A couple weeks ago, I linked to James Carville's podcast where he had a discussion with Ron Brownstein, political analyst for the Atlantic. Carville thought the Democrats should have a selection process for the nominee, a mini-primary. Brownstein said the problem with that idea was primarily supply, not demand. Lots of people wanted the drama of a contested convention, but he couldn't foresee many candidates willing to take on Harris. Gavin Newsom, Gretchen Whitmer and others probably wouldn't want to alienate key groups in the party, and would rather wait for 2028.

After Biden stepped aside, Harris said she wanted to "earn" the nomination. But it doesn't sound like anyone is going to challenge her. Penn. Gov. Josh Shapiro just endorsed Harris, so he won't be running against her. Harris is picking up a lot of other endorsements, too. Looks like Brownstein may have been right.

Bloomberg is reporting that Gretchen Whitmer will not challenge Harris.

I don't believe she will face any challengers. She has the built-in advantage of inheriting Biden's campaign apparatus and campaign money (without facing legal challenges). Who could collect endorsement like Harris already is? What Democrat could enlist an army of campaign workers to take her on?

Suddenly this election is about Donald Trump's age, cognitive ability and fitness for office. I look forward to debate between the former prosecutor and the convicted felon recidivist.

    I like her chances!

Pelosi wants a "mini primary". Obama probably agrees. Neither has announced an endorsement. But it's possible, maybe even probable that no Dem will challenge Harris.

Possible challengers to Harris say they're standing down.

Ds have to run Kamala. The only way out is the mini-primary/convention or Harris doing the right thing and stepping aside.

BTW, so far as 2028 for Whitmer? I doubt the Ds would be hot to run another woman if Kamala loses.

There is a palpable energy. It's tangible. I can feel it. I've been feeling it for a couple hours now.

It feels like it's coming from all over the world.

A sense of spontaneous, positive hope. An existential sigh of relief.

CNN is reporting that Gavin Newsom and Pete Buttigieg have also endorsed Harris.

So has the North Carolina governor, Roy Cooper.

Looks like Joe Manchin might challenge her. I can't imagine he would get much support.

  8. by Indy! on July 21, 2024 4:59 pm

Oh man - I would LOVE to see Manchin challenge her just to see his reaction when he gets hammered by the Last Call VP.

  9. by Indy! on July 21, 2024 5:00 pm

Agree Pondy. Think everyone is taking a feel good day knowing another Trump admin is not a sure thing now.

  10. by ROB3RT on July 21, 2024 7:29 pm

And it appears Marianne Williamson will challenge Harris (and possibly Manchin).

  11. by Donna on July 21, 2024 7:31 pm

    Oh no.

  12. by Indy! on July 22, 2024 11:17 am

Waste of time and money for Marianne although I'd take her over Kamala.

  13. by Donna on July 22, 2024 1:49 pm

I like Marianne much more than Kamala, but no one has heard of her. That's always been the main problem with progressive candidates.

  14. by Indy! on July 22, 2024 2:02 pm

And no one will. My guess is there will be the same media blackout we saw with Bernie when it comes to Marianne (if she decides to proceed).

  15. by Donna on July 22, 2024 2:41 pm

I don't remember there being a media blackout on Bernie.

If Bernie had never called himself a socialist and registered as a Democrat, he might have won in 2016.

People like Jill Stein and Marianne Williamson have never put in the effort to be serious politicians, which is why hardly anyone has heard of them. They surface every 4 years as vanity candidates and accomplish exactly zero. What a waste of talent.

I don't remember there being a media blackout on Bernie.

Wow - get your brain checked. And soon.

    Seriously. 😳
