My wife and I have been busying ourselves recently with mattress shopping. Here are some things that I learned.
1. Memory foam mattresses and mattresses with a thick layer of memory foam are good for people who like sleeping in an indentation. If you get up in the night for a few minutes and like returning to a mattress that "remembers" the shape of your body then you'll like memory foam. A plus is that it has minimal motion transfer, so you won't be jarred by your partner rolling over. We tried a Nectar brand memory foam hybrid for almost their entire one year trial period before returning it. Btw, Nectar ships their mattresses compressed and vacuum sealed in a box directly the customers. Once unpacked that mattress grows to full size in a few hours. Nectar included a free mattress cover, sheets and pillows which we were able to keep. The price wasn't bad. It was about $800. Many people would be totally satisfied with the Nectar we tried.
2. No, old mattresses do not double in weight as a result of dead skin cells and mites in your mattress. Many mattress salespeople seem to believe that myth. See link.
3. For my wife and me, the best option was a Doctor's Choice Elite Euro Top Mattress from Denver Mattress. The mattress cost us $1130 (including a required mattress cover). It's an innerspring mattress with a layer of something soft (HyperGel® High Airflow Visco Foam and 2LB High Density Plush Foam) . Unlike a memory foam mattress it rebounds as you change positions. It also has minimal motion transfer.
4. Locally at least, most mattress stores give customers a 30 days money-back satisfaction guarantee. Denver Mattress has a four month trial period. It takes some people (like my wife) a while to determine what they like and dislike about a mattress.
5. Some mattresses supposedly are made with cooling materials on the top layer. Bamboo fiber is often touted and it is supposedly cooler than cotton and other common fibers. Maybe bamboo and these other fibers are cooler, although I doubt there is a significant difference. Especially if a person has a mattress cover, sheets and blankets, then any cooling properties are negated.
6. My wife is more particular about mattresses than I am. As long as I am not sleeping in a hammock (or a close facsimile) I am good.
