President Trump is on shaky legal ground if he follows through on a plan to impose a 100% tariff on films produced “in foreign lands.” Experts agree that the pledge is legally dubious and also faces logistical hurdles.
“How on earth are they going to enforce this?” asks Schuyler Moore, a partner at Greenberg Glusker. “The whole thing is a goofball — I can’t imagine how they’re going to do this in practice.”

Late-night hosts are entering the conversation surrounding President Donald Trump’s proposed movie tariffs shaking up Hollywood.
Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel kicked off their respective talk shows on Monday, blasting Trump for “now aiming his wrecking ball at Hollywood,” the latter host said.
For good reason Hollywood hates the tariffs idea. Total worldwide box office of US-produced films is more than 2.5 times the box office of the entire output of the rest of the world. Obviously the other nations in the world would retaliate with their tariffs on American-made films. Since the US produces by far the most films, American film companies will feel it the most in their bottom line since fewer foreign distributors will carry US films as they will be become prohibitively expensive.
