(ABC News)Special counsel David Weiss has charged an FBI confidential source who provided derogatory information about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden to the bureau with felony false statement and obstruction charges.

Weiss charged Alexander Smirnov, 43, with one count of making a false statement and one count of creating a false and fictitious record related to statements he made to the FBI on a document known as an FBI Form 1023.

Charging documents show Smirnov was a confidential source for the FBI and provided "false derogatory information about [President Biden] and [Hunter Biden] ... in 2020, after [Biden] became a presidential candidate."

(NY Times)The special counsel investigating Hunter Biden has charged a former F.B.I. informant with fabricating claims that President Biden and his son sought two $5 million bribes from a Ukrainian energy company, according to an indictment in a California federal court.

The former informant, Alexander Smirnov, 43, was accused of falsely telling the F.B.I. that Hunter Biden, then serving as a paid member on the board of Burisma, demanded the money to protect the company from an investigation by the country’s prosecutor general at the time.

The story Mr. Smirnov told investigators was part of a series of explosive and unsubstantiated claims by Republicans that the Bidens engaged in potentially criminal activity — allegations central to the party’s efforts to impeach the president.

In July, Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, released a copy of an F.B.I. record that included the false allegation without naming Mr. Smirnov, or questioning its veracity.

Apparently Grassley, the NY Post and the person who posted (see link) the following on these pages last July were a bit too credulous.
The federal informant — a Ukrainian-American who has been a trusted, highly credible FBI source for over a decade and been paid “six figures,” according to Grassley...

Like our resident conservatives, FOX News has gone radio silent on the topic of Smirvov’s accusations. See link.

You're such a lying a$$hole. I had Fox on in the aftermath of Biden's weak, pathetic, bumbling remarks about the death of Alexei Navalny. While I was still there, they cut to coverage of the charges against Smirnov.

    C'mon man. Gimme a break!

I will say that this is why the prudence the GOPs have been exercising in investigating suspicious activity among members of the Biden Family is a good thing for America. Joe has been busted for lying about his knowledge of Hunter's and Jim's business dealings. The investigation is warranted... by the Constitution.

You only commented on this when I goaded you to comment.

Hannity and all the other FOX pundits had nothing to say on the the arrest of Smirnov last night when the news broke. Before that they, Hannity and particular, had plenty to say about Smirnov's unverified allegations. Like HtS and OD, FOX pundits thought the FD-1023 form was a "bombshell". Some here including myself, predicted it would be a dud.

HtS, I've already refuted your claim that Joe Biden "lied" about his son's and brother's business dealings. You confuse knowing generally what a person's business is with knowing the details of a person's business transactions.

Btw, didn't you tell us that you are boycotting FOX News and no longer watch it? How did you happen to know what they reported this morning?

HtS, I've already refuted your claim that Joe Biden "lied" about his son's and brother's business dealings.

    No. You have not.

I've said numerous times that I check out YouTube videos from Fox but, in this case, I caught wind of the fact that the Doddering Old Fool was going to comment on the death of Alexei Navalny and turned on the tube to see it.

    HtS,
I said I refuted your claims about Joe Biden knowing Hunter's business dealings. I didn't say you acknowledged it. Factcheckers agree with me.

But even if Joe Biden lied that he didn't know about his son's business dealings, that is not a crime in any legal sense. Nor is it an impeachable offense in any constitutional sense.

I guess my thought is, "does this completely vacate the entire prosecution against pedojoe?" I'm thinking not. In fact, I'm not convinced there was much resting on his lie. So counter to our lawyer and prosecutor curt, I'm not thinking it's the total wash of the entire prosecution in this case.

And much like something that Biff from Back to the Future would say. "But I just have TDS!"

I also find it very interesting that this one person is looking at 25 years for his lying, and people who were professionals working in DOJ got fucking ZERO for lying about another president and actually violating the law they swore to uphold and defend.

  9. by Curt_Anderson on February 16, 2024 12:21 pm
    OD,
I don't know who you are accusing of lying about another president or what lies were said, but Smirnov is looking at 25 years because he lied to the FBI under oath. That's perjury or its close cousin.

  10. by HatetheSwamp on February 16, 2024 12:33 pm

But even if Joe Biden lied that he didn't know about his son's business dealings, that is not a crime in any legal sense.

Exactly as pb's been saying. It is reason, however, for Congress to investigate why "that feckless dementia-ridden piece of crap" lied. There's still gobs of evidence that Hunter and Jim behaved criminally. And, why Joe lied about connection to them is a legitimate question.

    OD,
I get that you don't think that Smirnov being charged and discredited is a big deal. Previously when their hair was on fire, House Republicans said Smirnov's accusations were "credible", "crucial" and a "smoking gun". That was then.

(CNN)While a spokesman for House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan told CNN “nothing has changed” in the wake of the charges, Jordan said on Fox last month “the most corroborating evidence we have is that 1023 form from this highly credible confidential human source.”

House Oversight Chair James Comer said his work is “not reliant” on the now-debunked allegations and pointed to a “large record of evidence,” but when Republicans were fighting to publicize the document that memorialized these claims, Comer said on Fox in May 2023 “this is a very crucial piece of our investigation.”

And House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith, who is leading the inquiry with Jordan and Comer, said the allegations were a “smoking gun.”

As I recall, the GOPs cited the FBI as describing this source as highly reliable.

As, Curt, in these here United States, one is innocent until proven guilty...

    ...cept Donald J Trump.

    HtS,
I don’t believe the FBI had complemented or otherwise commented on the then unnamed federal informant It was Senator Chuck Grassley, who described Smirnov in glowing terms. I linked to your “bombshell” post of last December in my opening post, in which Grassley is quoted as calling him “highly credible” or some such.

curt- I get that you don't think that Smirnov being charged and discredited is a big deal.

Lead- As I recall, the GOPs cited the FBI as describing this source as highly reliable.

The truth of it is that he was a "Confidential Informant" for the FBI. By definition, they have to be trusted to give reliable information.

curt- I don't know who you are accusing of lying about another president or what lies were said, but Smirnov is looking at 25 years because he lied to the FBI under oath. That's perjury or its close cousin.

Do you have massive memory loss or are you just stupid? I have to repeat myself every time of the multitude I've brought this up. Do the words "Crossfire Hurricane" and "Steele Dossier" mean anything in your memory?

James Comey- Fired with full retirement and bennies after lying to FISA courts, and having knowledge of the entire scam and lies of the case.

Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz did find that the FBI made 17 errors or omissions in its FISA warrant applications to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA Court) for surveillance of former Trump aide Carter Page. Meaning the surveillance of Page was illegal. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, and Judge Rosemary M. Collyer issued the first warrant, The first two extensions were signed by Comey, and the last one by his deputy Andrew McCabe. Attorney's Acting Attorney General Dana Boente signed the first extension, and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein signed the last two. Each one of the "errors" is a felony, and making one error like this is subject to a charge of Malicious Prosecution or Abuse of Process charges. Each person who signed the warrant is accountable for the errors on their particular warrant.

On August 19, 2020, a former FBI attorney pleaded guilty to making a false statement stemming from his alteration of an email connected to one of the FISA warrant applications. He was "released from service" without prejudice.

    OD,
I asked who and what you were referring to, to give you a chance to show that others have lied under oath. Simply lying is not necessarily crime. Making a mistake is not necessarily a crime. Smirnov apparently made the mistake of lying under oath. Christopher Steele, for example, didn’t make the mistake of lying under oath

The Steele dossier, also known as the Trump–Russia dossier,[1] is a controversial political opposition research report compiled by Christopher Steele that was published without permission as an unfinished 35-page compilation of "unverified, and potentially unverifiable"[a] raw intelligence reports—"not established facts, but a starting point for further investigation".[3][4][5] It was written from June to December 2016 and contains allegations of misconduct, conspiracy, and cooperation between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and the government of Russia prior to and during the 2016 election campaign. —Wikipedia

Christopher Steele, for example, didn’t make the mistake of lying under oath, I agree, but he wasn't any part of the conversation, and only the dossier was mentioned. Please read next time.🤣

Everyone mentioned in DOJ is guilty because when they turned in the warrants, they are signing, under oath, everything in the warrant is true and correct. So everyone I mentioned lied under oath to the courts, DOJ, etcetcetc. None of them are serving any time whatsoever.
