As I've been saying, Trump's tariff scheme is harebrained and will lead to disasterous consequences if implemented. He must be stopped.

From the article:

...Ontario Premier Doug Ford said his province was putting together a list of retaliatory measures and would go so far as to cut off energy exports to the U.S. if President-elect Trump slaps Canadian products with a 25 percent tax as promised, the AP reported...

As a major exporter of electricity to Michigan, Minnesota and New York, Ontario powered 1.5 million U.S. homes last year, a spokeswoman for Ford told the AP. Trump’s transition team didn’t respond to the news agency’s request for comment...

About 60 percent of U.S. crude oil imports and 85 percent of electricity imports come from Canada...

Experts predict gas prices in the Midwest will jump by 30 cents per gallon if the tariffs do indeed take effect. Trump has promised to increase domestic drilling to keep gas prices down, but the U.S. doesn’t use the same type of oil that it produces.

Again, posturing from the Canadian side this time. This is why I only sideline during negotiations. Our production is in LPG. Canada produces some also, but the heating oil pedojoe pretty much got rid of because it's a pretty dirty way to heat (LPG being much cleaner). In the large, east coast cities from VA north, heating oil/ kerosene is used a lot. Switching over from heating oil to LPG within a year is plain impossible, contrary to the wishes of many (myself included) and the electric grid can't take it. The entire system (other than ductwork) has to be replaced, which makes the switch in apartment buildings and stores extremely expensive.

So back to the Canadians. They are more aware than I am about the oil used in the Northeast. It's their counteroffer. I don't think he got what he wanted when he flew down to Fl. And like I've said a bunch of times before. What goes on in public generally isn't what is going on in private. For better or worse.

You should learn before you write, OD. New York, Michian, and Wisconsin are dependent on electricity from Ontario. Much of the East gets power from Quebec. Manitoba feeds some mid-western states. If you want blackouts and brownouts this winter keep pushing.

30% of American oil comes from Canada. The tariffs we can put on that will cause a significant price increase at your pumps.

Power is only one tool. Tariffs will hurt Canada more because of relative size. But, if we apply them broadly instead of dollar for dollar they will hurt America far more in dollar amount.

There will also be the unseen hurt to American corporations in Canada.

What may be most damaging for you though less in money terms is the withholding of critical minerals and metals.

Believe me, there is no posturing. Canadians are mad and ready to take on Trump. They have been quietly disturbed since the free trade began in the 1990s by the loss of Canadian manufacturing. Some economists also point to the degree of American ownership as the reason for poor Canadian productivity. They are not good corporate citizens and their R & D is done in the US and not Canada.

Your narcissistic, megalomaniac new President may have opened a real can of worms.

ole pb'll repeat what he's been predicting since before the election. Trump won't execute the tariffs he's threatening... particularly threatening Canada with. In time, behind scenes, he'll signal to Canada what concessions he wants and the Canadian Swamp will bend forward and grab their ankles.

Ole pb'll repeat what he's said many times over many years. He despises Trump... but he doesn't suffer from TDS.

But, meagain, take note it's America First now, now Canada.

  4. by meagain on December 12, 2024 12:44 pm

At this point. PB, its looking worse than expected. The federal government under Trudeau is trying diplomacy while making clear there will be retaliation if it happens. But, at the meeting of the PM, Finance Minister, and the Provincial premiers, most of the Premiers wanted a much tougher response. It is from them that the threat of energy cuts and cuts to export of critical minerals has come and they have the power to do so.

These are critical to your economy as well as to the comfort of consumers. They will happen if necessary. Trump has to learn that Canada is a Middle Power, not some developing weakling. Our economy is the eight largest in the world.

  5. by meagain on December 12, 2024 12:50 pm

Possibly more important for the long term is that you are losing your closest friend and ally. We can no longer trust the US. It will be difficult for Canada for a time but will lead to a shift in our trade to a more European and Pacific ountry=ies focus. Plus back to more manufacturing in Canada.

It will take some time, but we can easily sell the oil elsewhere, too, and you need 4 million bbls a day from us now.

None of it needs to happen but even if the tariff action does not come about, there will be a cooling in the relationship and a trade shift.

You should learn before you write, OD. New York, Michian, and Wisconsin are dependent on electricity from Ontario. Much of the East gets power from Quebec. Manitoba feeds some mid-western states. If you want blackouts and brownouts this winter keep pushing.

I gave you a broad swath of that in my post that you said I didn't. That's what the thread is about. I didn't think I had to restate the basic premise of the thread. You should learn before you write, wrongagain. I'm quite aware of where our energy comes from.

Perhaps not posturing, but like I said (had you read it), this is about negotiations. And unless the canuk citizens directly build your trade agreements, it does you no good to be "mad and ready to take on Trump." That's completely immaterial to the thread and question. You're an anglophile. Every other country in the world is wrong except for you. Again, that doesn't concern me. It only shows how narcissistic you are.

The problems with our manufacturing are ours. I don't blame other countries for our shortcomings. Why don't you lower your taxes to bring companies back to Canada? Because you like your welfare state too much. You can't exist without a huge tax base.

You see that here in the States. Companies are moving out of highly taxed states and moving to lower or no state taxes to allow employees' money to go further. Welcome to the real world.

Your narcissistic, megalomaniac new President may have opened a real can of worms.

Perhaps. I think we'll actually reach an agreement. Maybe sooner. Maybe later. Like I said before. I don't think Trudeau got what he wanted by kissing trumpster's ring. I also thought trumpster was very wrong about insulting him. Once was too many, more than that was out of line. Even for trumpster.

    OD,

Do you think meagain appreciates how minute Canada's economy is compared to the US's?... and, how dependent it is on our custom?

  8. by oldedude on December 12, 2024 4:12 pm
No... Again, his world is far different than mine. I don't think it's a good or bad, just different. It's also based on wokeness and social justice. So I really try to just understand where he's coming from and move from there. We're both a tad crusty so there's that.

  9. by HatetheSwamp on December 13, 2024 3:54 am

"It's also based on wokeness and social justice."

    Exactly!

What I think bothers our woke Swampcultists, like Donna and meagain, is that Trump is, very simply, a pragmatist. He's not conservative. He's certainly not a libertarian. In fact, he the least conservative GOP presidential candidate since Eisenhower.

Our woke Swampcult want Trump to be a conservative. Then their old-school ideological arguments would fit. They don't fit.

    And, our progressives look foolish...

...and, they looked foolish to those moderate and independent common sense voters who voted overwhelmingly against the Dingbat.

  10. by oldedude on December 13, 2024 6:51 am
And yet he is all of those things, but again his pragmatism is his strong suit. And of course, they'll hate everything about him because he's "not them." Yes, there are things I don't like that he does. And I've said that.

This election is exactly what the founders banked on. Pulling us back to center. Welcome to checks and balances.

  11. by meagain on December 13, 2024 12:58 pm

As I said, Canada is the eight largest economy in the world: not minuscule compared to anything. The USA is also very dependent on Canada. Again, I told you that 9 million American jobs are dependent on trade with Canada. A lot of your power, your oil and gas, minerals and metals, all come from Canada and you can't easily replace any of it.

The stupidity and gullibility that calls decency "woke," is beyond comprehension. To be woke means nothing more than to be a good, responsible citizen who cares about his fellow man and about a livable society.

Trump is not woke. He is a selfish, greedy, self-absorbed monster who would sacrifice any of you for personal gain. A radical libertarian in fact. Pragmatic? Only a complete idiot would think so.

    You are welcome to him.

  12. by Donna on December 13, 2024 1:14 pm

And we are stuck with him. God help us all.

  13. by Indy! on December 13, 2024 1:44 pm

    "Pulling us back to center"?

Not only ia there no left in the USA - there is no center either.

  14. by oldedude on December 13, 2024 1:46 pm
The stupidity and gullibility that calls decency "woke," is beyond comprehension.

I am a strong believer in MLK Jr, "judging a person by their character, not the color of their skin." Woke/DEI is a racist view of "equity" that has no thought of meritocracy. So you don't "earn" anything. Your position is given to you because of the color of your skin, or how you identify your gender. Companies are figuring out this is the absolutely worst way to hire. They've gotten mediocre workers while non-woke companies are getting people that are smarter, and willing to learn. I'm not saying that a person that would be considered for a DEI position can't be as smart, but the basics of hiring are forgotten during the DEI process.

  15. by meagain on December 13, 2024 6:04 pm

Actually, OD it is your comment that is racist. Woke is the opposite of racism. It is colour blind and is about progress and equity for all.

BTW, here are the trade figures of a couple of years ago. Do you think they are minuscule? Or that the USA can easily replace them?

Before you comment on the imbalance, it is the balance of trade, not payments or any other of the complexities of international economic relations.

first, you really need to read the posts. I never said your trade figures are minuscular. I'm sorry if they confuse you.

Actually, OD it is your comment that is racist. Woke is the opposite of racism. It is colour blind and is about progress and equity for all.

DEI is a racist theory that ensures "equity" not "equality." Two different things. You need to read up on that.

Again, justin is just a little butt hurt little boy trying to play on the "adult" stage. He lost, and will continue to. He'll slip into a third world trade country soon because he can't play well with others.
