The Conservative Party was once considered the heavy favorite in Canada’s election. But President Trump’s trade war has upended the campaign, with the Liberal Party surging.

Pre-election opinion surveys showed the Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Mark Carney with a slight advantage over the Conservative Party and its leader, Pierre Poilievre, as voters headed to the polls to elect their parliamentary representatives. The leader of the party that wins the most seats will become prime minister.

It will be interesting to see. Poilievre, the Conservative leader, is the most toxic federal politician in Canada's history. A mean-spirited man who has always been a conservative attack dog with nothing but slogans and destructive proposals. He has appealed to the same elements as Trump does. White nationalists, misogynists, conspiracy theorists, and the extreme right. Add to them the terminally ignorant base of the Conservative Party and the ones who want "change" as there will always be after ten years of one governing party.

Carney, the Liberal leader is one of the world's most prominent economists. A former governor of the Bank of Canada when he shepherded it through the 2008 financial meltdown better than other countries experienced. (that he warned was coming before it happened). Then pursued by the British government to take over as Governor of the Bank of England. He was persuaded although reluctant to leave Canada. The British government wanted him because he was considered the best in the world. He then saw the UK through Brexit and is credited with preventing that from being a total catastrophe.

He is a centrist, but in a book he wrote, he was warning of the danger of growing inequality fifteen years ago.
A Rhodes scholar with an Oxford Ph.D and a degree from Harvard.
He also wrote that he is an economist, not because he loves economics, but because he wants to help people.

An interesting fact is how he met his wife, She was also at Oxford and a top economist in her own right. He was goalkeeper for the men's ice hockey team and she captained the women's team.

Compare that with Poilievre, who has a B.A in political science: has never worked in the public sector but was party operative as his first job and elected to Parliament when he was 25. All he knows is political intrigue.

Pierre Poilievre, Canada’s Opposition Leader, Loses Seat in Parliament
It was a stunning upset for the Conservative Party leader, who was first elected in 2004.

All of Canada voted against Trump vicariously. And, good for them, they didn't have to vote for the Dingbat in order to do it!

Now the election is out of the way, unfortunately not a majority, but no danger of a Parliamentary defeat, it will be interesting to see what comes next on the international front. Ironically, given Trump's ambitions for Canada, a lot of European leaders are looking to Carney to take leadership of the Free World since it has been abdicated by America.

Carney is by far the best qualified person for economic leadership. More importantly, for a world that is now telling Trump to get stuffed and wants to get back to serious issues, he is also the best qualified to push it to climate change action.

China is the only country that is really acting with the urgency needed so far. Not many people know that it was Carney who prevented the Paris Accord from collapsing.
