I saw a scene from this movie that was posted on Facebook by Turner Classic Movies. I had never heard of it. I had to watch it a few times because the powerful comparison with what is happening today absolutely floored me. History may not repeat itself, but boy...

I can't post the actual scene that I saw, unfortunately. But the link has the trailer for it.

The Mortal Storm (1940). MGM's first full length film criticizing the Nazi regime. It was released a year before America got into WW2. I can't imagine that the book it was based on could have been out very long. Hitler even banned the film from Germany. Maybe it will make Trump's banned movie list. It's a tad too close for his comfort I would wager.

If you have TCM, you can watch it on demand. If not, get it from somewhere. The folks at TCM sure knew what they were doing when they posted the scene I saw.

I'm watching the film tonight...

The artwork is nice. How often do you see a young Jimmy Stewart?

    po,

Can you link us to Trump's banned movie list. I can't find it anywhere!

I've seen the film, Ponderer. It's excellent. I highly recommend it too. It's almost certainly Jimmy Stewart's most tragic film.

The Warner Brothers studio was a fierce opponent of Nazism. Jack Warner was a public opponent of Nazism and Fascism, and joined the Hollywood anti-Nazi League. In 1939, Warner Bros. released Confessions of a Nazi Spy, the first major Hollywood film to explicitly oppose Nazism.

Related to this topic, there is a interesting article in the Independent today entitled, "The Nazi shame of the first ever Best Actor winner at the Oscars"

The German actor made Hollywood history in 1929 when he won Best Actor over a dog, before becoming a willing cog in Adolf Hitler’s propaganda machine. Martin Chilton delves into the dark and bizarre story of Emil Jannings".

There were a few very good ones. One was"Mad Dog of Europe, mentioned in the link. Unfortunately, there was more helping the Nazis.

Thelink covers both and is interesting reading. It is called 'How Hollywood helped Hitler.'

Just because Hollywood - like religion - preaches morality, doesn't mean they actually practice it. Think of how long they gladly took money to put cigarette smoking in virtually every movie and TV scene (often with underage kids smoking as well). Long after it had been proven smoking was deadly and the anti-smoking campaign was well under way. They still make movies that pretend we were the good guys in the Vietnam war.
