I am sure Hezbollah is even madder at Israel (if that's possible). But it has to be disruptive and demoralizing to their organization.

(NPR)Electronic pagers belonging to members of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah exploded simultaneously on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least nine people and wounding around 2,800 across the Middle East nation. The method of attack was highly unusual, if not unprecedented, and raised the specter of an escalation in the Israel-Hezbollah fighting.

At overwhelmed hospitals, wounded were rushed in on stretchers, some with missing hands, faces partly blown away or gaping holes at their hips and legs, according to AP photographers. On a main road in central Beirut, a car door was splattered with blood and the windshield cracked.

The other thing it tells the terrorists is that Israel has everybody's "number." It's a great way to remind all of them (for life) how close they are to the virgins. Especially now, when there's a lot of "assumed" preparation for Iran's attack from the North, which would create a two-pronged war for Israel.

If there's ever a nuclear war, it will begin there.

Donna- That's what the Muslims are banking on. They want it to end "in the blink of an eye." That's the whole "12th Imam" thing, Armagedón, etc.

  5. by Indy! on September 17, 2024 8:04 pm

    "Christians" want it too.

    Cite?

Christians aren't in to the martyrdom thing, where al Qu'oran convinces followers that being a suicide bomber and murdering innocent people will get them to "heaven." In that way, sinners committing "istishhad" (Martyrdom) are automatically given "shaheedor" and have an exalted place in Islam.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the term istishhad has been redefined by Jihadists to emphasize the "heroism" of sacrifice, rather than portraying it as an act of victimization. This concept has evolved into a military and political strategy known among Jihadist groups as "martyrdom operations". although Western media commonly refer to them as suicide attacks. These acts contain "a central ideological pillar and organizational ideal" of waging "active jihad against the perceived enemies of Islam".

The biblical account of Stephen's martyrdom in Acts 6-7portrays him as the first Christian martyr after Christ. His steadfastness and forgiveness towards his persecutors, as he prayed for their forgiveness, exemplify the essence of martyrdom.

    You are exactly right, OD.

Prior to Constantine making Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire, there were several waves of persecution of Christians because Christians refused to participate in Emperor worship.

Jesus told His disciples, "You will be my witnesses." The Greek word for witness is martyr. In time, that word came to mean what it means to us today because so many faithful disciples were imprisoned and put to death. But, seeking death was not what Jesus taught. Quite the opposite.

I think the major difference is that if you a "sinner" in Islam, you can redeem yourself through martyrdom (thusly young women with suicide vests to absolve the sins of the men of the family). Versus Christians who are already believers and disciples dying because they are already believers and followers of the faith.

  9. by Donna on September 18, 2024 8:16 am

Constantine was the first Christian Nationalist.

  10. by HatetheSwamp on September 18, 2024 10:41 am

    Donna,

    Bang on!

The merging of Christianity and the Roman state corrupted Christianity in a way that today's institutionalized church suffers from.

Donna- you have to figure that any leader that changes the state religion will be considered hateful and the oppressor by the prior religion. And honestly, any national leader that has a "national religion" uses their position and office as a national force with other groups. I think that is far less so in the countries where forcing a "national religion" has much less bite than those with a national religion. The only exceptions may be Communist countries, where the state religion is the state. Much like in some countries it's "socialism" or another political view.

Guess you got lucky, OD... your pager didn't explode with the rest of them.

Re the Pagers that don't seem to be part of the religious debate.

I think this is as evil as it gets. Israel got to these pagers before they were delivered and implanted the explosives. Being ordered by Hezbollah does not mean only Hezbollah operatives would be affected - as transpired. An ambassador of another country was killed. Women and children were maimed. Innocent bystanders.

It ranks with their targeting of schools and hospitals in Gaza. Israel has now become a pariah nation to most countries in the outside world. It survives only because of the protection of the USA.

The geopolitical version of being "mobbed up".

    Meagain,
We probably all agree that minimizing civilian casualties is a war or conflict should be a very high priority. I am no fan of Hezbollah, but I will grant you that the method used by Mosad was diabolically cunning. I know I won't be buying any used electronic communication devices from Lebanese dealers.

These devices were issued to Hezbollah members. The vast majority of the dead and injured who were hospitalized were young men. If you wanted to target only Hezbollah, booby trapping their pagers and walkie-talkies was a pretty efficient way of doing it.

Those listening devices explosions were much more targeted than the missiles Hezbollah launches into Israel.

Israel got to these pagers before they were delivered and implanted the explosives. Being ordered by Hezbollah does not mean only Hezbollah operatives would be affected - as transpired.

I agree with curt on this one. If you want to specifically target the enemy. This is an awesome way to do it. You know they'll be held by a member. Meaning an operational piece of the enemy. Someone that ranks enough to have a pager. Not some hanger-on. So these are going to people that have sworn their lives to the genocide of Israel and all Jews in the world. I guess the question is; would you be shedding the same tears for targeting those under Milošević's army of genocide? Or the Gestapo/Hitler's inner circle members (had pagers been invented at that time)?

This also specifically targets your enemy and their structure. This is brilliant considering the high rate of specific targeting and being low in collateral damage. Unlike others here, I think it beats the hell out of targeting civilians, families, infants, and children. Having been part and parcel to the terrorist wars in Europe, then switching to the Middle East, I have no love of the cowardly way terrorism is done. I've been split for decades about how to fight back a cowardly adversary that will take out civilians at will. Even their own country members, and many that support them.

I think what's forgotten is that these folks (all involved) are at war. Again, how far to you want to go back to start throwing stones at each other about the past wars and "who started what." That's just stupid. When will it end? At the fields of Armageddon. I don't expect anything less.

And there you have it... eventually EVERYONE comes around to Indy's way of thinking, even my old buddy OD. If you care to dig up the old post from a few months back - you will find the gif below was the only position I ever offered on Israel v. Hamas. Congrats OD - I knew you could do it (okay, that's a lie - but manly / totally not gay air fist bump in 3... 2... 1... anyway 👊 )

  18. by oldedude on September 18, 2024 9:07 pm
So if that's the only thing you got from that, you're the shallowest person on earth. Which is fine, if it believes it so...

  19. by meagain on September 19, 2024 9:36 am
The pager ploy was a breach of International Law. One more breach. Booby Traps are prohibited. These devices, too, could have been in the hands of anyone, not just Hezbollah operatives. Because Hezbollah ordered them does not mean they were for the use of only military personnel. In fact, Hezbollah, as a government in its own right, employs medical people and other civilian employees. Medical personnel are among the dead and wounded. Also, many citizen bystanders with no connexion to Hezbollah were wounded, and maimed in many cases.

The UN had another vote yesterday ordering Israel to end its occupation of Gaza and the West Bank within a year. It carried by 124 -14 with 43 abstentions. Guess who headed the 14 while many of the absr=tensions were American Allies.

When will the USA get the message that the world is getting fed up with its support of an Apartheid state that is also illegally occupying the territory of another while terrorising and murdering citizens of that other?

  20. by Indy! on September 19, 2024 9:57 am

Wrong OD. The only difference between your take and mine is mine limits the damage substantially. I know you love all war all the time so...

When will it end? At the fields of Armageddon. I don't expect anything less.

...Armageddon is just fine with you, but most of us would take nuking Israel and Gaza over nuking the entire planet the way you want to.

PS: Again - I try to be nice, and you always gotta be the dick you are, queenie.
