Face it, we're Ugly Americans. Baha!

Just after the puck dropped, and two seconds into the game, Matthew Tkachuk of the U.S. squad and Brandon Hagel of Team Canada dropped their gloves and went at it, broadcast video of the game showed.

Before the puck had dropped and the players had scuffled, it was the Canadian fans who showed their displeasure with Team USA, booing during “The Star-Spangled Banner” and as the American players were introduced.

This comes amid President Donald Trump's remarks that Canada should become a U.S. state — remarks many Canadians find deeply insulting — and as the Trump administration threatens tariffs on its neighbor to the north.

Fighting is why hockey will never be a sport on the scale of the other 3 major leagues.

Fighting has no place in sport. Otherwise, it was an entertaining game. All three American goals came from silly mistakes by Canadian players. The kind that is always likely when players have not sufficiently practised together.

  3. by meagain on February 16, 2025 8:23 am
The booing was wrong and should not have been done. It was not directed at the players, though, half of whom play for Canadian teams where as stars, they are heroes. A lot of the Canadians play for American teams. In fact, most of them do.

F....k Trump signs would have been appropriate.

Canadian Hockey Fans Boo Their Future National Anthem

    I'm agreeing with meagain.

I learned hockey from a bunch of old guys early when I was in the military in the northern tier of the US. (basically south Manitoba). I knew football and baseball more than I wanted to, but this was very different. They taught me the skating, how the Russians could skate figure eights around the euros and north americans. And their puck handling was phenomenal. When we got the Avalanche, we got a Russian line. I still have a signed Kamenski sweater. In his career, he got into one fight. He threw one punch; it coldcocked the opponent. Done. Out on the ice. He was a skater and made me appreciate the sport so much more.

The other thing about hockey. At the very least, the home team would be silent during the National Anthem of the away team. And many times the home team would step and sing the other country's National Anthem. Sportsmanship. The Canuks did that after 9/11 and some other incidents. NO booing.

Hockey is easily the most exciting live sport. However it sucks on TV which also impedes it's popularity.

I'm not a big autograph person - never really understood the point. You meet someone, you shake their hand - do you really need proof that you met them? 🤔 But I do have an autographed hockey stick - Brian Skrudland, aka "Skrewy" - the original captain of the Florida Panthers.

My son-in-law's family is a hockey family, Indy. He quit when he was 16 because he didn't like the violence. 35 years ago, it was brutal.

His cousin played for Tampa Bay back in, I think 2012 when the won the Stanley Cup. Is Tampa in your area?

  8. by meagain on February 17, 2025 12:17 pm
That would have been 2004, not 2012.

If 250 miles away is "my area" - then yes, I am in Tampa's area.

One of the writers for my sports pub was the general manager for a semi-pro hockey team in the Sun Belt League down here. Talk about your fights - there was one that started with two guys after a cheap shot into the boards that ended up with the benches clearing and both teams going at it for at least 15 minutes. The refs just stood to one side and let them fight until they were too tired to throw any more punches. Then they put ONE GUY from each team into the "penalty box" which was basically just the second row of the arena - no glass around it or anything. Some fan walks up to the visiting team guy and throws his coke into his face so the player chases him up the stairs, grabs him and kicks his ass right there in front of his kids. The refs didn't even extend his penalty.
