Both Trump and Hitler became adept at using populist themes, including the use of scapegoats, who were blamed for their listeners' economic hardships. They both gained notoriety for rowdy polemic speeches.

Jimmy Carter was a notable populist, too. Eh? H€ck, Bernie, the rightful winner of the 016 Dem nomination, is a populist, too.

So, we're going from four years of Curt's claim "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap" makes Jesus look like a piker to Trump being Hitler.

These are going to be four fun years!

  2. by Curt_Anderson on January 19, 2025 12:51 pm
Jimmy Carter was not a populist. For example, his "malaise speech" called for the very un-populist notion of reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Bernie Sanders could credibly be labeled a populist. However he is populist on the opposite side of the political spectrum from Trump.

Trump brazenly emulates Hitler, like no other American politician ever has. There are many similarities including Trump's coveting of another country's territory.

How is carefully managing the use of fossil fuels is, un, uh, populist. Remember Carter's inauguration? Carter refused to be limoed around? Rosalyn and Amy and he walked among the people. The symbolism? We're one of you. And, for all his failings, he was one of us.

But, please. Bless us daily with meditations on Trump as the Hitler of the 21st century. That worked really well among the persuadables in the election.

Most American politicians want to be seen as being a man (or woman) of the people. They kiss babies and sample the local cuisine. Ronald Reagan campaigned without a tie and his sleeves rolled up. None of that makes them populists.

Reducing the use of fossil fuels wasn't popular in the late 70's. His sweater wearing, turn-down-the-thermostat preaching was laughed at.

Carter took unpopular pro-immigration stances when he allowed southeast Asians and Cubans escaping oppression into America. He did it even though two thirds of Americans opposed his immigration policies because he believed it was the right thing to do.

Real populists including Trump and Bernie Sanders bemoan immigrants coming into America.

To Sanders' credit, he barely mentions immigration anymore. Sanders probably doesn't want to have anything in common with Trump.

You're so full of it. Name another President who took the oath of office then walked on over to the White House.

George W. Bush, Biden, Obama, Trump, Clinton and probably others in the past walked all or part of their inaugural parade. That doesn't make them all populists.

I wonder if the closest American President might be Cleveland.

As for populists, I think all politicians have a little of the populist in them. They all want to be liked and need to be to get elected. But true populists cam ne left or right. They all feed into people's anger or fears. Xenophobia, scapegoating, extreme nationalism. a number of possibilities.

Perhaps Donald Trump’s greatest con was convincing his supporters that he is one of them. Trump literally lives in a country club.

More and more, Curt, I'm convinced that it's that what you believe is so repugnant to so many, that created the vacuum for Mr Tangerine Man to fill. And, he has.

Thank you for bringing this thread back to the original thesis. Trump, like Hitler, plays upon peoples’ worst instincts, hatred and fears of what they deem repugnant. Trump does not appeal to our better angels or our loftier goals. Trump is about revenge and retribution for his supporters’ perceived victimhood.

    Curt,

Don't forget during these four years, pb's not a Trump supporter. pb thinks that Trump is despicable.

Who pb supports are the people of MAGA, the mommies and daddies and nannas and pappaps who merely want to raise their kids without Big Brother intrusion.

    Make no mistake, it's pb's three-headed monster:

    1. Old-school Title IX feminists,
    2. Anti-TQ LGB groups and activists who are becoming increasingly influential, and,
    3. Those afore mentioned mommies and daddies and nannas and pappaps.

Demean them at will. But, we GOPs own DC!

HtS is an example of how America reached the bottom of the slippery slope to the level of outright Fascism. At this point, it is just an authoritarian government and leader with the power to do worse.

The Courts have gone to the far side and are almost under Trump's control. He can make leadership changes to the civil service and other institutions that will bend to his will. All that stands in the way of full Fascism is the military. I don't see it surrendering.

But, democracy is gone. America is another failed democracy. Because of the votes of the stupid and the fanatics.
