Many Republicans, including some in Trump’s inner circle, have been calling Biden’s decision to leave the race — and the rush by many Democratic leaders to support Harris — an undemocratic “coup” that disenfranchises the millions of Democrats who voted in the party’s primaries. It’s an echo of an older G.O.P. talking point claiming that the Democratic Party conspired to prevent Senator Bernie Sanders from winning the nomination in 2016 and 2020 — and part of a consistent effort to paint their rivals as elites who steamroll their rank and file.
