A British psychoanalyst who studied Hitler would have been fascinated by Donald Trump

Much of the following comes directly from a Wikipedia article about Roger Money-Kyrle

Roger Money-Kyrle was a British psychoanalyst renowned for his wide-ranging intellect interested in the ways an individual psyche relates to the wider sphere of human society. He studied psychoanalysis in Vienna.

While visiting Germany prior to Adolf Hitler's appointment as chancellor, Money-Kyrle attended multiple campaign rallies and became intrigued by how political speech used by such authoritarian movements morphs into manipulation and propaganda where political illusions (Freudian sense) replace rational policy solutions. He wrote:

The speeches were not particularly impressive. But the crowd was unforgettable. The people seemed gradually to lose their individuality and to become fused into a not very intelligent but immensely powerful monster [that was] under the complete control of the figure on the rostrum [who] evoked or changed its passions as easily as if they had been notes of some gigantic organ.

The three notes described in his article "The Psychology of Propaganda" is a progression that was repeated at each rally.
"Each listener felt a part of its [the movement's] omnipotence within himself. He was transported into a new psychosis. The induced melancholia passed into paranoia, and the paranoia into megalomania."

Melancholia
For ten minutes we heard of the sufferings of Germany . . . since the war. The monster seemed to indulge in an orgy of self-pity.

Paranoia
Then for the next ten minutes came the most terrific fulminations against Jews and Social-democrats as the sole authors of these sufferings. Self-pity gave place to hate; and the monster seemed on the point of becoming homicidal.

Megalomania
But the note was changed once more; and this time we heard for ten minutes about the growth of the Nazi party, and how from small beginnings it had now become an overpowering force.

The monster became self-conscious of its size, and intoxicated by the belief in its own omnipotence. . . . Hitler ended . . . on a passionate appeal for all Germans to unite.

It's not to difficult find examples of how Trump consciously or unconsciously followed Hitler's three step formula although not necessarily in a disciplined order.

Trump, in his campaign speeches, painted a picture of America in dystopian terms. He focused intently on incidences of crime and plant closures. In his inaugural address he spoke of "American carnage". It prompted George W. Bush, who was in attendance, to remark while departing, "well, that was some weird shit".

Trump constantly railed against the Chinese and global trade, the supposed stream of murderers and rapists crossing our southern border and the ever-popular threat of Muslims.

Trump was obsessed with the crowd size and television ratings. One of his first presidential acts was to direct Sean Spicer to preposterously claim that the crowd at his inauguration was the largest ever. Trump is still selling a similar claim of "size" to the point that his followers still can't accept, despite overwhelming evidence, that he actually got fewer votes than Joe Biden.

Der Fuhrer made it known he was indispensable and occupied a singular position the Third Reich. Trump wasn't as modest as Hitler, announcing at his nomination that "I alone can fix it".

    Curt,

It’s impossible not to see the similarities. I’ve had Trump supporters (in my own family) Say me, “Oh you can’t be serious comparing Trump to Hitler !!! Look at the millions of people Hitler Murdered !!! “. What I can’t get across to them is that yes, of course I can show you the similarities in personality, their ability to manipulate people, and I can show you that the methods they use are exactly the same! The past four years have really stunned me.

I’ve always been an avid reader of what took place in Germany under Hitler and I (like many of us) could never really understand how the German people could have allowed it to happen, and I was thankful in the belief, based on my faith in the American people and our system of government, that it could never happen here. I no longer have that faith because I have seen how easy it is to happen, now I know the frightening fact that it could happen here just as it did in Germany.

What has opened my eyes and bothered me more than anything else is to see how even family members could rationalize elevating someone like Trump to the highest office and most powerful position in the land all the while knowing what he is and seeing the things he’s done. The ability people have to rationalize wrongdoing, to block out what one doesn’t want to believe shocked me. It depresses me to know that this could happen not just here but anywhere.

    HtS,
Now that we give you what you want you're not happy about it.

You have been very outspoken and critical of what you see as Democrats and other progressives mocking dismissal of Trump supporters. You say that we are not trying to understand why some people think differently than we do.

Well islander and I are doing our best to seriously try to understand what makes people like you tick. One cannot analyze and understand Trumpism without analyzing and understanding Trump.

Conservatives and alt-righties were looking for a savior, and they found one in a con man who, btw, did not save them. Rather, he turned them into piles of COVID-ridden corpses by hiding from them the fact that he always personally took COVID very seriously, and then turning around and calling the pandemic a hoax and something that would "disappear" on its own and not be taken seriously. Yet they still love him. THAT is a cult.

These are the people I've been calling "idiots" and "stupid". Yes, yes, I realize that some of them are highly educated and probably have higher than average IQs (although surveys show that they generally are less formally educated than their counterparts on the left,) but that's not what I'm mean by the invective I use to describe them. I mean it more like when I call someone stupid for doing something stupid, as I just did this morning to a close friend who did something stupid. She knows that I wasn't commenting on her IQ.

    Curt,

Actually, I was curious to know how you were able to offer your characterization of a Trump rally.

    It doesn't match my experience.

  15. by Curt_Anderson on September 13, 2021 7:59 am
Your confusion is understandable. That wasn't my characterization of a Trump rally it was Roger Money-Kyrle's characterization of a Hitler rally.

  16. by HatetheSwamp on September 13, 2021 8:02 am

Fine. Goodnough. Why are you endorsing it unquestionably?

  17. by Curt_Anderson on September 13, 2021 8:19 am
Are you asking why am I endorsing the British psychoanalyst's description of a Hitler rally? Because I thought his description of how a crowd can be manipulated was interesting.

That Trump echoed Hitler's technique is obvious to many including people here. That doesn't mean Trump IS Hitler.

  18. by HatetheSwamp on September 13, 2021 8:53 am

The "many people" you reference includes po and Donna and you, I take it.

  19. by Ponderer on September 13, 2021 10:26 am
You take it however you're gonna take it, Hate. There's nothing any of us can do about it.
