As I've mentioned, my mom grew up in the Pennsylvania part of Appalachia. There's much in the early chapters of the book that I can relate too. It's poignant and compelling.

It's a great book. Even if you are a woke, white electric limousine lovin progressive SwampLover, I think you'll like it.

Vance blames hillbilly culture and its supposed encouragement of social rot. Mom struggled with drug addiction (which I know you don't care about, but it has a huge affect on the children of addicts). Even young, he wanted to get a job to supplement his grandparents income, whom he was living with. So he was raised very poor. Instead of being the victim, JD feels it is up to the individual to take care of their own life. Whereas the dims believe everyone should be a victim of their circumstances and live under the government's dole and thumb. He did four years in the Marines, went to Ohio State, then to Yale with a "JD." So like so many others that liberals hate, he started poor and actually worked to where they are. by Indy! on July 16, 2024 11:10 am Very similar to my upbringing minus the mom doing drugs (my mom won't even touch alcohol) and Vance eventually ending up on the government dole again.
