America does not have a parliamentary system of government. America has a presidential system. We do not have coalition governments formed by major and minor parties after the election.

In our system there are two viable political parties. For the last 168 years those parties have been the Democrats and the Republicans. Just as in a baseball game, only one of the two teams competing can win the game.

Third parties are like interfering fans on the sidelines. They can interfere and cause one team to lose, but they cannot win themselves no matter how spectacular a catch a fan might make. "The Steve Bartman Incident" in Wrigley Field 11 years ago is the perfect analogy for third party interference. Chicago Cubs fan Bartman prevented a Cubs outfielder from catching the ball which led to the Cubs losing the game and the series.

    Good analogy.

The call on the play involving the Cubs outfielder should've been ruled an out like the one involving Mookie, which Sheri and I saw happen in real time. Btw, officials at Yankee Stadium gave those two seats the next night to a little boy who's battling cancer and I think one of his parents. Apparently the two perps had tickets for that game. I think they were banned from Yankee Stadium for life.

You just supported my point about Ranked choice Voting. Thank you.

    Who? How?

  4. by HatetheSwamp on November 2, 2024 11:11 am

Constitutionally, Curt, we don't have a two party system.

  5. by Ponderer on November 2, 2024 11:20 am

"Constitutionally, Curt, we don't have a two party system." -Hate

    Meaningless.

"Constitutionally", we don't have an FAA. Or an Air Force. So, nothing legally exists unless it's listed and spelled out in the Constitution?

  6. by Curt_Anderson on November 2, 2024 11:21 am
    HtS,
What is that supposed to mean? The Constitution doesn't even mention political parties. There are millions of things NOT mentioned in the Constitution.

  7. by HatetheSwamp on November 2, 2024 11:53 am

"Third parties are like interfering fans on the sidelines."

Interfering with what that is essential, even important?

I suspect that you may be worried that Jill Stein may take some votes from Cackles.

    Sour grapes.

  8. by Ponderer on November 2, 2024 12:29 pm

He's gone, Curt. He's just not here anymore.

  9. by Indy! on November 2, 2024 1:07 pm

Anyone sitting in Bartman's seat would have done the same thing he did.

  10. by Donna on November 2, 2024 1:21 pm

    No they wouldn't.

  11. by Indy! on November 2, 2024 2:57 pm

Donna... 3 people were there - all 3 tried to catch. That's true in both videos. There aren't a whole lot of baseball purists like you left who know when and where fans are allowed to catch the ball. And the Bartman ball was called correctly - it was in the fans' section and Bartman had the right to catch it.

In case there is anybody on the left side of the political spectrum who thinks it's a good idea to vote for Jill Stein because she's "better" that Kamala Harris consider what Donald Trump says:
"I love the Green Party. Jill Stein just may be one of my... I've never met her but she may be one of my favorite politicians."

Of course Trump likes Stein, because he hopes that she can reduce Harris's votes in battleground states, especially Michigan with its large Arab-American population.

    On a related note...
Uncommitted co-founder Abbas Alawieh, a Lebanese American and former chief of staff to Rep. Cori Bush, said on CNN Tuesday that he is voting for Harris even though his movement is not endorsing her. See X link.

Uncommitted movement declines to endorse Harris, but encourages against Trump, third-party votes
"We urge Uncommitted voters to register anti-Trump votes and vote up and down the ballot. Our focus remains on building a broad anti-war coalition both inside and outside the Democratic Party," the group said. See ABC News link.

Some Muslim Americans moving to Jill Stein in potential blow to Kamala Harris

    reuters.com

  14. by Curt_Anderson on November 5, 2024 12:05 pm
    HtS,
Your Reuters link is so two months ago. Yes, some of the Michigan Palestinians and other Muslims were threatening to vote for Jill Stein, but they are smart enough to know that Kamala Harris is a much better option for anybody who cares about the people of Gaza. Netanyahu BFF Donald Trump has a history of bigoted anti-Muslim statements and proposals.

  15. by HatetheSwamp on November 5, 2024 12:39 pm

    Curt,

Several mayors of Muslim communities in Michigan endorsed Trump.

  16. by Donna on November 5, 2024 1:01 pm

In 2020, 70% of Arab Americans voted for Biden. That support slipped to a dismal 12% in the polls before Biden bowed out several months ago. 43% are supporting Harris according to recent surveys.

  17. by HatetheSwamp on November 5, 2024 1:20 pm

It will be interesting to see how Muslim Americans actually do vote.

  18. by Curt_Anderson on November 5, 2024 1:33 pm
    Donna,
It will be interesting to see what happens in Michigan. It wouldn't take much from a third party candidate to impact the outcome. When Jill Stein last ran in Michigan, in 2016, she had 1.07% of the vote. In 2020 Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate, had .25% of the vote.

There is a difference between what people tell pollsters and their actual vote cast. Especially when they are attempting to influence a major party candidate to alter their position on a certain issue.

Besides humanitarian concerns about Gaza, etc. there probably is a misogyny factor in the Muslim community just as there is other communities.

  19. by Indy! on November 5, 2024 6:18 pm

There's a very simple way to eliminate third parties, Curt - since you seem to hate them so much. Simply tell the Ds to quit nominating shitty candidates. If Kamala loses tonight, it means the Ds lost 2 out of 3 times to the worst candidate in history. Doesn't that kind of send the message that you guys are not motivating people?
