Presidential elections were held in Germany on 13 March 1932, with a runoff on 10 April. Independent incumbent Paul von Hindenburg won a second seven-year term against Adolf Hitler of the Nazi Party (NSDAP). Communist Party (KPD) leader Ernst Thälmann also ran and received more than ten percent of the vote in the runoff.

Candidate and popular vote percentage: Paul von Hindenburg: 53.05%, Adolf Hitler:36.77%, Ernst Thälmann: 10.16%

Hindenburg's reelection failed to prevent the NSDAP from assuming power. Two successive federal elections later that year left it as the largest party in the Reichstag, and anti-republic parties in general holding the majority of seats. Under this political climate, Hindenburg appointed Hitler as Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. Upon Hindenburg's death in 1934 Hitler de facto assumed the presidency, which he combined with the chancellorship to become the Führer und Reichskanzler.

Hitler received word that Hindenburg was on his deathbed the day before he died. He (Hitler) then had the cabinet pass the "Law Concerning the Head of State of the German Reich," which stipulated that upon Hindenburg's death, the office of president would be abolished and its powers merged with those of the chancellor under the title of Führer und Reichskanzler (Leader and Chancellor of the Reich). So although it doesn't "appear" Hitler had anything to do with the death, he was ready for it to happen.

I needed the paragraph above for context between the two. At least it wasn't a "heart attack" that many of the Soviet/Russian leaders have "died of." Or is that lead poisoning? Anyway...
