Trump Renews Promise to Withdraw US Troops from Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN - President Donald Trump has renewed his resolve to “bring our soldiers back home” from Afghanistan, publicly questioning again the goal of the current U.S. military mission to the war-torn country.

Trump reiterated his intention amid reports that the ongoing U.S. troop drawdown in Afghanistan “is well ahead of schedule” outlined in a landmark peace-building pact the United States signed with the Taliban in late February to end the nearly 19-year-old Afghan war.

“We are acting as a police force, not the fighting force that we are, in Afghanistan,” Trump tweeted Wednesday. After 19 years, it was time for Afghan authorities to police their own country, he wrote.

Trump: US will be out of Afghanistan by Christmas
On Wednesday evening, just a few hours before the vice presidential debate, Trump wrote on Twitter that “we should have the small remaining number of our brave men and women serving in Afghanistan home by Christmas.”

We should have the small remaining number of our BRAVE Men and Women serving in Afghanistan home by Christmas!

Note to HtS: Trump, win or lose, knew he'd be president on Christmas Day.

    Curt,

You may remember that Trump was distracted from November on.

Since Vietnam, Trump has always been anti war. Getting us out of Afghanistan is classic Trump. We'll never know, but my guess is that Trump would have accomplished the withdrawal in an orderly manner. What he do know for certain is that Joe handled it in the way a demented old fart would.

The disaster in how the withdrawal has happened is all Joe's and the holocaust of every pro America Afghani is on Joe's hands. The horrid lives that will be lived by millions of women in Afghanistan, probably for at least a generation, is Joe's baby.

Yeah, I know Trump had a full plate. He was planning and sending out invitations for an insurrection, browbeating secretaries of state to change the election results, directing his minions in about 60 losing efforts to overturn the election.

With the Taliban completing their takeover of Afghanistan and refugees desperately fighting to leave the country, former President Donald Trump has gone after President Joe Biden, calling on him to "resign in disgrace" over the withdrawal.

But shortly after he did, an old clip made the rounds on social media, in which Trump bragged just one month ago that he was the real mastermind behind the exit from Afghanistan, saying that he "started the process" and Biden wanted to stop it but couldn't.

“I started the process, all the troops are coming home, they (Biden) couldn’t stop the process. 21 years is enough. They (Biden) couldn’t stop the process, they (Biden) wanted to but couldn’t stop the process.” - the former president

Commenters on social media promptly roasted Trump for his about-face, reminding him that just weeks ago he wanted credit for the very thing he is now demanding Biden "resign in disgrace" over.

I love it when there is evidence on Twitter, and videotapes, etc. to refute claims by Monday morning quarterbacks like Trump.

  5. by HatetheSwamp on August 16, 2021 3:27 pm

Trump was not the mastermind of the abandoning of the people we promised to protect when we left.

I disagree with Trump's policy but I don't see how you can blame him 7 months after he's gone for the historically disastrous execution of the plan...

    ...unless you are a Trumpaphobe.

I agree with both presidents' Afghanistan policy. And I'll bet that most Americans do too.

    Donna,

I'm one, if you follow the press today, of the very few who disagree with both Presidents. I suspect that many Americans agree with that decision. (I do recall a minor grumble of discomfort when Trump announced the policy.)

What I'm convinced that Americas with heart...where's yours?...will feverishly reject is the ridiculous way in which Joe's gang ignored the fate of our allies in Afghanistan. According to Afghan veterans I saw on Monday on both MSNBC and Fox, we effin PROMISED to take them with us if and when we left. And, thanks to Joe we lied!!!!

Best case, thousands of them are going to die hideous deaths...

    ...because of what Joe did.

That's not going to sit well in America.

I can't imagine how it sits well with you.

Funny, that's how I feel about anti-vaxxer misinformation spewers, spurious claims of anti-vaxxers rights be violated and anti-vax apologists and the desths they are causing.

    Me too, Curt.

Our military would still be in Vietnam if the US did what Hts is suggesting we do in Afghanistan.

  11. by HatetheSwamp on August 19, 2021 6:33 am

True, Donna, and we can discuss why, but pb doesn't think we should have stayed in Vietnam.

    Donna,

The advantage in maintaining a military presence in Germany for about 80 years has nothing to do with Germany. It's been all about having troops and (and, it's Friday) effin weaponry next door to the USSR/Russia. I'm not hearing po or isle demanding we bring those troops home.

It's the same with Japan for 80 years and Korea for 70 years, only replace Russia with China.

With Vietnam, to remain there was unnecessary. We already had a military presence in that part of the world.

As far as Afghanistan is concerned, for 20 effin years, we had a huuuge amount of weaponry and as many boots on the ground as we needed in the most volatile part of the world today where Al Qaeda, ISIS, the Taliban and an uncountable number of jihadist groups are fermented and plotting evil against the non Muslim world.

The abandonment of our military advantage in Afghanistan is asinine. I objected when Trump announced it. And, now that Biden has bungled the withdrawal, we are probably in more danger from jihadists than we were post 9 11.
