Disclaimer: This is NOT a Babylon Bee article
It actually feels good to live in a state that actually wants to save money and to give it back to the federal taxpayer. But this is the way FL has been run for awhile. We get money back on tolls, there are "tax holidays" for hurricane season, back to school, etc. If the state doesn't use the money for the reason it was taxed, it goes back to the person. Welcome to a responsible government!

Florida sends $878M back to the federal government, Ron DeSantis announces

Florida is sending $878 million back to the federal government, Gov. Ron DeSantis revealed Friday after a meeting with tech guru Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency team.

DeSantis said the Sunshine State had been trying to send $878,112,000 back to the feds for years, but faced roadblocks from the Biden administration. After his meeting with DOGE, he was able to finalize plans to wire that money back to the US Treasury.

“For years, Florida has been trying to return federal funds to the federal government due to the ideological strings attached by the Biden Administration—but they couldn’t even figure out how to accept it,” DeSantis explained on X Friday.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh. To live in a well run red state. I envy you.

Would it not be more responsible to reduce its sales taxes, the reason for its surpluses? or, since sales taxes disproportionately affect lower income groups, is that the reason they don't want to cut them?

  3. by HatetheSwamp on March 23, 2025 7:58 am

    Sales taxes?

  4. by oldedude on March 23, 2025 9:20 am
Sales tax is a little high. The holidays are about sales taxes. Just before Hurricane season, you can buy batteries, 2-way radios, CB radios, flashlights, diapers, baby food/formula, pet food, things like that to prepare for the season tax free. Prior to a hurricane, there are no tolls on the roads statewide, and the government announces it broadly. Same thing with back-to-school supplies. I think I've mentioned that I get a percentage of our tolls back because they've paid for the initial building of the tollway (which are really nice to drive), so once they pay for upkeep, the regular user residents get money back. It doesn't apply to snowbirds.

Land taxes are pretty high also. I'm still working for 100% VA disabled (I'm at 80% now). If I get that, I pay first responder taxes only. Which may turn out to be between $100-$150/ year for acreage, a house w/pool, a mother-in-law suite, and a barn, with wells and solar. It's a pretty good deal. Also doesn't apply to snowbirds.

This state is the most transparent government I've ever seen. The law is that if they finish a project and if they have extra money, they have to separate that extra, and if they want to use it for something, they have to have a state-wide vote on it or give it back to the taxpayers. Colorado just squirrels it away on another woke project. Then they run out of money and tax you more.

    1. Lol @ bragging that you can drive away toll free as a hurricane is coming in the flood your house. What a BENEFIT to living in Florida. (And no, it's not "statewide")

    2. OD is on disability ... but I'll be he don't want no dag gum socialism!

    3. Anyway, this claim by DeSantis is HIGHLY suspect. What was the money earmarked for? Whats the REAL story as to why they "couldnt" give it back to Washington? What was being done with it while it sat around? If this were a Dem governor, would Repubs still see this as a good thing, or would it be irresponsible to not spend it on Floridians? WILL this money actually go "back to the taxpayer"? Isnt that what spending it in Florida would have done?

You just KNOW there's more to this story.

indy- You are a troll, and nothing but a troll. You have no "ideas" on how to "fix" anything. And you have nothing but hatred for everything. I'd feel sorry for you and your life, but. no. because you're sucking curt's and ROB3RT's cocks under their skirts. The deal is you'll never get called on your shit because of that. Which is way too bad they have no balls and are so two-faced and so dishonest. You're just a little bitch.

OD is on disability ... but I'll be he don't want no dag gum socialism!

Funny. I actually worked for a living, instead of being someone's "party favor" for a night. Of course, I never had to worry about the STDs either.

And, like I've said several times if you would actually read what is posted. It's the VA, the worst healthcare in the US. They will tell you they don't "heal" anything. They treat only the symptoms. That's why the suicide rate among veterans. Mine "might" be free, but I refuse to be treated by them. Too many have died in their care.

"I actually worked for a living"

Yes, because socialism means no one works. 🙄

This is why we can't have nice things.

  9. by oldedude on March 24, 2025 9:44 pm
I actually have retirements. And I've lived in what you call socialist countries (which aren't, their economy is a social welfare). So you really should actually learn what "socialism" is.

  10. by Navy2711 on March 25, 2025 3:52 pm
    1. OD, nowadays, in addition to its hard dictionary definition, the word "socialism" has a soft definition that is simply synonymous with "democratic socialism". So it's accurate to call a country such as Norway "socialist". The benefits that you receive from the V.A. are an example of the "socialism" that people talk about nowadays.

    2. What are these countries that you lived in, that I would call socialist, but actually aren't?

  11. by oldedude on March 25, 2025 4:40 pm
    Germany, GB for two.

  12. by Navy2711 on March 25, 2025 5:03 pm
Again, nowadays "socialism" has a dual meaning, one of which is "democratic socialism". If you don't like that, I'm sorry, but it's partly the right's fault. In a (successful) effort to scare away people from things like universal healthcare, Fox News, and every single other conservative media outlet on the planet, has labelled them simply "socialism", so that people would associate them with corruption, unemployment and bread lines.

So again, the question is: What are the countries that you lived in, that I would call socialist, but actually AREN'T socialist? GB and Germany are both socialist.

GB and Germany are both socialist.

No they're not. You still have private ownership. You really ought to understand what you say what you believe in. They're their economy is a social welfare state. Period. The rest of the fantasy is something people invented to make it sound "not socialism." Socialism is built on the ownership by the government.

: any of various egalitarian economic and political theories or movements advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
If modern socialism was born in 19th-century Europe, it was subsequently shaped by, and adapted to, a whole range of societies.

Socialism is about a change in the means of production—so that the people who do the work are the ones who make the decisions about what gets produced and how.

: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property

: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
Many socialists today believe that socialism is not inevitable but must be built slowly and laboriously by the political and economic actions of men and women seeking a freer and more just society.

: a stage of society in Marxist theory that is transitional between capitalism and communism (see communism sense 2c) and is distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done

    "No they're not."

I just showed you the link that they are. Click on it.

I didn't read the rest of your post, since you're clearly not reading mine.

  15. by oldedude on March 25, 2025 9:19 pm
It's "your" definition of "socialism" which isn't you stupid fuck. Grow up. You should be at least 12 to enter this site.

  16. by meagain on March 26, 2025 8:05 am
Great Britain has not been "socialist since Ted Heath in 1970. It has mostly been a moderate conservative or left leaning middle of the road party, what in Canada is called Liberal, since.

What Socialism is is an interesting question. Ther are six if=dentifiable philosophical roots from Simon's pure socialism to Robert Owen's no ownership of land.

It might surprise most to know that the most influential work on Socialism was none of the six but Oscar Wilde's "The Soul of Man under Socialism, " in which he expounded a kind of Libertarian socialism.

  17. by oldedude on March 26, 2025 4:50 pm
And navy, I did read your post. It was what you "wanted" it to say, but I use the classical definition because of the inaccuracies in the new definition. Again, your definition is a fantasy to attempt to "smooth over" getting into a social welfare system. To me, just use the correct words to describe the act accurately.

So I was bored waiting for a client to get back to me with some changes and decided to drop in and see what's up over here at Curt's place. First thread I click I see OD is still hallucinating things - this time apparently mistaking Navy for me...

indy- You are a troll, and nothing but a troll. You have no "ideas" on how to "fix" anything...

    😂

Still working on the meds mixture, Old Dud?

And he's still a lying, misinformed idiot. Florida is not giving any money back to "taxpayers" - we're giving it back to Elon Musk's upcoming tax cut for the super wealthy. And in return we don't get the government services that we already paid for years ago. Most - if not all of that money - was covid funds to help pay for medicare and other things people couldn't afford at the time. Only an idiot (read: OD) or someone who doesn't know THE BASICS about how government works (read: OD) would think that money is somehow going end up back in their own pocket. Call me when you get that CHECK from the government, Odorous.

    😂

In the meantime, back to work. Some of us (read: Not OD) have real jobs and actually have to work for a living instead of being welfare queens depending on a monthly check from the government to get by.

    😂
