meagain- There's also a dumping ground in the Cozumel straits (between the island and the mainland. The Mexicans have been much more aggressive regarding the tires. Unfortunately, there's a huge issue with things like the plastic bags and six-pack can rings, which are far more dangerous to marine wildlife the Mexican's don't care about.
I just really expected our ecoterrorists would have jumped on this homer bandwagon in the 1970's and wouldn't have kept this quiet for so long. Like they jumped on CO's land issues. Now CO is mostly sportsmen that do the lion's share of the water, wildlife, and land conservation in the state. Dept of Colorado Wildlife is fully funded through sportsmen licenses. Apparently, on the Atlantic side of FL peninsula, they'll just whine about it but do nothing to fix the problem. That to me is really disappointing. I agree with you though, the amount of chemical leaking and breakdown is horrible. But I guess if you don't have to look at it, it doesn't exist😞.
And I haven't dove the eastern side of FL much (we've specifically stayed away from it). We've been to the keys a few times, but we really prefer Panama, Honduras, Qatar, Mexico in a pinch, etc. Qatar, Oman, and that area have the absolutely best water to dive. Pristine, clear and clean. For some reason I expected FL to be up to date with that area. Apparently not.

I understand you're new to Florida and are just learning some of these things, but they've been studying the issue of clean-up for quite awhile now. One problem is some believe the clean-up could actually be worse than leaving them there.

Oh, yeah. while you were here on your ass, I was living on three different continents. That's right. How was diving in Oman when you were there? Or Honduras? Or Egypt? I figured that if you knew so much about global activities, you'd be an "expert" in those also.
