If Harris decides not to pick Mark Kelly, and any of you wonder why, watch the YouTube clip below or visit the Washington Post story.

A week ago, I thought he would be a safe pick, but I'm still cringing from the video...

Mark Kelly: Astronaut, senator, VP short-lister ... ex-vitamin huckster
By Jim Geraghty
July 31, 2024 at 6:45 a.m. EDT

In 2015, former astronaut Mark Kelly rode a motorcycle onto a stage in China, with an American flag on one handlebar and the flag of the People’s Republic of China on the other. After dismounting, he told the audience before him how terrific Shaklee vitamins were, and how he took Shaklee Vitalizer on the space shuttle Endeavour in 2011, an out-of-this-world event honored on the Shaklee Facebook page.

“I took Shaklee vitamins and the Shaklee rehydration drink while in orbit aboard the space shuttle!” Kelly said, pumping his fists before the audience. “They worked very well for me in a very demanding environment. Now, it is up to you. It is up to all of you to take those tools that Shaklee and Roger” — company CEO Roger Barnett — “has given you, and turn it into something big! Each and every one of you can create your own successful Shaklee business, and it is the rewards from that business that will help you achieve your own dreams!”

In a video of his appearance in China, a Mandarin-language introduction says Kelly “lives in the hearts of the American people.” Then Kenny Loggins’s “Danger Zone” — straight out of “Top Gun” — plays, and Kelly drives his double-flagged motorcycle onto the stage.

Noooo! The old multilevel marketing scam.

Also I wonder what embarrassing biographical detail Roy Cooper preferred not to expose to national scrutiny.

He did a foreign market commercial...?

    Heavens to Murgatroyd!!!

    At least it isn't Amway.

Since perception in politics is reality, the problem with the commercial is multifold. Nothing he did is illegal, but...

The ad is hokey. It's a sketchy product. Supplements are bunk. Multilevel marketing is a rip-off. Kelly is not simply a voice-over announcer, he's giving it his personal endorsement. The county in question is China.

All that is fodder for opposition ads.

It's a unseemly, along the lines of Gov. Kristi Noem doing a commercial for a dental clinic.

    Gang,

Ask po and Donna how voters in Arizona feel about Kelly. If he'd help Kammy win there, that's all that matters.

I don't understand the belief that adding a well-liked Democratic office-holding politician from a contested state to the presidential ticket improves the chances of the ticket winning in that contested state. Where's the supporting evidence for that? I have trouble believing that, say, a Democratic voter in PA would decide not to vote for Harris if she chose someone besides Josh Shapiro as her running mate. Same for Mark Kelly.

    Btw, I'm rooting for Walz.

    Donna,
Last night on MSNBC a former Obama campaign manager said that VP choice is worth about a half a percent in the popular vote. It was not clear to me if he meant nationally or in the running mates’ home states. But his overall point was that the running mate’s location does not make that much difference. The last vice presidential choice that came from a battleground state that I can think of was LBJ.

I’d be very happy with Governor Walz as the running mate. As Sen Amy Klobuchar has said, “in Minnesota we tell kids that ‘’someday you can grow up to be vice president’”.

Right, Trump is a huckster. Do we need our own huckster to compete with him? Anyway I am glad to have Kelly in the Senate for another four years. Yes, I know his hawking Shaklee is just a footnote in his impressive biography. But Gov. Walz is now my favorite along with Gov. Andy Bashier.

  10. by Donna on August 1, 2024 10:30 am

I'd like to know how an advantage of even a figure as small as .5% was derived.

One hint as to whom Harris may have chosen as her VP could be where her announcement is going to be held (Philadelphia). Also, of all the battleground states, PA is where Harris has the largest deficit (4 pts).

  11. by Curt_Anderson on August 1, 2024 10:48 am
    Donna,
There have been 100 or so vice-presidential candidates who were the running mates of non-incumbents. I imagine they counted how often the running mate carried his/her home state and how often it mattered. That is, was there any indication the top of the ticket wouldn't have carried that state anyway. For example, I don't think Biden needed Kamala Harris to help him carry California.

He took Harris for the black vote. Which is funny if you know anything about Jamaica.

"Right, Trump is a huckster. Do we need our own huckster to compete with him?" -Curt

Of course we don't need one. But if Kelly is tapped for VP, I don't see it as a tremendously huge deal killer, compared to what Trump did.

And you can be absolutely sure that the family behind Goya that Trump did that commercial for on the Resolute desk gave him a far greater payday than what Kelly got for his above-board deal.

And Curt, are you sure that Kelly doesn't actually believe in the product? Yeah I dislike all multilevel marketing practices. I think that they are the capitalistic equivalent of the biggest religious cults. They use a lot of the same tactics too. But if Kelly actually uses and believes in the product, he probably felt he had a good reason to do it.

  14. by Ponderer on August 1, 2024 4:43 pm

And I'm hoping for Walz too.

  15. by Indy! on August 2, 2024 10:28 am

    Few points...

    1. And you can be absolutely sure that the family behind Goya that Trump did that commercial for on the Resolute desk gave him a far greater payday than what Kelly got for his above-board deal.

You can tell from the smile on the orange man's face.

    2. I don't think Americans hate China as much as Fox and the MIC do. Pretty sure most people understand without them we'll be paying a lot more for everything.

    3. I went to a MLM meeting for Amway back in the 80s if anyone is interested in details. They actually had a pretty compelling program for people who know how to sell stuff.
