. If OD makes 100k, his tax is 20%.

In every flat tax proposal I've ever seen, there's a huuuuuuuuuge "standard deduction" so that, in practice, people don't all pay the same rate of tax.

Are you suggesting that your head is so far up your Holy Trinity's @$$ that this is news to you?

    Say it ain't so, Joe.

"I'm not smart enuff to be a member of the woke progressive Swampcult. "

At least you are honest in your self-assessment.

Curt explained it to you, but you came back for more. A flat tax at any level is regressive because, no matter the exemption, the lower taxable bracket is always a higher rate than the higher income bracket.

And the higher the exemption, the higher the rate needed above that.Which, particularly in the American view, is egregiously unfair on the more successful members of society.

  11. by Curt_Anderson on May 19, 2025 2:50 pm
    HtS,
Alleged Democrat Harold Ford is espousing a conservative regressive tax idea. For the 2024 tax year (filed in 2025), the head of household tax brackets are as follows:
10% on taxable income from $0 to $16,550.
12% on taxable income from $16,551 to $63,100.

In practice, people earning less $50k pay little to no income tax because of various deductions and exemptions. Furthermore, if there was flat tax wealthy tax cheats and tax evaders can hire tax lawyers to help them find all the obscure and suspect tax loopholes. Trump said that he pays little to no taxes means he's smart. Bottom line, the flatter tax the more the poor and middle class carry the tax burden.

Absolutely the most efficient way it’s through payroll taxes for most people

I’d like to see an additional tax on junk food and sugar drinks

  13. by Indy! on May 19, 2025 5:40 pm

Harold Ford is a Republican who's willing to support anything that will earn him a buck. That's why he was booted out of Congress after only term. It's funny that you (and my Dad both) think he's some kind of liberal. Do you also believe the Fox Fiction Factory's fairy tale that MSNBC, CNN and the other "liberal" (snicker) networks never have any Republicans on their shows? I had to set him straight on that one too.

  14. by Curt_Anderson on May 19, 2025 5:42 pm
Tuk, I don't have a knee jerk opposition to a tax on sugary drinks and junk food. Well, I wouldn't object to a "sin tax" on foods that make Americans unhealthy, although I am not sure how to draw the line between healthy and unhealthy foods. The carbohydrates in bread can lead to obesity. Red meat is a health risk. Bacon clogs arteries. Maybe the line is the balance of nutritional value versus the food's calories, fat etc.

Lead- What we know is that spending indicates wealth. That's what FL has done. We have really high "sales" tax" because those that make more spend more. The "issue" is tax loops congress has built for the rich. Those can be eliminated in the sales tax, but congress will NEVER agree to an "income tax" reduction for them. Period. That is a known quantity.

Shiny thing for princess and wrongagain and curt-
My wife buys "grass fed, grass finished" beef only. Only "organic root vegetables" or those grown by our son and his wife. We use beet leaves AND the root for soups. I own a Subaru build in TN. My wife owns a larger SUV to carry kids (you'll understand that those without kids won't). We did choose to buy acreage and a house and some outbuildings. curt thinks this is "waste" of acreage and should be given back to "the people" just like the Marxist he is. My view is that I actually like my grandchildren and want to raise them knowing where their food comes from. I want them to know that "beef" comes from a cow. A cow gave its life for what we are eating. You need to recognize that. Chicken is a chicken. Rabbit is a rabbit that you raised, a fish is a fish you caught (or someone else caught, so you need to thank them also). So we're correct in thanking that life for giving us life. Otherwise, you're just an elitist prick at the top of your food chain.

  16. by Indy! on May 19, 2025 7:20 pm

Good lord. Congress has lowered taxes on the wealthy many times. Are you sure you live in the United States, Queenie? And btw - sales tax (like the flat tax) is also a regressive tax that hurts the poor and middle class far more than the wealthy. Again, when it comes to finance or money - you know how to collect a welfare check.

  17. by oldedude on May 20, 2025 9:26 am
Since you can't comprehend that trumpster is not responsible for setting taxes, you need to know that's the job of congress. Specifically, should start in the House, but generally versions are argued and passed in both houses. The only thing trumpster can do is to sign the bill.

So you should whine to pelosi/ schumer, or Salazar/ Gimenez (just guessing).

  18. by meagain on May 20, 2025 11:46 am
The President is very much a part of the tax setting. It is his legislative programme. He has to lobby Congress, but if Congress does not finance as he wants, he is powerless.

  19. by Curt_Anderson on May 20, 2025 12:09 pm
Correct, Meagain. Just this morning Trump was in the Capitol imploring Congress to renew the "Trump tax cuts" and pass his "big, beautiful bill". Whatever happens, Trump owns it.

Incidentally, investors are nervous as Trump/G.O.P. House bill threatens to swell deficit. Congressional Republicans are negotiating a spending megabill that could add $3.3 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. Moody’s cut America’s triple-A credit rating on Friday---that's lower than Canada's rating.

  20. by Indy! on May 20, 2025 7:15 pm

You can't make this shit up...

    Indy:
"Good lord. Congress has lowered taxes on the wealthy many times. Are you sure you live in the United States, Queenie? "

    Queenie:
"Since you can't comprehend that trumpster is not responsible for setting taxes, you need to know that's the job of congress."

If I'm not mistaken, I JUST FUCKING SAID CONGRESS LOWERED THE TAXES - not your favorite orange butt buddy. 🙄 Have your mom read my posts to you if your dithering dementia is this bad, OD.
