(NYT)The Social Security Administration receives billions in free money each year from an unexpected source: undocumented immigrants.

This group paid an estimated $25.7 billion in Social Security taxes in 2022, according to a recent analysis from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a left-leaning tax research group. Since unauthorized workers cannot collect retirement and other Social Security benefits without a change to their immigration status, the billions they pour into the program effectively act as a subsidy for American beneficiaries.

I keep telling all who will listen that immigrants benefit America.

Outside of the Brown Shorts, I don't think anyone denies they help. Besides the SSI input, they subsidize the food we eat everyday by working for less money than Americans would.

    Indy,
As of January 2025, the average hourly wage for fruit pickers in Oregon was $18, with a range of $16–$19 per hour. Farm hands in Oregon may earn between $16.95 and $20.61 per hour, depending on the city. Orchardists in the Pacific northwest west provide housing for the workers and their families.

Non-immigrants don't seem to be willing to harvest fruit and vegetables no matter how much they are paid. If growers were able to pay a high enough wage to attract US born workers, shoppers would need a bank loan to go grocery shopping.

If Trump manages to deport or scare off any immigrants, watch what happen to produce and meat prices.

Curt... they're paying that much because even migrants won't work for less. Americans won't do it at all. Have you ever tried it? It's back breaking work.

    Indy,
Yup. I picked apples early in the morning in Wisconsin while I went to college in the afternoons. I’ve also picked pears and peaches here in Oregon.

The other part is you need more $ to live out west. I looked up Florida out of curiosity. The average is $12.65 and the majority of fruit pickers are paid between $11.49 and $13.65. The current minimum wage here is $14 an hour. So we're talking below minimum for fruit pickers.

It is a lengthy read, and this snippet may make the situation seem worse than it is. I also wonder about the terms of employment for temporary foreign workers. Are they restricted to the employer who brought them and exploited them?

The hourly wage for undocumented workers is much lower than for U.S.-born workers and legal immigrants — but much of this difference can be explained by differences in education and in other factors. By their very nature, there are no comprehensive official counts of undocumented workers and their wages. In order to study this population, most researchers use a procedure that ascribes undocumented status to individuals in existing databases, based on a series of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Using this type of data, we estimate that, on average, the hourly wages of undocumented workers are 42 percent lower than the wages of U.S.-born workers and legal immigrants. To a large extent this reflects differences between these groups of workers. Undocumented workers tend to have lower educational attainment than documented workers. In addition, there may be differences in skills other than education – for instance, an imperfect command of English or lack of other local skills can be associated with lower wages until workers acquire those skills.
However, when you compare undocumented workers to documented workers with similar education and skills, undocumented workers continue to earn lower wages (although the gap is smaller). We find that the wage gap between documented and undocumented workers in the period 2010-2012 falls to 8 percent when accounting for observable characteristics other than occupation.

"The Social Security Administration receives billions in free money each year from an unexpected source: undocumented immigrants."

Yeah, and they rape and murder and steal! It's a win/win!

If that "dithering and diminished" "feckless dementia-ridden" Doddering Old Fool's string-pullers had only passed H2 at the very beginning of his term...

... and then begun to work on serious, bipartisan immigration reform...

    But, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This is one of the Dem smoke-filled room's biggest failures... and a leading reason why voters handed all of DC to MAGA! Bahaha!

So, how much do government entities pay out to illegals in health-care and housing and other welfare type benefits?... and the cost of prosecuting their crimes, and keeping them in prison.

I don't know. But, I guess it's a whole h€ck of a lot more than goes into Social Security.

    Gang,

Ole pb began saying, back in the day that The ONE was President and "that feckless dementia-ridden" Doddering Old Fool was still pre-dementia, America needs serious bipartisan immigration reform. You woke Swampcultists only support the breaking of current immigration law.

The unwillingness of DC Dems and GOPs to reform immigration law was the first reason ole pb became HatetheSwamp. And, he never regretted it.

    Join me.

Undocumented immigrants commit crimes at far lower rates than MAGAts. Why aren't you mad at them, Brown Shorts?

Concerning Meagain's post - I would argue they have skills we don't. I spent a couple days picking with some as a kid and believe me when I say they'll strip an orange tree of it's fruit before a regular person off the street can get their ladder set-up correctly.

In answer to HtS’s question about how much the government spends on various welfare type programs for undocumented immigrants the answer is zero dollars or close to it. Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for government benefits. Even legal immigrants are not eligible for benefits until quite some time has elapsed, usually five years.

The reason should be obvious. Undocumented immigrants don’t want to be deported so they minimize any contact with government officials. As Indy noted immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than US born citizens. Again the reasons are obvious, committing a minor infraction, like jaywalking or exceeding the speed limit, could result in there being deported. In fact, Trump and Republicans currently want to deport immigrants “accused“ of crimes, not even convicted.

I ain't MAGA, but, bubba!, what makes you think MAGAs don't think all criminals should be prosecuted...

... because, if you think that, you wrong... EFFINwrong.

And, Indy. I've been saying, as I said, I think we should liberalize our immigration policies.

One thing you and I have agreed about in the past is that the Swamp, Dems and GOPs, only uses the issue of immigration to raise money when improving laws would be as easy as pie. Apple pie!

You do realize your second line negates the first one, right? 🙄
